Koller promises more first and third party games, less ports
It's undeniable that the PSP is in the middle of a serious software drought. Even John Koller, PSP's main marketing man in America, acknowledges that. Why the sudden drop of games, after the successful launches of games like God of War: Chains of Olympus and Crisis Core? It's simple -- PSP wasn't performing too well earlier in its life cycle, and developers have only recently woken up to the incredible potential of the PSP as a platform. "I think what you're seeing is the result of decisions made 18 months ago, a development cycle ago when hardware sales weren't as strong as they are now and we were shifting demographics from that older, professional consumer to the teen group. There was kind of a little bit of a lull in hardware sales 18 to 20 months ago; you're seeing the results today from those decisions back then."
Since then, Koller and the Sony team has been going on a publisher "road show," and according to Koller, their efforts to envigorate the PSP development community has been successful. "Our worldwide studio team is actively developing titles for that platform and we've been on a road show amongst every, major third-party publisher -- which we actually just finished last week -- and have been talking to them about really how to publish on the PSP, and the level of excitement is really palpable."
When can we expect new game announcements? Well, that's up to each publisher. However, Koller promises that "we're going to see a very good lineup of quality franchise titles coming over to the PSP that are really unique." In fact, "you're not going to see many ports anymore, and I think that's good." We'd agree.

what a bunch of bs spewing from his mouth, lol. go read some comments at ign. sony would ban you from the forum for all the people dissing sony, lol. sony deserves to be bashed. another 9 months for gps,lol to late got a gps today. people are getting tired of waiting and are getting antsy. sony better wake up and listen to there customers here in north america and eu.
matt @ Jun 26th 2008 12:29PM
Agree totally. Typical BS from a Sony exec that everything is great ("PS3 continues to grow stratospherically") and continued proof that Sony US are incompetent. Where to even start. I take issue with the fact that the PSP was supposedly marketed to the "older" demographic. I am in the older demo and I feel most of the games are directed towards the younger demo. I also loved his response that Sony "waits for the market to be at the correct point for us to lauch a product." I hate to tell you this John, put you missed the GPS market. If you had lauched it a year or 2 ago when people were asking for it you could have raked in the money. Instead, the GPS market exploded this past XMAS and Sony still doesn't have one. Worse, people are pissed that your GPS costs $200 which is more than what a GPS costs plus the fact that you have to buy a $200 PSP to run it. You're also way behind on the PSP camera, ALL 1.3MPix of it. Every cell phone kills that number. You're also missing the PS1 market. Fans have been begging for this for a while and you still don't think its viable. Instead you place blame on the 3rd parties. MORON!!

Actually for once what they said doesn't sound like BS. This is the first of these articles that uses valid reasoning and gives the impression that they will make a real effort, or already have started doing so.

I agree with the comments it seems like a lot of mistakes have been made regarding new games for psp, and sony seem to have lost their way and dont know where to go. I feel they could start to claw their way out of the hole they are in by doing the following........
1.start releasing more of the ps1 back catalogue on the uk and us stores ( not 1 or 2 games every month or so). I also dont see the point in releasing platinum psp games on the site considering 90% of the uk dont want to wait 2 hours for the game to download
2.A few more psp only versions of games ...exclusive g.t.a for psp with new city/story etc anyone....
3.start telling game developers what we want , i mean re-doing final fantasy 1 + 2 was a good idea but i seriously think they could have tripled sales by releasing an updated ff6 , it aint rocket science.
4. A simpler interface system - you either are gonna use wi-fi or you aint cos you dont have a clue .
I was looking for a copy of crisis core onthe high street and was shocked at what i found .....Tesco`s psp chart was woefully out of date as of 04/07/2008 (metal gear portable ops at number 1!!!!!),no sign of god of war or lego indy, no sign of crisis core .....Wh smith ...dont stock psp games ....gamestation and game ....all psp titles shoved in between 2nd hand ps2 and gamecube games.....WTF!!!!!
Ed @ Jun 25th 2008 10:30AM
We've heard all this before. Show, don't tell.
Alien @ Jun 26th 2008 12:29PM
Well yes , I agree with you first party-wise ( even tough there where many great 1st party games there is a franchise or two what they still didnt put on the PSP and could help ) 3rd party wise hes right. Ubisoft actually decided to focus on the DS more at the end of 06 , so hes explanation is plausable . Same with EA , just that they actually still make more on the PSP , despite moving more teams to the DS ;)
Jacksons @ Jun 25th 2008 11:33AM
Cool, cool. How about the PlayStation Store? Japan has Crash Team Racing and now I'm all jealous.
Bryan S. @ Jun 25th 2008 12:08PM
K, great. I want proof though!
Joe @ Jun 25th 2008 11:56AM
I hope Gekido is still coming out. Plus the Resident Evil and Devil May Cry games Capcom said they were making back in 2005.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Jun 26th 2008 12:29PM
Well. at least it seems like they're trying.
They'd better have a big reveal for the PSP. Like, major killer-app reveal otherwise I'm gonna be pissed. I know LocoRoco 2 is most likely gonna be announced and I am super-excited for it, but if it's a half-assed copy of the original, I think I'm going to go Kratos on somebody and rip their head off.
DelSource @ Jun 25th 2008 2:19PM
Games like Echochrome, LocoRoco and Patapon prove that you can make a great PSP game and good seller for little money and in a matter of just a few months. Give us these things regularly, punctuated with a big title every few months, and we may be placated.....I think.
Oh yeah, and a F*CKING KEYBOARD ATTACHMENT.
Slim @ Jun 25th 2008 4:20PM
OK, I personally love all the ports on the PSP, Sony needs to realize that some people only own a PSP and not a PS2 or PS3 on top of it. If you own a more powerful system and have the option to buy a title for it instead of the PSP then ok, it's redundant to that person. But lots of people just have a PSP and want to see the ports keep on coming.
atastysammich @ Jun 25th 2008 6:52PM
Waitwaitwait! Less ports is great and all, but how about we get Jumping Flash 2 on the Playstation Store first?
bryansurvive @ Jun 25th 2008 6:08PM
dont mean to sound greedy but i want first, and third party PLUS ports. i mean come on japan got xenogears?? thats awesome.
Jeremy @ Jun 26th 2008 12:11AM
Ugh. What a disappointing interview. Sony really seems to be clueless these days.
Lots of big talk, but nothing of substance. And I hate how they dismissed the PS1 titles "Oh, we don't bring over every title." Hello! You haven't brought over any titles at all hardly.
Also disappointing that no near future plans for the GPS in the US. 9 months, maybe? Japan got that what, 2 years ago?
Johnny2Times @ Jul 1st 2008 5:24AM
Its pretty clear the PSP is already a dead system. Stores in my area have been reducing and moving their PSP sections for the past 6 months. The Walmart Super Center near my home only has 4 PSP games. The rest of the shelf space is filled with a couple of UMD movies and lots of empty spaces. I don't know how much longer this can go on. I'm actually thinking about offloading my PSP before the buy back price drops any further.
