PS3 most appealing to those over 44 years old
A new study out today by Experian Consumer Research concluded there are differences between consumers who purchased the PS3 and those who purchased the Xbox 360. The biggest difference being that while the Xbox 360 appeals the most to gamers who are 35-44, the PS3 appeals to the more senior demographic of 45 and up. The study also finds that youngsters ages 18-24 prefer the Nintendo Wii. Finally, the study uses "new media respondents" as a control group, defined as those who spend more than one hour online per week.
This study doesn't tell us anything we don't already know; they don't state any specific numbers in their press release and the presentation you can download basically concludes that there are no differences between PS3 owners and 360 owners except for age. After seeing a sample of their rudimentary research, if we were a company looking for statistics to help us market to gamers, we'd stay away from them.

Same here* I'm 20 years old and I love my PS3... what a stupid poll and pointless and show how many free timw those people hold... >__>
They are calling us old... geez, Christ!
Da @ Jun 20th 2008 1:08AM
Honestly, wtf, who between 18 and 24 prefers the wii?
I can't understand that, I know many people and although some see the wii as a lot of fun, no one seriously supports it, or would chose it over a PS3 (or xbox2 I guess).
And of course PS3 is popular with over 45 peoples, the xbox honestly has zero to offer that demographic.
Ayman @ Jun 20th 2008 4:49AM
Maybe they mean in gamer years
check this video for between the 18-24 years playing the Wii

Cool, it's nice to know that my PS3 will finally appeal to me 18 years from now. Until then, I supposed I'll shelve it.
Only problem is what system to play until 2026...
anthonyjh @ Jun 19th 2008 10:56PM
Hahaha, WOW! That's some great news! Lol...
But really though, my 46 year old papy plays CoD4 online regularly.
parkd @ Jun 19th 2008 11:23PM
"...defined as those who spend more than one hour online per week..."
Wow, they were doing surveys on people who were on less?
Daniel @ Jun 20th 2008 1:48AM
Well my dad who is well over 44 DID have a major crush on Nariko but other than that I just don't agree with this at all. Seems pretty far off.
Dilly @ Jun 20th 2008 12:31AM
50+ men just want bluray and if they're going to buy one, they get ps3 so their grandkids can play it when they come over, so they get a 40gb ps3, happy feet on bluray, and transformers the game. i work at bestbuy and i see that very often.
papaw @ Jun 20th 2008 12:52AM
I enjoy my PS3 and I'll be 50 this year. I don't have much time, I just stopped watching TV as much. I have friends older than me that have them. It's not because of Blueray either, we play. I even bought one, PS3 80gig, for my grandson who's 8. If you see papaw or old crow online it's me. Have fun my friends.
Popfrogs @ Jun 20th 2008 1:47AM
Experian is wrong yet again I think. Maybe the ages are off by about 10 to 20 years, which makes more sense.
Adjusted:
"The biggest difference being that while the Xbox 360 appeals the most to gamers who are 12-20, the PS3 appeals to the more senior demographic of 25 and up. The study also finds that youngsters ages 8-14 prefer the Nintendo Wii."

25 years old. PS3 owner since Dec 06.
JaffaBoy @ Jun 20th 2008 4:00AM
Well I'm 46 and the PS3 was the only choice for me.
Great for gaming and I sold it to the wife that its not just a games machine its an entertainment system too.
Gamed all my life as I'm sure you younger people will too... never too old to game!
Now have a Wii too, but that was my daughter (11) and wife's choice (but I think its a fun system too).
Mind you,,,damn Singstar ;-) .... now Its a challenge getting the wife off the PS3
jclass @ Jun 20th 2008 4:32AM
lol r u serious...im 26 and I enjoy the 360 way more than the ps3, most ppl my age do as well thats the 360 demographic 20-30's, no way is it really selling as much to the 40 age group who wrote this gibberish really needs to either check their sources, whose study was that the online university of phoenix...lol

Popfrogs @ Jun 20th 2008 10:28AM
You're 26 and you type like you're texting on a phone? What a sad generation.

