Rumor: Does this image show a PS3 trophy screen? [UPDATE]

Click for high resolution
Seriously, we have no idea. This image just landed into our tips box with a short message stating that it is a leaked picture of 2.40's trophy support. Whether that's true or not is up for discussion. The tipster calls himself "The Patriots," so there's a chance that this is just the beginning of a new S3 Project which will end with us being transformed into some kind of sneaky government super soldiers. Here's hoping.
Things that make this image seem legit include a lack of blur (seriously, why does every "leaked" image or video have to be super blurry and hard to make out?), not to mention that this is clearly photographed from a monitor. We've checked and that Clank avatar is a real PS3 avatar. Not exactly conclusive evidence, but enough to keep us speculating, for now.
And speculating is all we can do, at this point. If the image is real, does it show a PS3 Gamercard? You'll notice that the trophy page is only one of three, so what's on the others? No doubt we'll see and hear more of this over the next few weeks in the run up to 2.40's release. Unless the image is fake, in which case we probably won't be hearing anymore about it for a long time. If ever.
[UPDATE] Take a look after the jump for more images, details on how trophies will work and some information on in-game XMB.
[Thanks, The Patriots]

Another tipster, calling himself "Gassy Snake," claims that he is a game developer who can vouch for The Patriots. He claims that the above image is real and, to prove it, proceeded to send us a picture of one of the other pages. These pages are called "gamer card" and "compare," though these are not the official titles. As you can see below, your gamer card/box/profile (whatever you want to call it) will feature a trophy total and a "level." There also seems to be some room for extra information of some kind.

Click for high resolution
Gassy Snake also tells us that each trophy type will be worth a different number of points, so there are limits to how many of each trophy are in a single game. In order to progress through levels you will need to gain a certain number of trophy points. This number will increase with each level, making it more difficult to reach higher levels.
Also, with regards to in-game XMB, we've been told that "you can do most things" in-game, including comparing trophies. Some things will require you to leave the game, however. Pressing the PS button once will bring up the XMB in-game, and holding the button down will show you the same menu you see pre-2.40. That means that no features are being removed. Tasty.
All this info? One pretty huge rumor. There are no facts in this article -- or, at least, none that we're certain about. Both of our tipsters might be pulling our leg. We'd like to think not, but there's always that chance. Make what you will of the info contained in this post, but don't come crying to us if it's wrong. We'll be busy crying to our new pals The Patriots and Gassy Snake. Enjoy speculation responsibly and in moderation.

Hopefully there is something tied into the system that lets you know why/how you got the trophy.
Wrathbringer @ Jun 23rd 2008 7:45PM
If there wasn't then it would be an EXTREMELY pointless trophy system.
Well at least there's hope that it'll come out soon. I'm still remaining skeptical, however...
AnimaOnline @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:09PM
The system presented here looks like it ticks all the boxes. I've no doubt Sony would try and combat Microsoft's Gamercard system and this looks like it has done it perfectly without ripping Microsoft's ideas off.
A level system would be nice rather than Xbox 360's Gamerscore.
My guess is that this is legit but never say never.

Love how the bottom of the monitor says... DELL

DELL makes TV's....

I play my PS3 on a Dell monitor over component cables.
Ian @ Jun 24th 2008 3:45AM
Not sure what you mean by that comment. If you're implying some sort of fakery just because it's on a Dell display then you're showing some ignorance as Dell make some good quality LCD displays (1920x1200) with DVI & HDMI ports and full HDCP support - so you can easily connect up a PS3. I've got a 24" model myself that I use with my console...

I play my PS3 on my 22inch Dell moniter.
Works like a freaking dream, what are you trying to imply.
JerJerBinks @ Jun 29th 2008 1:14PM
Also, Sony dev kits are not PS3's but a device that is more like a PC ... to which you an attach any brand of monitor.
Dan Davis @ Jun 23rd 2008 7:46PM
I just had a thought... if these trophies are going to be implemented for all games (including older games via patch), am I going to be bombarded with trophies the first time I boot up say, Tiger Woods 08 (which I have pretty much dominated)?
CrzyNick @ Jun 24th 2008 12:09AM
I hope they give you trophy from thing like the clear data off your hdd(so I don't have to play them all over again).

