Unlocking a trophy will trigger a sound alert after all
Good grief. We received more tips about this than any other aspect of firmware 2.40, including yesterday's walkthrough videos. We'll take that to mean that many of you guys are as pleased as we are to hear that not only will unlocking a trophy bring up a visual notification in the top right hand corner of the screen, but an aural alert will also play. This has been confirmed by an update to the FAQ on the PlayStation Blog.
This completes the trophy experience and considerably lowers the chances of us missing a trophy notification when we're particularly engrossed in a game. The question is, what does it sound like? We'll find out tomorrow when the firmware goes live.

Thats a load off my mind.
stargateheaven @ Jul 1st 2008 5:17AM
I hope it's good. AND satisfying.
I'd like a sound for signing in and out, and friends signing in and out, and alerts too.
sounds for all the notifications would be good. But i'd like different ones per message, unlike 360.
Brodie-san @ Jul 1st 2008 5:27AM
If you read the FAQ (sounds denied and then updated quickly to say it's included) it sounds like there was no "chime" included in the release and, after the question was made, someone had a chat with a developer and it was added as a last minute "feature."
Of course this might not be true. One would hope that the Release Candidate for 2.40 was locked down some weeks ago and they've only been checking in bug fixes up until now but who knows what those crazy loons over at Sony are up to.
Either that, or a developer read the FAQ and immediately ran his boss: "That moron said there's no sound! What have I been working my ass off on for the last two weeks!?! Trophy sounds baby!"
:)

I don't really bother, but the functionality has been there a long time, for playing a sound trough the XMB on a certain event, like this "new Trophy" event.
I bet Sony was just choosing between sound file proposals made by their employees.
If we only can get a new section in the XMB -> settings menu for changing notification sounds and what display messages to show I would love Sony _even more_.
XMB / Settings / Notification messages
# Download + installation complete
# Friends comes online + offline
# Trophy gained (different depending on type of Trophy perhaps)
# PSN, Singed in + out
All events abouve with 3 options each:
* Placement of the display box; topleft, top, topright, left, right, bottomleft, bottom, bottomright...
* Display icon: Yes, No
* Sound alerts: [off], [default: use the theme's notification sound], [Sony's original notification sound]
DALR @ Jul 1st 2008 5:28AM
It'd be awesome if we could put custom sound alerts!
Jem @ Jul 1st 2008 5:29AM
I would, without a doubt, have the Final Fantasy victory fanfare.
Kris @ Jul 1st 2008 8:13AM
agreed on the final fantasy fanfare!
that or the mgs alert sound, depending on if i wanted to make myself jump.
GridloQ @ Jul 1st 2008 5:41AM
Great, I can't wait to turn off ALL trophy indicators so as to NOT be pulled out of my video game experience.
Rowdehaj @ Jul 1st 2008 6:00AM
Downranking sequence engaged...
Gonzo @ Jul 1st 2008 9:59AM
Thank You!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who isn't getting all excited about the ps3 copying the 360's most useless feature. I have enough problems NOT throwing the controller at the screen when we get a notice of every single little thing that's happening in the background of the system. It's bad enough programmers feel the need to put quicktimeevents in every new game, now we're going to have more crap flashing on the screen and pinging out of the speakers?
It seems that lately, every bit of ps3 news is about these trophies which I really couldn't give a crap about to begin with. If I wanted to get arbitrary and completely valueless points for doing stuff I would probably end up doing anyway (if the game is any good), I would've gotten a 360. Well... I still wouldn't get a 360 but I still don't understand why they're ripping off it's most worthless feature.
Nachkebia @ Jul 1st 2008 5:44AM
Trophy`s and leveling up is absolutly great but would be even greater to invite and join friends while playing online :)
Rowdehaj @ Jul 1st 2008 6:01AM
Baby steps... Don't worry.
libertine @ Jul 1st 2008 6:21AM
Anyone know what the game is on the picture?
I sure dont recognise it
possible new release?
Syn @ Jul 1st 2008 6:56AM
Wow... One of the things I disliked about 360 is coming to PS3. Goddamn Trophies.
Oh well. I suppose kids will enjoy, earning levels based on how much of a 'Gamer' they are... lol
b-way @ Jul 1st 2008 7:40AM
The game is Super Stardust HD.
Fiddlesworth @ Jul 1st 2008 8:24AM
Super Stardust HD uses fictional planet names and trophies like 'New Star Found - Find a star that has not been seen by anyone and then name it' and 'Spacewalk Mission' have no relevance to SSHD's gameplay.
SimplyB @ Jul 1st 2008 9:00AM
Does anyone know if you have to delete your old save file for the games and start new. Or can you just start a new game, and over wright your old save file?
Trapper @ Jul 1st 2008 9:15AM
good question, i would like to know this too, anyone?
drdre74 @ Jul 1st 2008 9:13AM
I heard the sound effect is Samuel Jackson yelling, " Look muthaf**ka you got a new Trophy."
Devin @ Jul 1st 2008 12:12PM
"Trophy muthafu**er!"
R_Shackelford @ Jul 7th 2008 12:56AM
Hopefully you'll be able to put in your own sounds via the theme editor.
xFenixKnightx @ Jul 1st 2008 9:14AM
YES! This is what I was hoping for yesterday. I can't wait to hear it!!! :)
Nathan-DTS @ Jul 4th 2008 11:17AM
this is the 1st time I have read your comments without them mentioning how disgusted at your decision to buy a PS3.
Tim Parsons @ Jul 1st 2008 10:03AM
Cool Cool
R.I.P XBL

