The biggest games of the summer have launched.
Grand Theft Auto IV and
Metal Gear Solid 4 have found places on the shelves of millions of gamers and all is well and good. Or is it? What will you do when these games are finished, in your eyes? Is there more to be had this summer, or is it time to pull out the ol' SNES and finally master that
F-Zero track? Maybe even crack out the ol' NES and finally realize games have become much simpler since the days of
Battletoads?
We've always got plenty of use for our PS3 -- it's playing our movies, music, and anything we've got stuck on our external hard drives. There are a ton of games to rent and even more in our backlog. While there aren't any big releases until later on in the year, we'll be plenty busy until then. Want to know
last week's poll results? Take a look after the cut.

What did we expect when we put this poll up? The results are what we feel also -- this is one of the greatest games we've played. It holds a special significance if you've spent the last twenty years of your life following the path of Solid Snake. It's like you've grown older with him (but at a much slower rate). If it's your first time journeying with Snake, Otacon, and the rest, do yourself a favor and go play the others. Emulators may be necessary for the NES and SNES games. As always, thanks for voting!

I'm waiting for Wipeout HD and that's my next game-to-play for the summer, other than that there isn't much on the list. I completed my backlog before MGS4 came out due to boredom and lack of owned games to cycle through.
alice @ Jun 22nd 2008 10:42PM
No option for "will be playing the games I already have"?

Screw the backlog, Battlefield: BC & Overlord are asking to be played. Also, trying to finish my 3rd MGS 4 playthrough with no kills, no alerts..etc..on The Boss Hard. I've also got MGO, which truly shines when you play the team-based games, like capture.
rainking187 @ Jun 23rd 2008 12:12AM
Yes, very excited for Battlefield. I'd like to get Overlord as well, but $60 for a slightly improved port of a game you can get on the 360 for $20? What? Definitely waiting for a price drop on that one.
halebound00 @ Jun 22nd 2008 10:59PM
Battletoads....thanks Nick, I will have nightmares about those jetski-thingy scenes, or the rappelling pits. I effin hated those parts of the game. In fact, that was probably the most difficult game I ever played. I hate that game. I gotta find some place to DL it and play it just to work out some of my unresolved teenage angst.
eclipse27 @ Jun 23rd 2008 2:25AM
Join the club, Loved Battletoads but it too damn hard indeed, the final stage is no joke.........i have an emulator for NES if you want it as some type of an attachment
Burns11 @ Jun 22nd 2008 11:12PM
Top Spin 3 and Bad Company release this week, as well as Hail to the Chimp and Overlord. Two weeks later Civ Revolution and NCAA football release. Two weeks later Soul Caliber 4, two weeks later Madden two weeks later Tiger Woods, Hell's Highway and Mercenaries 2 and that takes us through august until the fall releases start.
Where does the idea that there will be nothing new to play come from?
edge @ Jun 22nd 2008 11:37PM
Waiting for Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, probably the game I look forward to the most right now. ;) And with online play, I suspect it'll keep me busy all summer long.
EDW @ Jun 22nd 2008 11:19PM
what are you talking about Nick? i've yet to pick up MGS4 (i know, i know, but i was out of town over the last 2 weeks) and i still have Bad Company, SC4, and Disgaea 3 to look forward to before the summer is officially over.
ElStefio @ Jun 22nd 2008 11:25PM
I've decided to play though Final Fantasy VII... again
A person @ Jun 22nd 2008 11:26PM
I definitely have games to go through that are already out. They're just so expensive to buy, so I usually only buy one every 4 or 5 months.
Mattchewie @ Jun 22nd 2008 11:47PM
I'm going to rent titles as BF:BC and QW. I still need to beat No More Heros on the wii, Play all MGS in order :D.
...Uhh.....what else....Oh mass effect..just to try it....and....I think with that I will be pretty busy till August or so...I believe the next titles on my "ohh yeah need to play that" list is Force Unleashed....However, I need to recheck release dates...
Prince King @ Jun 23rd 2008 12:00AM
theres no option for CoD4
Alex @ Jun 23rd 2008 12:02AM
this is definitely the YEAR OF THE FIGHTER!!!
what i'm looking forward to for this summer (and this year as a whole):
- Street Fighter II: Super Turbo HD REMIX
- Soul Calibur IV
- Tekken 6, prolly not a summer release
- Street Fighter IV, definitely not a summer release
fans of fighting games like me have to cherish this time...
because i may have to wait almost a decade for something new. (that is a jab at the Street Fighter series ;p)
Lt-Amuro @ Jun 23rd 2008 12:29AM
I voted for the Backlog option, but in reality, there are a few games coming out for the PS3 that I still want this summer, Soul Calibur IV being chief in my mind. (This should be called the generation of games with 4 in the title.)
lobotomies4free @ Jun 23rd 2008 1:41AM
Metal Gear just has to last me till LittleBigPlanet, and I'm sure it will
dancingtosirens @ Jun 23rd 2008 2:16AM
Im waiting for my copy of Metal Gear Solid: The essential collection to arrive in the mail.
In the meantime I have been playing Super Mario RPG.
I love the SNES more then anything.
klexam @ Jun 23rd 2008 2:42AM
Metal Gear Online will last a while. I also never got a chance to ramp up my Burnout Paradise the way I wanted to. I will also be playing COD4 multiplayer again. I never finished GTAIV before playing MGS4. There are several things to keep us all busy.
carl @ Jun 23rd 2008 2:54AM
This week I hit a momentous occasion in my gaming addiction. I am completely up to date on all my consoles. I have every game that I want. For the first time in my life my wish list is empty.
For once I am really pleased that we get a summer drought as I get to spend money on other things rather than games and I get to reduce my credit card bill for the next 3 months!
Its time to start on my 300 game+ backlog of shame. I worked it out that my PS3 completed games ratio is 25%.
The only purchases I will be making over the summer are PSN titles such as Wipeout HD and Pixel Junk Eden. I have heard that Echochrome is only getting a PSP UMD release in Europe and will not be coming out for PS3 on the store or I would have got that as well.
I think that game companies are making a serious retail mistake by ignoring the summer months and cramming all the big releases into the pre christmas window, so many titles just get buried in the competition when they could have had a much better chance in the drought. MGS4 sales surely showed that people dont stop buying games just because its summer, I mean screw the outside world, sunny or not its still only worth a 6/10 on a good day.
mezzanine @ Jun 23rd 2008 3:03AM
Wipeout HD, Siren: Blood Curse.
motorer @ Jun 23rd 2008 3:42AM
these are all games i bought but never got around to playing cause of stupid "responsibilities"
Final Fantasy XII (just started it a few days ago)
Folklore
Resistance
Vegas2
Oblivion
MGS4 (again and again and again!)
Mass Effect (pc)
bioshock (pc)
and mix in a bunch of FFXI, cod4 and unreal3.
i'd like to play through metroid prime and re4 again too.
I'll also grab soul calibur 4 when that comes out
cripes! Now that've written all that down, it seems I've got PLENTY to keep me busy!
Brodie-san @ Jun 23rd 2008 4:10AM
I wish companies would just stop making games for a few months so I could catch up
:)
boradley @ Jun 23rd 2008 8:37AM
well it's the middle of winter here ;) i'm looking forward to filling my spring and summer with disgaea3 and valkyria chronicles :D

