Sony already denies PS2 games for PSN
Sony has already denied the rumors regarding PS2 games for the PSN. Sony's Patrick Seybold, director of corporate communications & social media, spoke to GamePro: "I'm not sure where the image came from. At this point, we haven't made any announcements, and there are no plans for PS2 downloadable titles on PS3."
Take Mr. Seybold's answer for what it's worth -- an honest sounding, and somewhat surprised, reaction. We don't know what to take from this and perhaps we shouldn't read into it any further as there's nothing really left to go on. Then again, the image in question belongs to the UK store while Mr. Seybold is with SCEA ... hmm. Anyway, it is an interesting response to say the least. It is a very different answer to the usual robotic auto-reply "we do not comment on rumors and speculation."

There better be plans, otherwise WTF are u doing?
mike @ Jun 30th 2008 8:05PM
DAMN. that would have been cool.
RagingStormX @ Jun 30th 2008 8:11PM
If this were to be true, wouldn't that also mean that all those 40GB (aka non-PS2 compatible) PS3 will have to be updated to play them, via software emulation? Until Sony announces such of an update...I am calling this image BS.
MCX @ Jun 30th 2008 8:13PM
What that means is they don't wanna say yes right now.
crazypenguin @ Jun 30th 2008 8:17PM
as i've learned for a long time from dealing with rumors from sony, i will never condemn a rumor, believe in it 100 % is of course not possible either, but i'm not condemning it either. like the psp redesighn, i was absolutley sure like months before it happened, i said, no, sony wouldn't do that, not if people just bought some, no, that would be horrible, sony don't do it. and they responded to the rumor saying ,redesigning the psp is the furthest thing from our mind, blah blah blah, so yeah, not believing for a while. so far, most of the rumors i've heard, especially from this site, have been true...so why not, you know, not condemn them and say, this is total BS.
Shooter McGavin @ Jun 30th 2008 11:36PM
maybe he only said that to get the attention away from it
so it won't spread like wild fire
that way when the announce it at E3 (hopefuly) most people will be suprised in steed of like "wow like i didn't see it coming"
they would be more like, "WOW, OMFG I THINK I JUST SH!T MYSELF IN EXCITEMENT"
but one can only speculate
ahsayuninew @ Jun 30th 2008 8:47PM
How I would love to replay ssx3. Probably the best snowboarding game ever, imo
Bellerophon @ Jun 30th 2008 8:51PM
When you think about it, with all the PS3 SKUs out at the moment, some sporting BC others not, this is just a disaster waiting to happen. It's just not a feasible thing to do for the PS3. Sony would be immediately alienating all those who opted for a cheaper SKU at the expense of BC. Unless these games somehow run on the PS3 with some special trickery, I too call this image BS.
maxpontiac @ Jun 30th 2008 9:21PM
Interesting.
Sony denied the PS2 rumor quickly, but said nothing about 2.40...
Now we know what to expect...

@ Bellerophon
do you honesty believe sony has no plans to add bc to all ps3's at some point? lol. come on. any idiot can figure out that ps2 downloads is in the cards, and obviously it'd be available to all ps3's.
is it coming this summer? who knows. is it coming at some point? i'd say yes
Dwag @ Jun 30th 2008 9:37PM
Why would they they don't need to have it I mean at 90% of PS3 owners had a PS2 so why would I download them and alot of PS3s are b/c so no point really unless they like making money off games that most of there onwers probably own looking at you 360 xbox Originals come most of your owners had an xbox.
Dan @ Jul 1st 2008 10:59AM
A lot of ppl never had a PS2 to begin with though, and even if they did some probably don't have it anymore. My ps2 was one of the first models and is beat to a crap, I would definitely buy the PS2 games to store on the PS3 and play in upscaled HD goodness.
And you can bet a bunch of other ppl will too.
Pete @ Jun 30th 2008 9:41PM
SSX is one of the games listed there. SSX doesn't even work on the 80GB PS3. It crashes almost immediately. In fact, all of the SSX games crash on the 80GB PS3.
Tremada @ Jun 30th 2008 9:44PM
@ Bellerophon
So if the people who bought the cheaper PS3's that lacked backwards compatibility all of a sudden were able to play ps2 games, this would make them feel alienated? Are you an alien?
I don't know how large the ps2 game files are, but it is more than likely that ps2 games see the same treatment as ps1 games. It's a cash cow.
Popfrogs @ Jun 30th 2008 10:32PM
"but it is more than likely that ps2 games see the same treatment as ps1 games"
What, released by the dozens in Japan and barely available in the rest of the world? God I hope not. :)
Tremada @ Jun 30th 2008 10:48PM
Unfortunately, that would probably be true too :(
Dwag @ Jun 30th 2008 10:09PM
I doubt Sony is gonna release all PS3s with b/c cause even with software emulation it still cost money and Sony needs all the money they can get and releasing patches which cost money just get 40Gb PS3s to play PS2 games is dumb first and foremost I have a PS2 I can easily hook it up and done I can play all my PS2 games easy and plus whos gonna buy the PS2 games online when I can get them at stores(not gamestop I mean street stores) for no tax and ten bucks. It just doesn't make sense to do this cause it takes money to get this up and running and then people might not even buy the games.
