Versus XIII suspended, Final Fantasy XIII is priority
In the latest issue of Famitsu, an interview with Tetsuya Nomura revealed that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is currently being put on hold. Nomura, the game's director, said that the majority of the team working on Versus XIII is now helping out on Final Fantasy XIII. The main title in the Fabula Nova Crystallis compilation is top priority at the moment.
While both games will appear at the upcoming August Square Enix party (in non-playable form), Nomura hints at a bigger reveal and more info to come at Tokyo Game Show in October. Knowing Square Enix, this means a minute of ambiguous footage in a closed theater. Let's hope we're wrong about that last speculative statement and see if a playable demo comes in October.

I never have quite understood how these games are split up, but it may not be such a bad thing to stagger the releases by several months anyway. If the games are released at the same time, it could be rather confusing to people about which one they should buy first, are they sequels, can each game stand alone, etc.
mathab @ Jun 18th 2008 12:39PM
Each game is loosely related. They stand alone.
jahd5000 @ Jun 18th 2008 12:46PM
ok, every new that is posted here about rpg is worst than the later... we're not getting last remnant on time, nor star ocean 4, and the gane that i was most wanting to play, Versus, is now like 3 years ahead, if they dont end up cancelling it... so we wont either have Eight Days, nor The Getaway, "Cause we got plenty of exclusives"??? NO WE DONT, NOT EVERYBODY LOVES FPS... DAM IT!
And with that dress thign, and our new SONY president aiming to get people money from internet games, which usually suck and drain all your money, and i dont even have a Credit Card, and cant use them anyway in my region, so no PSN Store for me... and then SONY says they care about their customers? the only reasons i had to convince my friends to get a PS3 were all these things i already comented, but now i dont even want mine, i would've maybe prefere a X360 for the moments, and then buy a PS3 in about 2 years or more. i wish i had the money to but a X360 now... i thought ps3 was worth losing the possibility to play Fable 2, but now i see is not. Yes, sure, bright future for ps3, well it might not be for me too.
Popfrogs @ Jun 18th 2008 2:08PM
Instead of posting a long, rambling comment, just sell your PS3 and get an Xbox. The only drawback is that you can actually sell a PS3, nobody wants to buy a used Xbox.
/flame away
jahd5000 @ Jun 18th 2008 4:05PM
hey sorry, i dont see how my post could offend any1, is just the way i feel right now, and i wouldnt ever want to sell my ps3, im loyal to PS, but kind of left down, and thats something i can say many ppl agree with.
And yes, i would like to have a x360 for a few games, which are gettin more and more every day. but never said i regret buying my ps3.
Geoff Gibson @ Jun 18th 2008 12:57PM
Well this sucks... How many times has a game been completed after it was "put on hold"? It seems like with each passing day the Playstation brand is becoming less and less the "RPG machine that I had hoped it would be when I bought the system.
Maybe I should have bought a 360 instead... They seem to be getting a decent amount of RPGs.
Oh well... at least FInal Fantasy XIII is still coming out exclusive to the PS3, right? Hello? Anybody there... ?
r.crisp @ Jun 18th 2008 1:03PM
Funny enough, your other comments show that you already have a 360. Not to mention your profile pic is a 360 pad. That seems very unbiased...
Rowdehaj @ Jun 18th 2008 1:19PM
Yes indeed. And no, FFXIII will not be coming to your Failbox, Xbot. Go away.
I don't mind Versus being delayed in favour of FFXIII, It seems to me that FFXIII is going to be the single most important title in the not too distant future, as it will determine whether JRPGs will actually gush onto PS3 at long last, or if Japan really is going to get screwed over.
Or perhaps forced to buy Xboxes.
...
I don't think that will happen.
True_Darknight @ Jun 18th 2008 12:54PM
Ok so business as usual!!!! FF games get forever delayed.. heck everyone would be uber shocked if they come out on time.
But then again once you play them you realize why.. the times it takes to go thru 50+ hours and what not without side quests.
