Third time's the charm? PS3 outsells Wii for the third time
The PlayStation 3 has outsold the Nintendo Wii worldwide for the third time ever for the week of June 7th to June 14th, according to VGChartz. This is the seventh time the PS3 was able to outsell the Wii in the US while in Japan this was the third time. This victory is likely due to the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, an incredible deal on the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle, and the Walmart deal that included a $100 gift card with the purchase of any PS3. Those of you who were very lucky were able to combine the aforementioned deals. Naysayers like to attribute the Wii shortage in the US for the PS3's triumph, but this time around the numbers are worldwide.
Is the third time the charm? Will this usher in an era of PS3 dominance? What do you guys think?
[Thanks, Trevor!]

This is really reaching. The PS3 is a good system with its own merits. This sort of week by week, day by day dick measuring really does it a diservice, imo.
jtedesco33 @ Jun 20th 2008 8:32AM
I was thinking the same thing. If it outsells the Wii at the end of the monthly numbers there's something to write about.
Tim Parsons @ Jun 19th 2008 9:40PM
PS3 will come out on top when all's said and done
mshimer5 @ Jun 19th 2008 9:43PM
Ughhh... I hope nobody actually takes this seriously. I love my PS3 and all, but I don't need it to be "number 1". 1 week's victory over the Wii after having arguably the biggest release on PS3 and really nothing for the Wii is not that big of news. Also, it is not like it out sold the Wii the way the Wii usually out sells it.
Moving on...

What in the heck are you saying of great "lover of the Ps3"... slash Liar i know a 360 fanboy when i hear them so take your tired azz to another website please
Organic_Shadow @ Jun 20th 2008 9:31AM
I agree. I love my PS3, I love my PSP, and my DS, and my Wii is.... in the doghouse for lack of games, and I will probably never buy a 360, but I don't need PS3 to be king.
I just need it to NOT be what Gamecube was last gen....
:(

I noticed the tables are really turning in PS3's favor.
Now with a lineup with the like of SOCOM, Resistance 2, LBP, Killzone 2, Infamous, and GOW III, the PS3 is going for the jugular.
SKI @ Jun 20th 2008 12:29PM
It just depends on how long it is until they come out.
Alex @ Jun 19th 2008 9:50PM
i guess this can be considered good news.
but i think we should all move on from hoping sony will come up on top in this "generation" of consoles.
maybe next generation.
somehow, that damn wii has caught the imagination of the masses and it won't let go. it's still a pain in the ass to find one.
Nick @ Jun 19th 2008 9:52PM
I want PS3 to do better than the 360, at least, and it will in the long run. The type of games that are made for the HD consoles would focus more on PS3 than 360. I don't really care if PS3 outsells Wii, but if it eventually does, then good for Sony. In the long run, I only care what ends up best for gaming.

Sony really have managed to put together a bunch of really great titles that are due to be released steadily over the coming months, running all the way through the holiday season, and into the new year. Combined with some very wanted features confirmed (in-game XMB), right now is a great time to jump onto the PS3 bandwagon. It almost feels like the console re-launched right when MGS4 got released.
Everyone knows that they were very much struggling through the first year and a half, but it really seems like they have a plan of attack for the second half of this year.
Personally, the games I can't wait for are WipEout HD and LittleBigPlanet. But will also probably be picking up SOCOM, Killzone 2 and Resistance 2. Not even sure what 3rd party games will strike my interest, but I'm sure there will be plenty.

It of course comes down to the games, and finally there is beginning to be a decent line-up for the PS3 (exclusives are the biggest system pushers, naturally.) The Wii doesn't have a lot of great games, so it makes perfect sense that the PS3 is outselling it right now, considering MGS4. I just hope that developers really start to focus on the PS3 and put out some top tier games, because, since December, there's not been much worth buying for it. Developers, wake up and stop the half-baked Xbox ports to PS3, stop the endless onslaught of FPS's, and put something out that is going to make the PS3 worth owning. Learn something from the success of MGS4.
Kenology @ Jun 19th 2008 10:47PM
There are plenty of great games on the Wii. It's just that the great game to shovelware ratio is skewed heavily in the favor of teh shovelwarez.
Ishimaru @ Jun 19th 2008 10:32PM
There's a reason why Andrew Yoon didn't write this...it's because he's an X3F douche bag!

