Stringer of Sony: game profits are on top of our list
The Chairman of the Sony Corp., Howard Stringer, stated today at a shareholder meeting in Tokyo that their top management priority is "to restore profitability in our television and game businesses." This comes after Sony's game division predicted profit for for the first time in three years, due to reduced cost of producing the PS3 and broadened game software lineup. Sony's game division has lost over 3.4 billion dollars the past two years under his leadership, so it isn't surprising profits in that area are in Stringer's (and obviously, Sony's) best interest.Stringer also feels that "we are not No.1 in my mind yet," and with the Wii projected to sell 25 million units this fiscal year while the PS3 is predicted to sell 10 million, we can see why Stringer would feel such a sentiment.

Just keeping pumping out superior game exclusives like Metal Gear Solid 4 to the system.....and Sony will be back in profits in the game division no problem.
Speaking of which, Im gone to play MGS4
catch ya'll later

Exactly, continue putting out good games in a good intervals of time, replace the 40GB SKU w/ newer SKU and bring update 2.40 out ASAP and you will see your profit.

True, though MGS4 had nothing to do with Sony, being a Konami product.
/sigh, I think they're going to have to go back into "evil" mode. I was really happy about this generation and their stance on not bribing for exclusivity, while instead having superior hardware and cheaper licensing fees attract developers instead. Well, unfortunately, Microsoft IS evil and shells out millions to keep games away from the PS3. As much as I hate to say it... sometimes you gotta fight fire with fire, Sony.

well said Lars! Couldn't agree more...sad, but true

Fire the person who let the 80 GB PS3 go out of supply. Even if it's yourself.
Lars @ Jun 20th 2008 1:59PM
You mean 60 GB?
I'd say fire the person that let the 40GB atrocity be made.
Jon Acheson @ Jun 20th 2008 2:06PM
No, the thing is, while I like my 60 GB a lot, I can see how they needed to consolidate parts and make it cheaper.
The 80 GB, on the other hand, there is no excuse for.
Lars @ Jun 20th 2008 2:11PM
I see.
I thought they should have kept the 20GB around as the cheap model. It was $350 everywhere I looked back then. I don't need memory card readers and I prefer wired networking to wireless, so I'd be happy to lose those and save $50 or $150 bucks.

10 million PS3's vs 25 million Wii's seems pretty good. People buy Wii's just to have them. I bought one and hardly ever touch it. My mom even bought one, and she hasn't touched it since the first week.