I can wait for these as they are totally 2009!!!.. can you say GoW3 & FFXIII?? oh yes!!!
anyways just give me Socom beta and WipeoutHD for now.. I'll keep quiet!
oh oh and the Force Unleashed comes out soon :)
KarlW @ Jun 18th 2008 4:33PM
There's usually about 3 games per console:
PSOne - 7, 8, 9
PS2 - 10, 11*, 12
*11 was a MMORPG, and it was out on the 360 as well, I think. Didn't really take off like the others did.
That said, thanks to HD graphics and more powerful hardware heightening peoples' expectations, games take more time and money to develop. So you may get less than 3 games this generation.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Jun 18th 2008 4:33PM
yea seriously, i dont think ive ever played a Final Fantasy game (since they went 3D) that took me less than around 100 hours to complete. i like to do EVERYTHING and i for some reason, love grinding levels as well. that is the main reason i love FF games, there is so much to do in them and the stories are usually top notch. same with Kingdom Hearts too.
Jerses @ Jun 18th 2008 1:06PM
Finally!!! they need not to delay the only game that matters. the other games are all ok...but not as good as an original final fantasy. They should have made this decision from the start.
Fiddlesworth @ Jun 18th 2008 1:15PM
Versus XIII was already due to come out later than Final Fantasy XIII. This move allows Final Fantasy XIII to be completed sooner, to be a larger, higher quality game or all three and then we get Versus XIII later. How close together did you want XIII and Versus XIII for christs sake?
Geoff Gibson is clearly a troll.
Sorrow880 @ Jun 18th 2008 1:32PM
I'm dying for some JRPG's. It appears none will be coming soon though. At least they're trying to get FFXIII done. I guess it's safe to say that JRPG's are dead this generation. Oh well, I guess my gaming days are coming to an end.
Neo Senku @ Jun 18th 2008 1:53PM
Hope fully within the next year we'll start seeing more of them, if not, we'll pretty much be in the same boat as there wont be that much left for me to play as far as gaming goes i like other genres but rpgs are the absolute favorite for me, there what i play the most of.
Phileoca @ Jun 18th 2008 1:33PM
I'll probably be married by the time these games come out and then I'll never get to play them!
Girls FTW!
ComicShaman @ Jun 18th 2008 2:32PM
Solution: marry a woman that likes Final Fantasy. I did. Works wonderfully.
t_jh @ Jun 19th 2008 2:49AM
Genius! ComicShaman :P
deusmecha @ Jun 18th 2008 1:50PM
Fantastic. The FF delays begin.
lantus @ Jun 18th 2008 2:04PM
Nothing new, development as usual with Final Fantasy games, especially the high-profile ones. I know they will both be worth the wait.
BlackFreefall @ Jun 18th 2008 2:04PM
Somewhere underneath the Square Enix headquarter, a bunch of game developmers are working on Final Fantasy XIV.
browntown @ Jun 18th 2008 2:07PM
Good, get ff 13 out in 09 in NA and ill be happy, i can wait another 2 years for ff13 versus. I towuld be even better if versus came out in 2010.
Popfrogs @ Jun 18th 2008 2:12PM
Well, the way I see this is that if MGS4, the gaming perfection that it is, took 4 years to create, I'd be surprised if FFXIII took a day less than 4 years to be equally epic/masterful.
Then again we've been seeing CGI screenshots from it for how long, 3 years already?
Vcize @ Jun 18th 2008 3:10PM
The FF series is like Blizzard's RTS games to me. They're going to get delayed many times, but they're always worth it.
Vincent @ Jun 18th 2008 5:19PM
FUCK YES!!! I CAME! Twice even.
Those are great news. Rather than progress slow as shit on two games they will try to get something DONE. Players should rejoice over this \o/
FFXIII is the reason that made me buy a PS3. I'm hoping for a release by summer 2009!

Its about time they went crunch time on FFXIII and release the greatest game ever to hit the PS3.
boltu222 @ Jun 18th 2008 8:52PM
Thats great news now they can get FFXII out sooner and then give us FFVXII soon after ^__^
I don't see how ppl are taking this as a delay >_> they've just put the game on hold to work on another rather then gettin 2 FF games in 2010 we'll prolly be gettin 1 in 2009 and one in 2010.
Theres also 3 other FFXII games to be announced... I'm guessing thats what the big TGS things gonna be.
Jason @ Jun 19th 2008 9:59AM
This rumor is FALSE.