Being a proud owner of all three systems I can say with confidence that this data means absolutely nothing. The battle of the console wars will not be won on a week to week basis but by longevity of the system.
Being that developers are just now cracking the surface of what they can do with the PS3, it is obvious that the PS3 will only gain steam within its projected 10 year run.
The Wii, relies on gimmicks and the its absence of availability. Microsoft is already trying to jump the gun and work on the Xbox 720. Meanwhile PS2's are still selling in abundance.
It is nice to see Sony win these meaningless battles. But five years from now I can say with utter confidence that the 360 and Wii will only be glimmers of the past while our PS3's are still selling strongly into the future.

exactly what I was gunna say, but better sounding
The1stMJC @ Jun 20th 2008 12:27AM
Ok first of all a week scan is stupid and Come on it is gonna change weekly. But I do hope this means the PS3 is gonna get bigger and more people join I want to have a large number of users. I only bought a ps3 and i hope it won't wrong me in the long run because I hate XBOX and Wii has the weakest library.
RebornJeremiah @ Jun 20th 2008 1:11AM
Did you get this news from SDF??
Jhon @ Jun 20th 2008 1:39AM
dont get me wrong - i love my ps3 -
but the #s - seriously - all that means is that - WII sold sooo many that its getting saturated and hence why they aren't selling as many - while the PS3 hasnt sold too well - so the sales are going almost flat (in the bigger view).
anyways - im still happy if ps3 continues to sell well - cuz then more people to play against online - and more love for SONY - for their beautiful products :) !!
cheers
ps: i love that there are multiple consoles - cuz we end up seeing better games.. though I hate fact that EA - of all the people bitches about programming for PS3 - hire some people and stop thinking about short term money A$$-HOLESS ! ! and make better games.. cuz i would spend the damn 50-60 quid on your games !!
ChodalBerryWagon @ Jun 20th 2008 2:57AM
I've never understood why the Wii's weekly sales are so... jagged.
is it that a new batch of Wii's are sent out on those weeks or something?
Baki @ Jun 20th 2008 5:37AM
Ok, I visit this site regularly but this has to be said.
STOP USING VGCHARTZ AS A SOURCE. Seriously.
For USA and Japan they use NPD numbers but the rest of the numbers they "predict" with no solid information. In Dec. of last year one of their numbers was off by A MILLION UNITS!
So please stop using them, it really hurts this sites credibility, in my opinion.
Natan82 @ Jun 20th 2008 6:55AM
PS3 will dominate constantly worldwide next year, after that the new model Slim and Final Fantasy XIII are released.
Digital1 @ Jun 20th 2008 10:14AM
When's the new slim model coming out?
Christian @ Jun 20th 2008 10:24AM
While I think this might mean the beginning of a period where the PS3 really takes of in sales compared to the Xbox360 (already lead in worldwide sales since December last year) but I doubt we yet have seen the beginning of period of outselling the Wii on a regular basis just yet. That said I do believe that it could be the beginning of starting to take market share from the Wii, as market share gains so far has mostly come at the expense of the xbox360. For the doubters out there let me point out the basic mathematical fact that you do NOT need to outsell someone in order to reduce their market share, you just have to have a better current sales ratio than your accumulated market share ratio.
PlasmaSnake @ Jun 20th 2008 11:06AM
I think a lot of people were holding out to get a next-gen console for a deal like the MGS4 bundle. I know I was. PLus, Xbox360 is for frat boys.
Paul @ Jun 20th 2008 11:33AM
Why does this chart have 3 colors in the legend above it? Why are their 2 PS3's up there? Where is the Red PS3 line? Why is the PS3 line on the graph in green when green is a color commonly used for the 360? Where is the 360 in this chart? I smell Bullsh!t here.
And to be clear I am a PS3 owner and supporter. Also, I'll echo the above sentiments that these weekly comparisons don't mean a thing and only further the attitude that this is a "war" between consoles.
WhyILeftVegas @ Jun 20th 2008 12:02PM
I'm actually really hoping the PS3 stays low-key. Enough for Sony to make a profit but not enough that it becomes a household product. I would hate for PSN to lower itself to the "standards" xbox live has so diligently set i.e. shrill voices screaming racial slurs and something about your mom and a donkey every time one gets online. F that. Yes, yes, blah blah blah I own both but to be honest my 3rd xbox has red ringed on me and is sitting in the trunk of my car right now as I don't even have the motivation to drop it off at a Fed Ex joint. Though I will for Fable 2 :P Ok, I'm done.
P.S. MGS is the balls! I'm on my second play through!!! :D
ashkungfu @ Jun 20th 2008 1:38PM
Forget the Wii ... look at how it crushed the 360. there are a lot of Wii's out there collecting dust, including my Wii (damn shame)..
Eddie @ Jun 20th 2008 2:16PM
I have both PS3 and Wii. I don't need a chart to tell me that PS3 sells more for me to realize that my PS3 is way better than my Wii.
Wii could outsell PS3 100:1 every week and I wouldn't care, as long as good games like MGS4 come out a few times a year.
CATCHORA @ Jun 22nd 2008 2:18AM
lol, I liked your comment there "PS3 pwns WII"
way to go ps3 :)
Blair Thiessen @ Jun 22nd 2008 4:39PM
Wii shortages are artificial to help hype the system, with the amount of money Nintendo is making right now they could make more if they wanted to but they don't because there profit would not be as high.
Congrats to PS3 on a good week, hopefully we see more.
Peter Vazkey @ Jul 3rd 2008 12:48AM
Lol I think its funny how you PS guys get all mad when someone says one bad/true thing about the PS3. I own all 3 systems, guess which one I play the less and have only one game for? The PlayStation 3.
