Sonic races through new Unleashed trailer
This new Sonic Unleashed gameplay trailer looks... awesome. It has all the makings of a 90s great Sonic game -- speed, color and more speed. The stage design is classic Sonic and the visuals look gorgeous. Can this be the Sonic game to revitalize the aging franchise? After the glitches and control problems with Sega's last attempt on the PS3, did we run out of optimism for the beloved blue video game icon? We're keeping our fingers crossed.

Ooh, it borderlines on photo realistic. That is so cool.
maroofh @ Jun 18th 2008 6:39PM
I don't see how you can lose in this game. He pretty much runs through everything. Looks pretty sweet though. I just hope there's loads of levels of this quality.
kastonie @ Jun 18th 2008 6:40PM
if this game plays like sonic on ds, then it will be awesome
Deadpool @ Jun 18th 2008 6:41PM
Now that's a Sonic game! This one has speed too and nothing to slow you down.
Alan Tsang? That's a new name...did one of the bloggers change their name? If not, I welcome the new blogger. Yo!

Please Sonic... Please... :~
Nick @ Jun 18th 2008 6:43PM
The game looks fine and all, but whatever happened to controlling Sonic? The trailer makes it look like you can run into everything without having to do anything or worry about dying.
Ty @ Jun 19th 2008 1:35AM
Not only that but it looks like the actual controlling thats done is done by an onscreen prompt telling you which way to turn. Then when you when have to turn, instead of you moving with Sonic, his position changes and you stay with the same camera reference... kinda like those really old top down scrolling formula 1 racers... I want a faster, Sonic Adventure with more pure speed parts like the extremely fast running sequences in Sonic PS3 and ofcourse alot LESS slow parts (almost none... I could live with no slow parts). And a Sonic bound camera... that turns when you turn Sonic. Instead of some sort of script turning camera based on the map or a rail camera (that this new Sonic game has).

wow talk about speed I did see a couple x commands and if this is true speed of the game at 60 fps then my old eyes will need a tune up just to play the game....... lol I also think as some other poster stated where is the control. he seems to run through everything and with very few player input, unless it was so fast i wasnt able to see the on screen commands. the game looks great and even looks like fun lets hope it keeps up with exspectations and delivers what its claiming. I will be catouis until seen for myself though.

it looks like you actually do a whole lot of nothing. And you can't even just explore the design (which is impressive). It's just goes by in a second.
Also, i'm not a fan of the "Real" environments. why do they stray from making something just out-there and new? be inventive! i don't want to see him running through real cities.
Tristan @ Jun 18th 2008 7:24PM
The only problem I see with this is that this is how every first sonic level is in every game, full of fast paced speed and such. I hope the entire game is as fluid as this at it is so impressive to just watch this (music though :( )
Holiday 2008!?
Popfrogs @ Jun 18th 2008 7:26PM
From the trailer, they should call this one "Sonic goes to Spain". I've never seen so many tiled rooftops in my life.
And by the way, it does look pretty awesome. Sonic didn't die because someone good was playing but I saw plenty of places to get hurt/lose rings/die.
threepm @ Jun 18th 2008 7:38PM
Must go faster....
Dwag @ Jun 18th 2008 7:55PM
I'll get this for the Wii like I do every other sonic game.
#21 @ Jun 19th 2008 1:12AM
that looks 10231230 times better than any of the other sonics on the next gen consoles...
Terra @ Jun 18th 2008 8:20PM
Please take Sonic out of the real world! Sonic doesn't belong in the real world. What happened to the zone levels/stages?
I miss the zones. Sonic doesn't need to be in Europe or any other part of the world. Zones! Zones! Zones! Bring back the Zones!
Andy @ Jun 19th 2008 2:08AM
im worried, this is gonna feel like a car racing game instead of sonic
OddyOh @ Jun 18th 2008 10:13PM
If it's all just quicktime events, meh. And that music gets on my nerves just for that short duration, but I assume they'll have other tracks (or custom soundtracks?!).
Other than that, looks f'n sweet!
arrogowski @ Jun 18th 2008 9:55PM
How about restarting the entire game with pure side scrolling and some Odin sphere graphics? > _ >
And yes, I hate the real world environments! Bring back big robo cities, the forests, the jungles, the ruins, the volcanoes, the deserts, so on and so forth!
This is why the only Sonic games I still play are 1, 2, 3 and S&K and the gameboy advance ones from time to time
John McPoop (PSN:johnnynumber5) @ Jun 18th 2008 10:47PM
Looks like a few elements right out of Ratchet And Clank. Namely the rail grinding and the skydiving section. Looks pretty good especially after the last Sonic debacle.
mixel @ Jun 19th 2008 12:51AM
.. The rail grinding which was like exactly like this in Sonic Adventure 2 on the Dreamcast a year before Ratchet & Clank even existed? :)
John @ Jun 19th 2008 1:19AM
You know where they messed up? The music. If they don't get better music, something akin to the original sonic, this game, as brilliant as it finally looks, means nothing. They need to evoke the melodies and progression of the original music. This music is crap, and if they keep it, the game will be crap. Great music could make this an 8.0 rather than a 6.5. I predict ps3fanboy will not post this comment. as it went over 4 lines.
Deadpool @ Jun 19th 2008 2:00AM
I agree. I want Crush 40 back! Sonic and Crush 40 go together like bread and butter.
John @ Jun 19th 2008 1:18AM
told you. Pravda
Poozle @ Jun 19th 2008 3:52AM
I'm slightly worried because there was about 2s in the trailer where it showed sonic bouncing on enemies... using what looked like the horrible method from the PS2 sonic came (double x I think to home in). I have my suspicions that all we're being shown is the speed parts and there is a lot we're not seeing yet.
Fraser JK @ Jun 19th 2008 4:06AM
Looks like he's running or rails, continuously and players can only move him left or right and attack or something! Still looks great tho!
ChaOS @ Jun 19th 2008 9:22AM
Damn, when I saw the first shots this game looked like it was going to be in 2.5D and that really excited me. I don't understand why the sonic team insists on using 3d... They've made some kickass 2D games, and could certainly make a 2D/2.5D game that looks great by today's standards. I'll probably rent this one at first, been burned by Sonic before.
James @ Jun 19th 2008 3:26PM
Looks a bit like Secret of the 7 rings.
I hope this isn't an actual level, because there are practically no obstacles to stop you.
See this is the problem with Sonic though in 3D. It's so attached to speed unnecessarily that they think they have to speed through levels to make people happy.
I'd much rather prefer a great looking full 2D sidescroller than an on rails speed fest. Sure we can make great looking realistic 3D environments, but there are still plenty of game genres that benefit from 2D.
3D fighters are normally pretty mediocre, or at least I can never get into them like I can say Super Smash Brothers or Street Fighter.
