Diablo 3 lead designer says it won't be on PS3
For those of you who haven't been online the last day or so, you are probably the only ones who doesn't know Diablo 3 has been announced. There's been rumors about the likelihood/unlikelihood of a console version, and now we can put those rumors to rest. In Joystiq's exclusive interview with lead designer Jay Wilson, he said they "don't have any plans" for a console version. This really is too bad though, as we geniunely felt if any console had the chance of a Diablo 3 port, it would be the PS3. And here we were, hoping we won't have to upgrade our computers when it comes out...

The only problem is: This is all nothing but hype, and no-one needs another Diablo. Now, back to GT5P, GTA4, and MGS4...!
Prothean @ Jun 29th 2008 9:19AM
There's another problem. If you like Diablo type games, there isn't anything like that on PS3.
ryan @ Jun 29th 2008 10:05AM
actually there is a diablo like game on PS3:
Untold Legends Dark Kingdom
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
and the upcoming Sacred 2.
KUV1977 @ Jun 29th 2008 10:23AM
Diablo3 hype will be more justified than GTA4 and GT5(P) hype was...
In my book the only game from your list worth some of the hype was MGS4 and i played all three of them... GT5P looks great and thats about it. GTA4 has good gameplay but is technically a disaster (no AA and still real bad frame rate)... Diablo 3 will most probably be as close to 'perfection' in terms of gameplay and visuals as a hack and slay can get when it releases, as Blizz usually doesn't publish betaesque stuff.. there is a reason that man companies tried to clone Diablo. Unfortunately all of them failed miserably..
Diablo3 looks awesome thus far and if neccessary i will most gladly upgrade my PC for this...

You cant possibly be serious, the Diablo series is a gaming icon. Now you can bash Blizzard for a lack of originality, but don't bash Diablo. Diablo and Diablo2 are the best hack and slash games ever created.
Devin @ Jun 29th 2008 11:54AM
Exactly, Diablo is an awesome series and because the PS3 supports Mouse + Keyboard, I was really looking forward to this coming to it. O well, I will be upgrading my PC in the near future, so now I have justification for it.....

You may not need to upgrade your computer. Blizzard has a way of making their games very accessible to all players of all economic situations.
Seriously, who can't afford a computer that can play wow? Even when Wow was first launced the system requirements were never that high like say...Crysis, Company of Heroes (dx10 version) or World At War (dx10 version) was.
Blizzard has always been a fairly good company that understanding that the more computers your game will run on, the greater the chances to yield more profit become.
Prothean @ Jun 29th 2008 9:17AM
At least there's a Mac version so I won't have to play in Boot Camp!
Reuben @ Jun 30th 2008 12:47AM
My thoughts exactly! I just hope that it can run on my slightly upgraded black macbook, or at least my imac desktop.
matt @ Jun 29th 2008 9:30AM
I didn't expect any console version, and if there is one it would no doubt be long after the PC release, at which point I would have already played it on PC.
sean @ Jun 29th 2008 9:38AM
can we have a cat day? one whole day with every post having a picture of a cat. if u need pictures let me know my camera is charged and have 2 cats willing to do it lol. let me know.lol
sorry really tired ;(
JerJerBinks @ Jun 29th 2008 10:58AM
That would be great, but LOLcats is not funny. Frankly, if PS3Fanboy had a LOLcats day, it might drive me over to X360Fanboy.
Nova MK X @ Jun 29th 2008 2:45PM
Screw Blizzard then....... since they got that shoddy crap WoW their game and release quality has gone downhill.
No Diablo 3 on PS3 , stupidest(sp?) move ever.
Mr.ESC @ Jun 29th 2008 5:53PM
Yeah because the Ps3 market is so much important than the PC market.Ha ha lol.
Diablo 3 in the Ps3 would require blizzard to do an especial engine and that would take some time and that could negatively affect the PC version and who knows if it investment would be worthy I mean they can’t just port it unless you want a broken mess. Console players only know JRPG and a handful of RPG, the product would be a hard sale for console players that don’t know what Diablo is ( If you haven’t played Diablo you should feel bad about yourself ) in certain territories.
At the end is matter of good business.
Also do you really want Diablo 3 on the Ps3?, for real? If you ask me console players want it because Pc gamers have it. Blizzard have a negative view of consoles and that’s because they tried, Diablo 1 for the PSOne was a shadow of the Pc version and I don’t think I ever saw Diablo for the Psone in most sales charts.
Gamoc @ Jun 29th 2008 9:44AM
One thing: lolcats are not funny.
Anyway, godammit. I love Diablo, and I really wanted it on my PS3 so I didn't have to try and get it running on my PC, as I don't think my laptop will run it without exploding.
OAKside @ Jun 29th 2008 9:45AM
Wait 'til the pirates jack it. If they see the (inflated +misinterpreted +made-up +nonsense) numbers and still don't come running for cash ... lotsa respect for 'em. I also wouldn't have expected it to be on consoles (NTM there's there's a LONG time to flip-flop) but I guess it's a bit of a slow news day. ? :D
Senecal @ Jun 29th 2008 9:47AM
Why is Blizzard so anti-console. As bad as it was, the first Diablo worked out pretty well on PSOne (I bought it..) and I also played Warcraft 2(still own it..) on it... Im going to rally every one I can to bug Blizzard until they anounce a PS3 version!!
Popfrogs @ Jun 29th 2008 11:23AM
I guess they love piracy. The Crysis guys were quoted as saying PC piracy is as bad as 20:1 and I bet they're pretty close.
You'd think these devs would learn that the only place their games are "safe" are on consoles.
Xoviet chiK @ Jun 29th 2008 11:40PM
Love Piracy?
Blizzard is one of the most respected developers in the industry. At the end of the day, even the pirates buy their game - at launch even.
Plus, Blizzard has a great history of dealing with piracy. I don't see it becoming a problem with Diablo III (or StarCraft II for that matter).
Also, you should have absolutely no problem playing on your computer so long as it was made post 2003, even if you need to play it at the lowest setting. Blizzard has a great history of developing games that support cross-generation hardware configurations.

