Rock Band 2 is official and it's coming this year
IGN has released an interview with Dan Teasdale, Lead Designer at Harmonix, in which they discuss the evolution of the band-based gaming platform Rock Band. The sequel, Rock Band 2, will be available stateside sometime this year (the Xbox 360 version has a September release date). The interview reveals a lot of tasty info about the game and reiterates to us why Harmonix is the king of rhythm-based gaming.
There's a whole lot of interesting stuff to read about, but the most exciting has to be the fact that Rock Band 1 and 2 DLC will be completely compatible with both games. "As far as Harmonix is concerned, there's no difference between "Rock Band 1 DLC" and "Rock Band 2 DLC" – we're just releasing awesome songs every week onto the Rock Band platform." Are you listening, Activision?
Rock Band 2 will obviously have some advancements over the original, including new and improved features and instruments. Teasdale also teases about an amazing lineup of songs, with announcements to be made in the near future. Check out the full interview for more info about your new favorite rhythm game.
As for you European PS3 owners, still waiting for Rock Band 1 ... Try not to cry.

As an Xbox owner I could have got the first one in Europe, but there is no way I'm paying £180 for one game.
tonyt3rry @ Jun 30th 2008 7:38AM
id like to see the price of the first one to be the same as the us or maybe £100 not £150 the games not far off from being a year old
tan @ Jun 30th 2008 7:48AM
sure its a good game, heck i have it!
but atm they really have f*cked up there release times..
i mean the first game isn't even out in most of the world yet!!!
also in europe on 360 this game is pretty expensive... and with the upcoming guitar hero world tour looking better than this (imo) i won't see the need to buy this game..
Daniel Gaunt @ Jun 30th 2008 8:04AM
How can they do this to us!!! we still haven't even got Rock band. I went out and bought guitar hero because i was fed up of waiting and now I'm thinking why should i bother buying rock band when rock band 2 will be out 6 months later... I suppose they expect us Europeans to wait another 2-3 years for it though so we might get it by late 2010!
benny boy @ Jun 30th 2008 8:25AM
And Australians aren't even getting Rock Band 1 until Christmas this year!
Averna @ Jul 1st 2008 11:08AM
Yeah Im an Aussie and I was prepared to put down $300 for rock band on release... back before it was released in the US.
... Still waiting. Sure I could import it, but Id lose access to DLC... something that Rock Band needs.
At this stage, we'll get RockBand 2 before RockBand. Ill buy RockBand 2 but im so over RockBand
Archon @ Jun 30th 2008 8:36AM
Hahahaha. Imported it in January from the US. I'm enjoying all the DLC using my US account. And paid less than the dreaded 180 quid. Also, I'll probably import RB2 when it's out as well, as it won't probably be released in Europe till 2012...

The best way to think of it is as a $60 upgrade for people who have Rock Band and a crapload of DLC. Old instruments work, we get improved graphics, and hopefully improved gameplay as well. I don't think this will have as much appeal for new buyers though, the GH:WT drum set looks better.
Dan Davis @ Jun 30th 2008 3:30PM
And hopefully a ton of great new songs...
It sounds like they are really trying to cater to the females out there... I've been to a few RB parties where the girls pretty much sing exclusively.
ballernaz @ Jun 30th 2008 9:08AM
dam, these have to be so hard, gh world tour or this, i have to say, the gh world tour drums look sicker and the guitar has touch frets and i never got the dlc for gh3 so looks like im going based on song choice
macserv @ Jun 30th 2008 9:59PM
It's a tough call, but I'm going with GH World Tour. I've seen the RB2 Guitar... no new innovation, where the GH:WT guitar has an all new set of touch-sensitive pads near the base of the neck. The GH:WT drums also look awesome.
I think GH is going to retake the throne this time... whether or not they hold on to it remains to be seen.
ballernaz @ Jul 1st 2008 1:06PM
where did u see the rack band 2 guitar
True_Darknight @ Jun 30th 2008 9:52AM
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO wait... we still not learning from the numbers? Or maybe they did learn from all the zeros that M$ threw their way to make it a timed exclusive.
Sheesh... I could buy this for my nephews.. but i might just skip it cause i can't get it in september!
AF @ Jun 30th 2008 12:12PM
Time for the timed-exclusive crap to stop. I think I will stop buying games from companies that take money to screw over other customers. They don't want my money? I'm a second class citizen to them? Fine. I'll buy a game from somebody who does give a crap about PS3 owners.
HektikLyfe @ Jun 30th 2008 1:04PM
They are looking for customers, not fans. This is a business looking to make profit, not to make you happy or the game would be free.
I know timed exclusives are stupid but by "holding out" you are only keeping yourself from enjoying the experience.
This has become a roller coaster of DLC, hardware incompatibility and song exclusivity, you can't just jump off the train and expect it to come back for you.
AF @ Jun 30th 2008 11:06PM
Who said I wanted it to come back? There are plenty of other games to enjoy. And the business would make more profit if they sold the game at the same time on both systems. It's just a fact. By delaying, the marketing is less and the game is noticed by less people. If they wanted to really make money, they would release it on both. Taking hand outs and showing favoritism is just greed. Imagine this were any other industry. Imagine if Walmart chose to only sell people who used Matercard first, and then Visa users later, because Mastercard paid them to. So Walmart tells Visa users, "Sorry, none for you." I mean, did anybody think, "Wow, Paramount is awesome!" when they took that payoff to go HD DVD only? No, they were coporate scumbags. Same thing. So why should I buy something from a company who doesn't want to let me buy from them? I shouldn't. I don't need Rock Band 2-- there's GH and Konami's new game and untold others on the way. Screw 'em.
Marco Cano Jr @ Jun 30th 2008 12:56PM
/agreed
HektikLyfe @ Jun 30th 2008 1:00PM
Any Metallica on that list? Or are they exclusively Guitar Hero b*tches now?
Josh @ Jun 30th 2008 3:26PM
And Rock Band 1 songs on the disc? Those obviously won't carry over, right?
So if I want to play Creep or Green Grass and High Tides, I need to swap discs, right?
Whatever happened to Rock Band as a platform? I'm surprised nobody is talking about this.
Moorio - XBL: peacebyanymeans @ Jun 30th 2008 3:47PM
What the fuck do you expect them to do? Let you put in both discs at the same time?
Hunts314 @ Jun 30th 2008 5:55PM
theres no real way around that aside from installing the songs to the hard drive now is there? The PS3 could probably hold all the RB1 songs and the RB2 on a blu ray but I don't know about other systems. Who knows, it my fit on a DL DVD I don't know how big the first game (space wise) was to be honest.
They aren't cutting your old DLC out though like the Guitar Hero franchise has done since it came out and that makes me happy, I wouldn't expect them to carry the tunes from the first disc as well. At least I KNOW the money I put into the game won't be wasted when the new one arrives.
Yeah and releasing on the 360 first is garbage. they can't blame the unreal engine for this one (yes I know RB doesn't use it) lol.