47 this year, PS1 since 1994(still working)3 PS2's(Jap/US/UK)and of course 250GB PS3 since march 07 - For me its the one and only choice for full entertainment,1080p, bluray, full backward compatibility(with all my PS1 and PS2 games anyway), DivX playback, audio books, music, photo slideshow with music, cam to cam voice chat/YellowDog Linux OS, - I Love it!
STEVE @ Jun 20th 2008 8:01AM
45 Years old and I love my 250g PS3
Rygar @ Jun 20th 2008 8:49AM
I'm 30 and I own a 360 and a PS3, with the 360 getting most of the game time, as I generally only get exclusives for the black beast.
Eric E @ Jun 20th 2008 9:45AM
Im 24 ps3, Wii, PSP, DS owner.
I think the 360 is more jock/frat sterotype (From all my friends at least) and ps3 is more with the nerd/intelligent style. 360 is for Madden and Halo. PS3 is for FFXIII and MGS4. Also the fact nerds can play w/ the ps3 (swap HDD, install Linux, Remote Play, Fold proteins)
I think they say that about wii Demographic cause 18-24 all grew up playing Nintendo. Im on the older side and switched to PS in HS ( i remember trading in my N64 for it cause Goldeneye was the only good thing, and MGS looked awesome). xbox had nothing for me.
Jon Acheson @ Jun 20th 2008 9:52AM
I don't know that age has much to do with it.
I'm 40, and planned to be a 360 owner this generation until I found out what a POS it is. So I bought a PS3 instead.
The Wii does nothing for me. But then I don't care for Mario and company.
basil ghazi @ Jun 20th 2008 12:20PM
wow !!! good to see how many mature people playing!!!
Kruegmeister @ Jun 20th 2008 11:56AM
I guess this really proves that we get wiser with age.
It also proves that 90% of Statistics are Stupid.
Watcher @ Jun 20th 2008 1:10PM
When research goes bad...
Sorry, I'm no where near 44 and I love my PS3 quite a bit as do all of my friends, brother, heck everyone I know who has a PS3 isn't 44 yet. These researchers need to get better survey samples. Hint to them: Don’t limit your sampling to people you know. There’s a bigger world out there.
arrogowski @ Jun 20th 2008 2:00PM
Hm let's see I was a little kid and had Super Nintendo
Got an N64 several years later
Gamecube came around few years after I hit puberty and felt Nintendo slammed me in the head with an iron baseball bat so I got a PS2
20 years old right now and only current gen system I own is PS3. Haven't heard anyone on Mics that sounds over the age of 30, the 12 people on my Friends list are all under 27
Only people I've seen going ape shit over the Wii are under age 15
From personal experience their conclusions are absolute rubbish :-/
Thomas @ Jun 20th 2008 3:02PM
when i was about 8. around the time when the playstation 1 was starting to blossom. i realy wanted a Nintendo 64. For either my birthday or christmas. cant remember which. Cause of the marketing. But my dad wouldnt hear of it. and refused to buy me the nintendo. Saying that the Playstation was better. anyway. I ended up with the playstation. which i was very happy with and thanked him for not letting me buy the inferior nintendo.
Cisco @ Jun 20th 2008 3:17PM
Definitely a 28 year old here with all 3 systems.....
arrogowski @ Jun 20th 2008 4:51PM

From personal experience their conclusions are grade A bullcrap
And n64 wasn't inferior it was just handicapped software because of the limited storage space on cartridges and the expense. Turned off developers like developing for PS3 is turning them off now
Ether02 @ Jun 20th 2008 6:13PM
Well the older crowed probably are smart enough to realize the value of all the stuff the ps3 comes with out the box and know that its cheaper when you factor in all the stuff you have to buy separate for the xbox 360. They probably care about reliable hardware too. I'm 25 and a tech junkie and the ps2 was my all time favorite system so the ps3 was the obvious choice for me.
Brian @ Jun 20th 2008 9:57PM
I'm 31, own ps3 and 360. Ps3 for movies, I never play games on it. I also have a Sphynx as in the picture above. Cool!
