Bishojo game White Album coming to PS3
What the heck is a Bish?jo game, you ask? It is a "Japanese video game centered around interactions with attractive anime girls." In the latest issue of Dengeki Daioh magazine, it was announced an anime adaptation of the 1998 erotic dating-sim White Album will be released along with a PS3 game based on this version. The original game was unusual for a dating-sim because the main character already has a girlfriend. A scan of the magazine can be found here.
Considering the abundance of such games in the PS2 era, we are not surprised this genre is starting to take off on the PS3. In a way, it shows that the PS3 has reached a wider audience and is becoming more mainstream in Japan.

Is there really a need for these types of games...?

If there wasn't a demand, there most assuredly would not be a supply. Not everything is made with a the US market in mind ;)

Be easy with your judgments. One might also ask if there is a "need" for games where you steal cars, or shoot people to death with guns, or viciously torment innocent mushrooms by jumping on them with an overweight plumber. Though I've never seen one of these games in action, if they are popular, then clearly some people find a "need" for them as entertainment.
It takes all kinds.

The Japanese really freak me out once in awhile. Who else could come up with Hentai and dating sims?

I would rather play a two handed FPS than a one handed slightly animated comic book any day.
Twitching eyes and two-frame mouth movements don't qualify as animation in my book.

These games are meant to tell a story, not to provide a testosterone-fueled adrenaline rush.

Man, I thought this was some kind of news about the Beatles white album... I'm bummed.