You know what's awesome about having all 3 consoles? I have sooooooooo many games to play!
...you know what SUCKS about having all 3 consoles? I have soooo many games to play. :(
Seriously, it's like I never finish anything anymore, because I keep shifting focus to the newest game. I think I'll get through Metal Gear Solid 4 just fine, but after that, I have to freaking choose between 6 Wii titles, 4 360 titles, 9 DS titles, and the upcoming games for all of them!
it's a blessing and a curse, I tell ya.
Christian @ Jun 23rd 2008 6:09AM
Voted backlog too, but seriously there is a lot of stuff that just came out or is coming out very soon to keep anyone busy. Been playing Civilization Revolution lately and its a shame it got 'burried' in the MGS launch as it is a fun game. Also got Overlord which I have only played for a few hours, but which is another game which so far have been fun.
And even if I don't buy any new games I still have a lot left of MGS, GTA IV and Burnout Paradise. If I seem to always come back to playing Warhawk :)
marvdsf @ Jun 23rd 2008 6:53AM
Another waiting for Wipeout HD.....
Will Echochrome get a European Release? I get tired of witing for SCEE to pull their finger out, I'd get it from the US Store but I want to play with my euro friends.
OAKside @ Jun 23rd 2008 7:11AM
BFBC and Blu-rays, I can't afford much more anyway. :/
Damn was MGS4 good ... Shadow Moses!
MikeAitch @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:30AM
With the drop in the number of decent articles and frequency of updates on ps3fanboy I doubt we'll be seeing this place come summer!!

Very strange article... Make it sound like there's nothing after MGS4! Yet, two articles below, there's the WEEKLY release list with SIX GAMES!
* Battlefield: Bad Company
* Top Spin 3
* Wall-E
* Hellboy: Science of Evil
* Overlord: Raising Hell
* Hail to the Chimp
I cannot afford buying one game per week (that's 52 games per year). Yet, this week I have a choice of 6 new games, including some decent one.
No, life is not over, now that MGS4 is out. Sure, there's no games being released this summer as good as MGS, but hey, I remember the time when we were lucky to get ONE game per MONTH during the summer time.
So no, I would not complaint. Plenty of great games to finish so far, and tons coming in during what is usually the dead season. How cool is that! (Well, not so cool for the wallet)
catonmyhead @ Jun 23rd 2008 10:42AM
I'd say MGS4 is more of an "interactive movie", than a game.
marvdsf @ Jun 23rd 2008 11:27AM
I would as well, hrs of cutscenes with a little gaming to fill the gaps. Beware though, saying anything against MGS4 usually means your comment is voted to grey..
Roto13 @ Jun 23rd 2008 10:48AM
I just got my PS3 yesterday with MGS 4. I'll most definitely be picking up Soul Calibur IV when it's released. There's nothing else this summer that's really calling out to me, but I'll probably end up picking up something else just because I have a new PS3. :P
Jon Acheson @ Jun 23rd 2008 10:57AM
Mercenaries 2 hits in August. Hopefully it will be the fun sandbox game GTA IV wasn't.

Nick Doerr, your snes nes fanny boy is showing.
Nick Doerr @ Jun 23rd 2008 3:41PM
XD
More like video game fanny boy. My allegiance lies with excellent games.
tf2psycho @ Jun 23rd 2008 11:34AM
over the summer on ps3 i will be playing ...socom confrontation, battlefield BC, MGO, little big planet, & killzone2
catonmyhead @ Jun 23rd 2008 3:54PM
You should also say that you'll be playing in your "time machine", cause most of those titles aren't due till Fall or Christmas!
boxmyth @ Jun 23rd 2008 5:00PM
Disgaea 3 and Wipeout HD will be my next purchases this summer. Until then, I still have Folklore and Chrono Trigger (Final Fantasy Anthologies edition) to get through.