Well, the trophies aren't completely useless. I read that Sony will be releasing the PS Edge which attributes certain points per trophy which you can later use to get free stuff from PS Store.
This is something you can't do with XBL achievements.
John S @ Jul 1st 2008 12:07PM
Where did you read that?
Dwag @ Jul 1st 2008 12:48PM
XBL gives you free stuff for getting achievements mostly trashy stuff but still they do it. I highly ddoubt that free PS store stuff is gonna be anything different.
Wnen did this whole Trophies Vs Achievements thing started? they are both just a way to get gamers to get back into a game after the first playthrough and continue playing.
Phil1017 @ Jul 1st 2008 11:45AM
It's good...but i am deaf. i can't hear the sound alert. they should add a subtitle alert.
Gonzo @ Jul 1st 2008 11:46AM
Emmisark-
I'll believe that when I see it.
Sony doesn't give away anything for free. Remember the Chains of Olympus demos? Once they got the response they did, hardly anyone got the demo for free. You had to preorder the game to get it.
John S @ Jul 1st 2008 12:09PM
A bunch of people got it for free, including me.
Gonzo @ Jul 1st 2008 3:02PM
Well than you're part of the special small fraction who did aren't you?
Personally,
I don't know anyone who actually had it delivered to them even though I and a few friends got the heads up that the UMDs would arrive soon. They just never arrived.
The point: I don't believe Sony when they say we're going to get something for free.
hotteengirlwithdildo @ Jul 1st 2008 11:48AM
What are trophies? I mean, in games. Are they really just stupid symbols indicating to strangers online that you're pretty good at a particular game?
deaftly @ Jul 1st 2008 12:22PM
The fanboys will prob vote you down but well said.
Devin @ Jul 1st 2008 12:32PM
360's achievements are no better than PS3's trophies and PS3's trophies are no better than 360's achievements. It depends on whether you like an overall gamerscore that shows your "skill" as a gamer, or whether it's based on a leveling structure.
I personally like the different skill levels of trophies that can apply towards your overall skill "level" vs. an arbitrary gamer score where all points are treated the same...I mean think about it: 1000 gamer points on Guitar Hero would take you FOREVER to get, but on games like PimpMyRide, you could get 1000 in seriously one play through; it's ridiculous IMO.
Devin @ Jul 1st 2008 12:55PM
I forgot to say that with the trophies, measly or 'anyone can earn' trophies such as the bronze ones, will only add slightly to your overall level, but the Gold/Platinum, or in other words 'the hard to obtain/only skilled gamers can earn' ones will help to increase your level tremendously.
Also, if Sony copied them, what other way could they have done it differently?
YoungJey @ Jul 1st 2008 3:40PM
wat i wan to know is if you will automatically unlock the trophies for the games that you've already play and met the requirements for the trophie unlocking, as soon as the update is up, or if you'll have to unlock every trophies that you could have already unlockd, agian. and thats all wanted to know and i hope i get my question answered ... and thans for keeping us updated everyday guys :D
Damo @ Aug 3rd 2008 7:22AM