Meh, I was never a Diablo fan. Never understood the appeal. Click on something until it dies, then click on something else until IT dies, rinse, repeat 5 billion times. But still, why not consoles? it would fit just as well if not better, mashing the square button works just as well as mashing the left mouse button.
doc j @ Jun 29th 2008 2:22PM
"Click on something until it dies. Then click on something else until IT dies"
FPS: Walk around. Find something moving. Press shoulder button to kill it. Repeat.
Traditional RPG: Walk around. Find an enemy. Scroll through a series of lists until one of you dies. Repeat.
Sports: Swing the bat / Choose one of the six football plays that actually works / Move up and down the court/field/ice press X when close to goal/basket
RTS: Amass resources. Spend resources.
Etc., etc., etc.
Every genre has its repetition. I think the best comparison for Diablo is the FPS genre. Some people (not me) regularly complain that all FPS games are the same - and it's partially true. Yet fans of FPS gameplay are willing to shell out 60 dollars every 2 to 4 months for a "new" or original experience. The great thing about the Diablo series is that - so far - you can have a "new" or original experience by "clicking things to death" dozens of times before it gets old. There are literally thousands of ways to build your character, and while one or two version may be the "best" the other dozens of ways are usually viable at least through the first two difficulty settings. The great thing about these dozens of playthroughs is that it's a one time investment of 50 bucks.
Anyway, if the Diablo games aren't for you then that is totally fine - I'm not here to convince you to be as stoked for Diablo III as I am - but don't use that tired "all you do is click it to death" fallacy
Organic_Shadow @ Jun 29th 2008 2:24PM
If there's ever a Titan Quest 2, hopefully it comes to consoles too. That game is one of the best ARPG's I've ever played. Only problem I have is the music stuttering/stopping/skipping, with no patch in sight to fix this after it's been out for 2 years.
I can let the no-consoles D3 thing go, as long as a 360 version doesn't come out. Then PS3 should have one too to make it even and so they'll get more market penetration. Untold Legends players will need something to make up for that embarrassing game...
_sean_ @ Jun 29th 2008 12:42PM
I don't like WRPGs. Most Western games are terrible imo.
I definitely don't like DIABLO, and I couldn't care less.
Bring on that WKS and Valkyria though!
Phantom @ Jun 29th 2008 1:24PM
oh well , guess it's time to upgrade my PC . I've been needing to upgrade it for a while now , so this is just another reason to buy a new one .
Or do you guys think my 1 GB of RAM 5500 Geforce vid card and 3 GHz single core intel proccecer will be able to handle this .
doc j @ Jun 29th 2008 1:40PM
With a decently up to date rig like that, I would wait on upgrading. Blizzard games are usually generous in regards to system requirements and - with the exception of the cinematics - playing the game at its highest settings generally adds very little to the experience.
Popfrogs @ Jun 30th 2008 1:12AM
Blizzard games generally have terrible graphics (like WoW and the last 2 Diablos) that don't tax hardware at all. Yours will probably run it at 200 frames per second.
sibbor @ Jun 30th 2008 2:40AM
This game would beneath from the PS3 with mouse- and keyboard support, free PSN... etc.! Imagine Diablo 3 in 1080p and with 60 FPS... I would love to see that on my 104" projector canvas.
macserv @ Jun 29th 2008 3:27PM
I, and an increasing number of gamers, don't play games on my PC. They will not be getting our money. It is that simple. Personally, I think they'll realize this, and change their tune.
Phantom @ Jun 29th 2008 4:15PM
What so now we're gonna have a Wii vs 360 vs PS3 vs PC fanboy console war .
I atleast will be getting this game when it comes out , unless my PC can't play it , then I'm getting it once I've saved up and bought a new PC.
LiquidSun @ Jun 30th 2008 5:58AM
I totaly agree, I don't buy games on PC anymore. My last game was over 2 years ago. I buy only on console.
Diablo 3 is 80% hype, would be nice to try it out on my PS3 though.
Mr.ESC @ Jun 29th 2008 6:24PM
“Diablo 3 is 80% hype, would be nice to try it out on my PS3 though”.
It earned that hype with good reasons, Diablo II was epic and it should be on the top 10 best games ever made.
Diablo 3 really seems like fan service (Yet I will buy 3 LE copies) and maybe that’s the reason the want to keep it for PC only. I don’t think the investment on a Ps3 version would be worth it, how many people are going buy it for PS3? I feel most of you never played a Diablo game and you are just “butthurt” because you won’t have it.
If it was so important for you there would be like 1M petitions online already instead of some retarded hateful comments about Blizzard, good job people that will force Blizzard to deliver D3 oh especially when you name games that you will rather play.
Popfrogs @ Jun 30th 2008 1:15AM
@Mr.ESC: You don't even own a PS3, why do you bother to post here?
highman888 @ Jun 30th 2008 2:48PM
I'm debating whether I should even get it, blizzard's main strength is to make it look pretty, to toss in pretty video's, and have a pretty soundtrack in the backround. If you really think about it, with diablo games all you are doing is clicking. I'll repeat "all you are doing is clicking" With the occasional key pressing of 1-0 for use of a potion or mana potion, and mebbe a right click from time to time. I've beaten Diablo 1 and 2, it was fun to do a once through, then I asked myself, what's the point? Nothing.....and my mouse was dead tired almost destroyed...we have people like Hideo Kojima who pump out masterpieces that take intelligence thought and cunning, then we have "So called" masterpieces like Diablo where all you have to do "quite literally" is click!!!!!
ms07 @ Jun 29th 2008 6:14PM
I love ps3, but I could care less if it ever got ported. Piracy won't hurt D3 as much as it does for FPS or single player games, since the appeal of D3 is mostly because of battle.net.
Haiddasalami @ Jun 29th 2008 8:27PM
Unless you have a computer that is somewhat old (3-5 years) chances are you can play Diablo. Its not Crysis...atleast no one said PC gaming is dying..
Josh @ Jun 30th 2008 11:51PM
Why is it that whenever ther is a speaking kitten in a picture, it always has to have a speech impediment? I find it irritating and it makes me hungry (for kitten). Someone please send that kitten to a speech therapist or something.
Kadamon @ Jun 30th 2008 3:56AM
Wow, a lot of people have been disappointed over this, even though it's to be expected, I never thought I'd hear this much complaining over the internet about a lack of a console version.
Seriously, odds are it'll never happen, why would they bother?
Their dev times are insane as is, besides, they'll still sell at least five million copies of this game anyway, I know a few people are going to eventually buy it several times.
I own, outside of the Warcraft series, at least three copies of every game they've released, but that's because it's been so long ago.
Also Piracy means nothing to Blizzard, they're a ban-hammer happy company when it comes to online playing, which is more then 3/4's of the people that are going to play D3. In the end, odds are most of you are going to buy and try it.
ChaOS @ Jun 30th 2008 8:27AM
I'm very disappointed by this. I don't know what Blizzard has against consoles, but its very saddening. I know if it came out on both ps3/PC, I'd probably buy the ps3 version.

