Eric Lempel talks more about 2.40 and PSN's 'leap forward'
Surely most of you have downloaded firmware version 2.40 and have been avidly collecting trophies on Super Stardust HD like us. But why did it take so long to get this stuff? Why are some things still missing? Eric Lempel spoke with Next-Gen on just that and we'll summarize the answers to those questions, since you've probably heard enough about what 2.40 does.To start, Lempel says "some of the [features of 2.40] people have been requesting for some time, some of them are a bit newer. We have a roadmap and there were a lot of other things on the roadmap that we had to deliver prior to these features." They won't release features until they are completely ready and have developer support and interest behind them -- this may be implying that it's difficult to get developers on board for custom soundtracks (the ability is already on the PS3 and it's up to developers to support it). Cross-game invites are also on this 'roadmap' for the future.
He promised gamers that the PlayStation Network will remain free, stating that it's "nice for consumers who want to try out the online experience, those who may be new to it and may not be ready to commit to spending dollars, and that's a really good message for us. Being free also gives them the opportunity to spend the money that they may have spent on a subscription on online items or online games instead." He also says that he'd like to see more games on the PS Store -- like PS One titles. Whether or not these things will come in the next few months is anyone's guess ... but for now, we're pretty happy with the direction the PS3 is taking.

Yea, too bad you can't download the update.
rjhubs @ Jul 2nd 2008 7:28PM
I looked around, no one else posted this link. Kotaku has the story.. http://kotaku.com/5021458/ps3-240-update-problems-and-solutions
Itchy @ Jul 2nd 2008 8:09PM
Thanks for that link rjhubs. I'm one whose had 2.40 problems and PS3 Fanboy has certainly let me down by not covering the issue. It's like, "Move along, nothing to see here." I think I'm done with this site. Posters such as you have done more to help me out than PS3 Fanboy itself.
nxtiak @ Jul 3rd 2008 12:50AM
Two postings below this story is about Sony pulling the 2.40 update. It was posted at 4pm. Your comment about Not being able to d/l the update is at 6pm and blaming PS3 Fanboy for not posting about it at 8pm.
-.- @ Jul 2nd 2008 6:09PM
MARVEL VS CAPCOM PLZ.
For ps1
:D
George @ Jul 2nd 2008 6:08PM
Well, it would be nice if the update was actually, you know, AVAILABLE...
Sorry for the obligatory comment, but, seriously, you'd think Sony would iron out the bugs before releasing for once.
2.40 FTW

Just put Metal Gear Solid for one of the PS One titles and I'll be happy!
nedal @ Jul 2nd 2008 7:13PM
whats ure psn id so we could compare stardust trophies mine is wutangpro29 ive got about ten trophies tooo
Josh @ Jul 2nd 2008 7:23PM
My PSN user name is Fade2blac (feel free to add me everyone, the more the merrier) and in a couple of hours I'm having a friend over to help me get that co-op trophy! How in the world is it possible to get the 15 bombs in Bomber? That trophy is kicking my butt!!! Any tips?!
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Jul 2nd 2008 7:28PM
Stay with the bomb carts, avoid everything else, only use a bomb when you'll be getting two in return. Do it five times and you've got your trophy.
Haven't done the co-op one, but this is the hardest trophy I've come across- kinda sad that it's a silver while 10x on Arcade (piece of cake) is a gold.
wem003 @ Jul 2nd 2008 6:11PM
Mine worked fine and its awesome - but guess they should have taken a little longer with it....
Josh @ Jul 2nd 2008 6:19PM
Same here. I downloaded 2.40 last night around 11:45pm and I played and earned 10 trophies on Super Stardust till about 4:30am!! No problems whatsoever, I love the new update!!
TennisPro77 @ Jul 2nd 2008 6:17PM
I got mine at 11:55 on the 1st and mine works fine.
the_culture @ Jul 2nd 2008 6:15PM
If their having this many problems with the 2.4 firmware release, I can't imagine what the Home release will be like. :)
papertiger201 @ Jul 2nd 2008 6:30PM
Home is bound to be buggy when they release it, hence why they're going the Google route and releasing it as an open Beta once they finally do get it out to the general public.
gamingeek @ Jul 2nd 2008 6:27PM
Must have PS1 titles:
FF VII-IX, Anthology, Chronicles, Origins, & Tactics
Xenogears
Persona 1 & 2
Vagrant Story
Chrono Cross
Parasite Eve 1 & 2
Legend of Dragoon
Metal Gear Solid
MGS: VR Missions
Resident Evil 1-3
There are so many great PS1 titles that NEED to be in the PSN store. Enough excuses Sony. Get your lawyers to take care of the licensing issues and get this stuff out to us PS fans now!
Da @ Jul 2nd 2008 6:51PM
Yeah, remind people the kind of quality games that are only avaliable only on Playstation, and that Playstation was pushing the boundries before xbox was even a concept.
creyes4182 @ Jul 3rd 2008 9:29AM
Only problem I noticed was that sometimes the gamer cards give an error message. Other then that its an awesome update.
realjuancho @ Jul 2nd 2008 7:00PM
why doesn't anybody adress the issue of the store not being worldwide? i cant wait to spend my choco-llars in any of the stuff they have in there
Coffin Hunter @ Jul 3rd 2008 7:51PM
Just wait till they patch this and all of you loose the "trophies", (god that sounds lame), you have gotten once they patch it with the real update. I think its come to the point that these companies send out software with intentional bugs and issues to stir up the media and people to get awareness.... Teh Internets is a fire with meatheads...
maroofh @ Jul 2nd 2008 6:58PM
I got mine this morning. Seems to be ok so far however in-game xmb is sloooow nd i got signed out of psn randomly a few tyms. But still kl to send msgs ingame even tho i get kild in battlefield

I'd give you mine if you promise to use some punctuation if you ever contact me.
HektikLyfe @ Jul 2nd 2008 7:17PM
Why would they permit cross game invites? Wouldn't that be equivalent to shooting themselves in the foot?
They are paying so much to develop HOME so advertisers can bombard our senses with ads and products before we invite our friends to play a game on this "free" service.
nedal @ Jul 2nd 2008 8:45PM
no thannks ill pass
Dwag @ Jul 2nd 2008 7:36PM
They aren't gonna add cross game invites they'll leave it up to the devs cause the devs knows best which is true that make the games so they decide what features of the In game Xmb get in the games.
Sony met us most the way but until they release the chosen gam of this Console generation FFXIII
then this is what happens to 360:Oh Noes they just drop a nuke theres no recovery we should just surrender.
HektikLyfe @ Jul 2nd 2008 7:48PM
The 360 doesn't have much to fear just yet. Sony is getting closer...but its not quite there yet.
I don't think individual developers have much of anything to do with cross-game invites. The XMB is part of the OS. So if they were to include it in their game you can send invites and see what games they are playing only in certain games?
That doesn't make much sense. It would require loads of redundant data. Each game would have to have a complete inventory of every game released after its own release.
It would be much more efficient of Sony did it which I have faith they will.
Eventually.