hmmmmmmm it looks real com on someone put the ps3 update file of 2.40 on world wide web i want it now
sUKi @ Jun 23rd 2008 7:51PM
It's better than leaked shots taken by a camera phone on an SDTV though!
Cidi @ Jun 23rd 2008 7:51PM
Well if I recall correct Trophy will be for Home to put them into your.. ehm Home. So I`m not sure if it will do much in the XMB unless Home is released it might just be a function that you can already unlock them and then put them directly in your house in Home.
For the screen itself, I have to say that the image for the circle button looks strange and streched, while 0 and o are displayed normal.
Nick @ Jun 23rd 2008 8:08PM
2D Trophies are coming with the 2.4 update. It's been confirmed by Sony in the PS Blog. I guess they'll have their own little section in the XMB.
V Terror @ Jun 23rd 2008 7:58PM
Seems he has the same hi resolution monitor I have, well if this image has no ties to the trophy system, the tipster still has very nice taste.
agm2502 @ Jun 23rd 2008 8:59PM
Could be good, if true it seems that rather having a numbered "gamerscore" you will just have the number of games finished with platinum rating e.g. everything unlocked etc. you would still have achievements though, so maybe if you have 50% achievements unlocked you get the bronze trophy etc
Fraser JK @ Jun 23rd 2008 8:18PM
I CAN NOT WAIT!
jgpliskin @ Jun 23rd 2008 8:20PM
Font's a bit bold but here's hoping.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Jun 24th 2008 12:36AM
well you can change ur PS3 font if you didnt know. you do it in the Settings>Themes menu. i think the font at least is legit. anyway, here's hoping.
jgpliskin @ Jun 24th 2008 6:46AM
I did know but completely forgot :s. I like the standard font so have never changed.
RavenPaul @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:05PM
Wow, looks terrible. Looks like something that should be on the Atari 2600. I am excited about the update, but this looks like crap.
|-|3R0 @ Jun 23rd 2008 8:40PM
Personally it looks like what you would look at when look at one of your friend's trophies. See it has the name of the Friend in the corner, then you can scroll through pages to look at other things, and there's a back button which means this pops up when you are looking at your friends trophies and now you going back to the XMB. Do you agree?

Lmao the guys sending in all this info The Patriots and Gassy Snake hmmm i just got an urge to play MGS
tretle @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:14PM
I'm a bit apprehensive about this as someone threatened the Sony blog guys saying "If you don't give us any more details on firmware 2.40 the rumors will start Tuesday or something like that.
Be wary, thats all.
whoelse @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:06PM
"Pressing the PS button once will bring up the XMB in-game, and holding the button down will show you the same menu you see pre-2.40." Thats what i had always suspected :)
fran @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:14PM
Played Gassy on MGO, legit guy, I'm convinced this is real.
anthonyjh @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:09PM
You knew? 2.4 was one of our most secret black projects!
Cidi @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:09PM
I think JD is behing all of that. :D
I just hope the thing works better then the Gamerscore and is less of a contest of "who has the larger one". I don`t need any kind of number to get the most out of a game or try certain things.
Looking more forward for the In-Game XMB, hope starting music is not one of the things where you have to quit the game.
Darren @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:12PM
Is it true that Installing 2.40 will transform our PS3's into Metal Gear Rex?
Organic_Shadow @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:16PM
Actually seems pretty legit to me. Looks like one of Sony's code monkeys is showing us a debug build of the trophy alerts, seeing as we're seeing blank templates here.
I'm fine with this, and assume that when Home hits, our trophy room will basically just reflect all of these trophies, ie: the trophies in the XMB and those in your Home are one in the same, just different display methods.
Sony would be smart if they can deliver us a stable build of Home by September, with or without a lot of features, and slowly roll everything out in an open beta method like Gmail and Steam. Slowly adding features, fixing things, tweaking, changing stuff based on feedback, and making general improvements.
I think Sony's issue right now is dealing with the fact that they would need to merge the Home team with all of the PSN teams, and make one giant team for all of that. They KNOW that would be the best way of getting all this stuff straightened out but obviously don't want to go through the short term difficulties. JUST RIP THE BANDAID OFF!!
Cidi @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:36PM
Don`t have to be a Sony code monkey. Developers are geting updates before they go live so they can carry out there testing with the Updates and make sure there is no problem when running the game with the new Firmware. Especially with 2.40 and In-Game XMB this is important for stability testing. So far when a game used parts of the XMB In-Game (i.e. Kane and Lynch when in a online Lobby and opening the XMB Friendslist part) it was always running slow during that time and has a higher chance to crash the system. So the improvements made with the last Firmware update may be even only to prepare the system for the In-Game XMB.
tretle @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:19PM
fran, does he have the same avatar as the one posted in the screen/mockup when you played him online?
Sam @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:23PM
I can't help but wonder whether the in-game XMB means that you'll be able to listen to music while playing a game. That's one of the few features the 360 has over the PS3 in my opinion.
Organic_Shadow @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:25PM
My only problem with that, is that I want my music to REPLACE the music of whatever game im playing- not just play ON TOP OF that music. Does the 360's music feature work that way? Because it replaces the music in a handful of PS3 games like the bowling PSN game and SSDHD. I would prefer it just be done like those games did it, and make it a game feature, not an XMB feature.
Sony would just need to make that feature a requirement of games for certification etc. like MS does with achievements and other features.
Cidi @ Jun 23rd 2008 9:41PM
Yes on the 360 the custom music is replaced by the original one, but in some cases this is a bit bad because i.e. when a cutscene starts the music doesn`t stop. I never tried this in games with a lot of cutscenes and mainly for racing games like RPG or Forza, but I know that this is the case in GTA4 that the music just keeps running.
dnlkk94 @ Jun 23rd 2008 11:02PM
@ Cidi - That would suck if you were play MGS... =O
Eggy @ Jun 24th 2008 7:12AM
I have said that many times before, in game xmb doesn't mean that custom soundtracks are supported. The latter is already possible on the PS3 though. Some games (too few if you'd ask me) have implemented it.