Brett from Atlanta @ Jul 1st 2008 12:14AM
Ok, well heres how they get the money. Someone walks into a store looking to buy a ps2, but then they find out that all the ps3's are now backward compatible, have a steady library of ps3 games as well, and it is also and affordable blu ray player at the same time. Pretty convincing if you ask me. Dont you think that at some point, sony is gonna have to kill of the ps2. Then what, people who dont wanna shell out the cash for the higher prices ps3 sku have to hunt down a ps2? It'll happen sooner or later, we as the community just have to complain about it enough. See in game xmb complaints...
Barndo111 @ Jun 30th 2008 10:39PM
Actually, a pretty useful feature that I would like to see is being able to put the PS3 to sleep just like the PSP does. Am I the only one who thinks this would be a good idea? I always have to leave the house in the middle of a play session far away from a save point. Sure would be nice to have that ability.
Riley Freeman @ Jun 30th 2008 10:40PM
honestly it sounds like he didnt have a damn clue. like he was pissed off for being left out of the loop lol
Kevin @ Jun 30th 2008 11:16PM
Okay geniuses.
BC is not coming for the 40 GB.
Nor are the PS2 games.
For one thing PS2 games are Big A$$ files.
If they are good games, then a 40 GB can probably barely handle 3. How you gonna download those huge files.
Secondly imagine if you do get them.
How do you intend to run them.
It's not like the 40 GBs have the Emotion Engine, or the Software Emulation.
stargateheaven @ Jul 1st 2008 5:48AM
My computer doesn't have the emotion engine. Doesn't mean I can't run PS2 games on it.
And trust me, the PS3 is more powerful than my computer. My computer sucks. So sony can do this, my guess is just that they are earning too much money off of the PS2 right now, and as soon as that dies down, they'll emulate it as best they can on the PS3.
Kevin @ Jul 1st 2008 12:09PM
@stargateheaven
How do you run PS2 games on a PC?
Emulation is practially impossible for the PS2.
Unless you have a PS2 in your PC how do you do it?
Joe @ Jun 30th 2008 11:37PM
I do think in time PS2 game will be able to be downloaded. Just not right now. I do think Sony is working on the next great Firmware and may be in the next one will allow 40 gig PS3's to be able to play PS2 games plus be able to download games too. Because you have to think about it Sony has just gotten one of the biggest things people want out in this new firmware and so Sony knows they need to make the next one just as great if not better.
mixel @ Jun 30th 2008 11:48PM
Software emulation is *software based* - so, intrinsically addable whenever they want. Trivial for them to add it where necessary, considering they have a good core to work with already from the euro skus.
Shooter McGavin @ Jun 30th 2008 11:40PM
well in the original post of the rumor
someone pointed out that either the devs could recode the game to be in a ps3 compatibal format
or release an emulator in an update
and i think both a preatty plausable
but in my opinion emulator is the way to go
mixel @ Jun 30th 2008 11:51PM
Free, universal BC isnt coming, Sony have no good reason to do that as they know all the profitable titles will only be getting sold *preowned* - they make no money from that.
I'd put money on classic PS2 titles being on the PSN, probably within the year.
It IS going to happen. 10 year plan, remember? Software emulation works fine on the 60GB euro SKUS that use it, it just needs tweaking for some games.
Selling PS2 games is an extra revenue stream that Sony aren't going to ignore. People will choose to buy classic and platinum PS2 games on PSN over going to the shop like they are with the PSP games. I'd sure as hell rather keep things on HD to save disc swapping.
Anyone who thinks they "won't fit" is being crazy too, there aren't many multi-disc PS2 games! The 360 already lets you DL Xbox games..
stargateheaven @ Jul 1st 2008 5:50AM
Yeah, people are using the excuse that "40gb is not big enough" for a few games.. they are only like 4gb each. Not only that, but why not just get a bigger HDD. Look at the 360, there xbox one games are around 2gb (?), yet some 360s dont even HAVE a HDD.
Organic_Shadow @ Jul 1st 2008 2:30AM
[Someone please go dig up scans of their powerpoint presentations clearly showing their intent to put PS2 content up on the PlayStation Store prior to the PS3 being released]
Obviously you guys DO have plans, and have been trying to cook up some software emulation so that you can hurry up and catch up to the Xbox originals thing. You guys had the downloadable PS1/PS2 thing all ready to go but never got down to the software emulation part, so just make it happen. Stop dodging the question or making excuses. E3 announcement? Fine, but seriously, we're tired of the PROOF (see 2.40 leaks) and typical denial.
Richard @ Jul 1st 2008 6:45AM
I'm pretty sure sony had talked about doing this earlier this year.
OddyOh @ Jul 1st 2008 8:20AM
Sony says no = yes, just wait patiently.
