Sony acknowledges firmware 2.40 problems
As reported earlier, firmware 2.40 has been taken down. Playstation.Blog has a post acknowledging problems with their latest firmware and assures us that it's only temporary. A commenter concerned about those who have 2.40 installed already was met with a response of "we've received no reports of hardware issues following a successful install," so those of you who have already installed the firmware have nothing to worry about. Stay with us as more information is available.

My PS3 its running smoothly without any issue en on in-game testing the XMB and sending message after a long session of Team Fortress 2.
JamesL007 @ Jul 2nd 2008 8:46PM
I been saying this for a while now, if you did a successful install you are fine.
Bricking happens when the new firmware is first being installed / loaded. If you survive it you are fine.
RSly @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:24PM
Um no. No ones systems are bricking - the problems arent with the firmware being properly installed and having hardware issues. Its all software issues and there are plenty of people having problems right now. Hence Sony pulling it from download
Tom @ Jul 2nd 2008 8:46PM
Phew. That's good news. I haven't turned mine on since I heard about the problems.
squakmginer @ Jul 2nd 2008 8:52PM
My 2.40 works fine. Only GTA freezes which is normal. My question is...
Where is that music player utility displayed in this picture??? I don't get that even just in XMB, not in-game.
UnReAl_SiKaRiO @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:28AM
If you have music in ur ps3 and the game support it you just need to go to music and select the track u wanna play and when its playing it will display.
Charles @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:34AM
Choose a song you want to play and the mini-player will come in, then you can press O to toggle it on/off.

mrtn @ Jul 2nd 2008 8:57PM
why does in game XMB look smoother in the preview than in action at home?
stargateheaven @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:09PM
it is smooth depending on the game. its smooth for me on super star dust, but not on mgs4.
Nick @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:46PM
I bet the PS3s they use for showing new things have hard disk drivers with higher RPMs and size capacities. If your HDD has a higher RPM than the one that comes with the PS3 your content will load faster.
Scott(Smallville123) @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:00PM
It depends on the game. For example a graphic heavy game like gta there is a slight lag with the in game xmb. However i fired up flow and the in game runs smooth.
Didier Ortiz @ Jul 2nd 2008 8:57PM
mine works fine and some of these trophies r a bit hard to get.
Didier Ortiz @ Jul 2nd 2008 8:59PM
is in the top, pic a song, go out to music menu and go to the top

"those of you who have already installed the firmware have nothing to worry about."
I was wondering about that. Good to know.
@ Everyone saying they're not having problems: Uhm, ok?
shooter_mcgavin @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:17PM
the download is accessable from the website
but when you install it it says you already have the latest version
Noshino @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:55PM
for what its worth, thr "massive bricking" matter was posted by Kotaku, whom pulled the information from the PS forums....and thing is, only a few people had reported this problem...
Since then, the issue blew out of proportion, and Sony, in a smart move, pulled the firmware update from the net for further testing
OAKside @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:56PM
"@ Everyone saying they're not having problems: Uhm, ok?"
When people read complaint after complaint, they tend to think virtually everyone is affected and the problem is worse than it is. Many times that's not the case, so posting "No problem" does actually serve a cause.
I installed 2.40 with this morning, and have played BFBC throughout the day. No problems that I've noticed.
That said, this is indeed a dark day for Sony and the PlayStation. Firmware 2.40 was a HUGE update that was anticipated and hyped for months, but instead of finally delivering, Sony released a disaster and the negativity has spread like wildfire.
NATO_Duke @ Jul 3rd 2008 3:05PM
Noshino, c'mon man. Do you seriously believe that? Do you read the PS3 forums? There is a problem, hence the install file being taken down.
How is it that Sony can admit a problem exists, but some of their users cannot? My game saves appear to be wiped out. Whether you have a problem or not - it exists.
beno_1990 @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:17PM
In game xmb lags heaps on my ps3, and i cant get mgs4 to play anymore :(
cannedleech @ Jul 3rd 2008 12:48PM
Damn, I got this same problem last night. I started playing MGS4 on The Boss mode, and when i pulled up a menu it just froze up. I can't even get the game to start anymore
Twinturbo120 @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:20PM
o shweeet i have nothing to worry about =D
jake18oly @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:20PM
Good, I am glad that I successfully installed the update last night. I haven't seen any issues at all either.
RSGHANA @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:25PM
My XMB froze on me mid-game, after sending a message.
Superbean @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:28PM

I installed it using the option on the ps3. Since I have used the xmb to switch between movies and launch the Rock Band, which I played for 3 or 4 hours without problems.
ps360jonesy @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:45PM
yep my ps3 keeps restarting over and over when i try to play a psn title and then the system stops working altogether... bricked ps3 ftl....
dead @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:47PM
mine installed fine, but right after the install, for some reason it didnt recognze that the sounds from my ps3 is hooked up via hdmi to a receiver, so i had no sounds. it was resolved when i reset my receiver though, so other than that, no probs.
Dwag @ Jul 2nd 2008 9:50PM
Still is that thing like a virus cause I left my PS3 alone after installing?
DHDrew @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:00PM
I used a USB drive to put it on my PS3. It installed just fine!!!In fact I still have the 2.40 firmware update on my drive :)
TheRockBoS @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:35PM
Same here. I got no issues after updating to 2.40 and have been trying to earn tropies in SSHD all day.
snowman @ Jul 2nd 2008 10:48PM
I have a 40 gig model that had the hard drive replaced to a 60 gig a few months back. After I did the update and it rebooted I got a warning saying "incorrect hard drive found" and then stopped. I freaked. I crossed my fingers, turned it off and flipped the switch on the back for a few minutes, and then turned it back on and all was fine. I feel like I dodged a bullet.
Edwin @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:15PM
Can somebody tell me how something like this can happen? This update has been in the works for a long time and when they release it it just f--ks some peoples PS3?
I'm glad i didn't have a problem with my update, but the Sony engineers should test the firmware more and with very version of the PS3, like the 60GB, 40GB, etc.
Releasing a firmware update can be super dangerous, imagine if they release a firmware update that then causes the PS3 not to turn on? They can lose billions of dollars, so next time Sony, don't release a firmware if its not ready.
Sony is a great company but sometimes they do things that just makes me fucking wonder what the hell they were thinking.
Octantis @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:59AM
I can understand where you are coming from, but from an IT perspective it is impossible to guarantee 100% success. The reason being there are too many variables to test for. How many major different versions of the ps3 are there? How many minor versions are there? How many different batches of firmware chips are there? Now run every possible combination of those variables then multiply by 1000 for get a decent cross section for testing. So give Sony and MS a break when a small % has bricking trouble. It's not like they aren't testing, they just can't test everything.

witch games work whit in game music?
nhl 08? all i get is that isent supported?
Andy @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:49PM
I'm glad they took the update off.
I installed 2.10 (via usb) when it came out and it ruined ps3 game playback on my 60g launch (ps/ps2/blu-ray movie worked fine).
How to fix a problem with new ps3 firmware?
Not a sony patch, but a $150 hardware replacement.
I'll wait a week before installing any new firmware update so I don't have to install another $150 firmware update.
(I hate Xbox but at least Microsoft compensates you when they know they fucked up)
McDuck @ Jul 3rd 2008 12:02AM
Same here. My 60GB launch PS3 (aka the best PS3) got bricked by this update, and I feel burned to say the least. You'll never see me playing firmware test bitch again.
jayj @ Jul 2nd 2008 11:54PM
mine showed a black screen forever when i first tried to boot up SuperStardust HD the first time after installing the firmware. After that it's been ok.
Tim Parsons @ Jul 3rd 2008 12:02AM