Any plans to bring Diablo 3 to console?
I don't know yet. A lot of it depends on whether we think the gameplay experience will be the same on console, especially regarding the controls. Also I'd like to keep our audience together. One question mark I have is whether the console owners would allow PC players to play against console gamers. I think the answer gets a lot easier if the console owners say yes. But at the moment they do like to have closed systems. But you know, I think what it really it comes down to is the game itself. We want to deliver what is the best experience possible so the controls and everything else have to be perfect. When you are developing for multiple platforms you sometimes have to compromise. We aren't willing to compromise. We have relationships with all the console manufacturers. I know they would love to have us on their platforms, ideally on their own and not their competitor! But it's all about the game experience.

doubleint @ Jul 1st 2008 1:01AM
Just because Blizzard made one Diablo for PSX does not justify it being on PS3. Blizzard splashed around with the PSX and Saturn soooo long ago and never came back. Blizzard is a PC company, they are not EA. Us PC gamers went through YEARS of nothing, this is our time to shine. So boo-hoo, if you don't like it, we don't care.
And on the subject of piracy, if a game is good enough pirates will buy it. Crysis sucks and they are just bitching because they can't make a good game so they blame the pirates. I'll admit I'm a pirate but I buy the games that are actually worth buying. Diablo, Diablo II, Warcraft, Warcraft II, Warcraft III, Half-Life, Half-Life 2, and Counter-Strike: Source just to name a few. The only thing piracy hurts is the company's that make shitty games, and good riddance I say.
And for those of you who say Diablo is nothing but point, click and repeat you have no idea the impact that Diablo had on the PC industry and on the gaming industry in general. You were just not there, it's that simple.
