Metal Gear Solid 4 Database to be released tomorrow on PSN
For those of you who simply can't get enough of everything MGS, there's surprise for everyone tomorrow on PSN -- an official Metal Gear Solid 4 Database. The Database is a "free, downloadable interactive application that contains the official knowledge base of everything that is Metal Gear, reaching all the way back to the very beginning of the franchise." In other words, all the MGS lore you could ever want in one free official package.
In consideration of those of us who haven't finished MGS4 yet, there is a feature that eliminates any and all MGS4 information for a spoiler-free experience. They also added a camouflage and a new music for the in-game iPod under EXTRAS of the main menu for immediate download. It looks like Konami has a lot of MGS4 DLC up their sleeves, we can't wait!

LOL, me too. I'm on my third time through.
First time I went through with a combination of stealth and shooting, but mainly stealth. I had a fair amount of continues and alerts at the end of each chapter.
The second time through I just wanted to re-watch some of the early cut-scenes, so I ran through on easy mode as fast as I could, ignoring weapons and just knifing anyone in my way. I thought, "hey, I wonder how fast I could beat it by ignoring enemies and just running to the waypoints?" So, I beat it again that way. Not a fun way to play it really.
Then I heard you could beat the entire game without killing a single person. So, that's what I'm working on now... also trying for zero alerts at the same time.

oh great i mean cmon japan has had mgs1 for like 3 months and we get this!!cmon i mean this is cool but mgs1 is great!PS3FANBOY.COM make a petition please sony praises you guys!!!!!
Mattchewie @ Jun 18th 2008 7:58PM
I know having MGS1 from PSN would be pretty cool but you do know that for 30 bucks you can get all 3 previous titles in a pack (same with hitman and DMC). So I agree we should of got it too but at least we have a decent option for not just getting 1 but 3 MGS titles :D.
Organic_Shadow @ Jun 18th 2008 8:58PM
PS3's firmware was updated today specifically for PS1 titles.
Gee, I wonder what that means... possibly so that the US version of MGS1 will work properly or something? Seems likely to me. Sony has been doing a pretty decent job of giving us what we have been complaining to them for lately, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if MGS1 was in tomorrow or next week's update.
Barndo111 @ Jun 18th 2008 9:32PM
I wish they would add MGS1 to the PSN as well. I've been wanting to be able to play it on my PSP actually. C'mon Konami, having that on PSN is a license to print money!

Nothing you said had anything at all to do with what I said. Were you talking to someone else?
What I was saying is that it's possible that we may get MGS1 soon, seeing as MGS4 just came out, and we got a firmware update that was specifically geared toward PS1 title compatibility.
I'm not excited about Home at all really. Not unless they release an open beta and do it Gmail style before the end of the year.
Mattchewie @ Jun 18th 2008 7:55PM
Thats wicked cool. Some of my friends have only played MGS1 so they are way behind when it comes to story and how person a links to b and them most likely to c.
I have the older games and they plan on playing them once they run through 4 but this will get them up on the story and understand whats going so they can really get the full enjoyment out of 4.

Now that is motivtion to get my PS3's internet connection working again. I haven't had any urges to play MGO since MGS4 is so good and I already experienced the beta, but this I will download tomorrow in case Konami slaps a price on it later.
Jedediahjl @ Jun 19th 2008 12:15PM
I just heared that in game XMB and trophies have been confirmed for update 2.4

Ooh so that's what Ryan Payton was working on. A week late but still welcomed.
Carletto87 @ Jun 19th 2008 3:41AM
I've downloaded it from the japanese psn...... it works but it does not unlock MGS4 elements because tell me that I haven't finished it.......... ba............ I have finished it 3 times
nxtiak @ Jun 19th 2008 3:46AM
Japanese saves are different from US saves. That's probably why. Just wait a few more hours and get the US version of the Database
highman888 @ Jun 19th 2008 4:36AM
Working on beating extreme with no kills / alerts / special items under 5 hours for the big boss face camo, it's ROUGH! Online play is hella addicting too! Leveling up your skills and the character customization is awesome! MGS4 takes the cake as the greatest game of all time in my opinion. The soundtrack, gameplay, online, replay value, graphics, storyline, voice acting, it's all top notch. Go HIDEO!

Question: I'm a big fan of MGS but (and I know this is hence a contradiction) I never got "around" to picking up MGS3.
Should I pick it up and play it first before MGS4?
I know it's not "vital" to enojy the latest MGS but I was just wondering what the general consensus is amongst fellow MGS fans ?
Thanks!
IrishGandalf @ Jun 19th 2008 10:30AM
hey, man I'm a bit of a mgs fan and I have played mgs3. In terms of story it's kinna 50/50, you don't "need" to know this stuff in order to play mgs4 (it's more of an "oh btw") but in terms of gameplay and cinematics as well as the story i'd highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the entire mgs experience! Mgs3 actually slipped under my radar too, I saw it in a bargen bucket and was like "I didn't know they released that!" ps if you thought mgs2 looked good on the ps2 wait till u see mgs3!!!!
Brodie-san @ Jun 19th 2008 12:02PM
Cheers. I'll pick it up for the sake of completing the series. I just hope I can play it before I succumb to the charms of Part 4
:)
kentuckyfried @ Jun 19th 2008 4:02PM
MGS3 will be completely spoiled after playing MGS4. Then agian, MGS3's story wasn't that deep so you can see the ending a mile away.
I have some complaints about how MGS4 handled MGS3 but I'm not going to say anything here.
IrishGandalf @ Jun 24th 2008 9:21AM
@ kentuckyfried, he stated twice that he intends to play MGS3 b4 MGS4, it'll be the correct way to do it. And as i said b4 the story may not be abolutely vital or significant to the rest of the series but i'd still recommend that any MGS fan play it b4 MGS4, as everytime made just a little more sense to me after playing MGS3 as i was v confused after MGS2 (story wise, it terms of gameplay and cinematics i was blown away on both titles).
Griever92 @ Jun 19th 2008 5:31AM
I downloaded this off the Japanese PSN just now, it has an english translation built into it, but as Carletto87 mentioned, it doesn't recognize your MGS4 clear data, my guess is that it's looking for the JP MGS4 data, rather than the NA version. But this is defitely an awesome piece of software even without the MGS4 elements. I'll just have to wait until the NA store is updated to get that.
Can't believe this was free haha.
TriFF51 @ Jun 19th 2008 5:52AM
I thought the surprise was for ppl who bought MGS4, everyone can get this tho right?....its still awesome, but.....
