Trophy timestamps are 'translated' when comparing with friends

Click for higher resolution
Trophies brought with them a level of competitiveness that hasn't been available on the PS3 before today. That's why we're certain that some of you are going to be ferociously comparing your trophies with your pals'. Each trophy is timestamped with the exact minute that you obtained it, so even if you and your friends have exactly the same number, you can see who got each one first.
But what happens when your friend lives in a different timezone? Thankfully, this is not an issue. All times are converted over to your timezone whenever you compare trophies with anyone on your friends list. You can clearly see this in the high resolution version of the image above. Despite Jeff being 8 hours behind, the time still states that we got our hands on the trophy before him. Not that we're bragging, or anything.

Great... writes about 15 emails to infinity ward... gimme trophies!!!
Popfrogs @ Jul 2nd 2008 2:42PM
They won't give us rumble, what makes you think they'll give us trophies? IW = lazy.
tretle @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:20PM
I cant believe the ignorance of some people on the blog complaining that they cant get trophies for all games straight away and that in game music doesn't work for games straight away.
If they just had the custom music played without linking it to the game(no patches necessary) you would end up in a situation where you are playing a game and a cutseen comes up and you would have to manually pause the custom music etc.
The reason we dont have 100% compatability yet is because the developers didnt have the new api's 2.40 introduces before 2.40 unlike the 360.
Ether02 @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:39PM
QFT, I can't believe how unlogical gamers now days are anyone with half a brain can realize that b/c sony didn't have this feature when the PlayStation launch many developers will have to add the music feature in a future patch and not all games will be supported. Also, I'm surprised how popular this feature really is to gamers b/c I would rarely use it due to the fact that I like most soundtracks that comes with the games.
Mo @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:51PM
im from america, where we are constantly reminded of how dumb and lazy, not to mention whiney people can be.
HAAS599 @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:01PM
in-game music shouldn't have to be patched into games.
did you see the demo vid?
did PixelJunk create a patch for Monsters just for the video?
I believe Sony could allow in-game music for all games but dont do it because they are going to let the developer decide if the want that feature in their game or not.
I think the patch is just a line of code that unlocks the feature.
Rowdehaj @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:26PM
"did PixelJunk create a patch for Monsters just for the video?"
Yes, I think that was a working prototype, and he may have steered around any serious bugs that might still be in it.
HAAS599 @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:40PM
I look forward to seeing that patch this thursday then
tretle @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:50PM
So you would prefer to have cutseens and important story progression (character dialog etc) muffled by your custom music? I think its done with patches so that the game can actually control the volume of the custom soundtrack as if it were the soundtrack included with the game. Doing it this way is much better in the long run. Developers will definitely include custom soundtracks in future games because if they don't then the people on playstation blog would bitch and moan at them.
ambe @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:43PM
HAAS559 - "I think the patch is just a line of code that unlocks the feature.".
You would think wrong. This kind of ignorance is really annoying. You think every games sound engine is the same and that to integrate it with the PS3's firmware is that simple. I'm sure if gamers had any idea about programming or games development they would be far more appreciative of what they get!
HAAS599 @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:58PM
in-game xmb has nothing to do with any game.
sony could allow you to play a song through in-game xmb on any game if they wanted.
All the devloper needs to do is put a setting in the sound options to turn off in-game music. Many if not all games already have this. If a game didnt have this feature then the two tracks would play together.
Pixeljunk did not make a patch for their game, just so you know. What you saw in the demo vid is a special beta firmware on the PS3 with the feature fully unlocked. Sony decided not to fully unlock it but to leave it up to the developer whether or not that want that feature in their game. This has always been the case. Access to music on the hard drive while in game has always been available to develops for over a year(i think).
Simply put Sony puts the developer above the user on this issue.
tonyt3rry @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:22PM
Iw wont be adding triphies to the game if they wont evan add a little bit of code to add rumble to the game
Danger @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:22PM
C'mon Infinity Ward, Rockstar, and Konami! Patch those games with the quickness already!
Kevin @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:26PM
Well none of my friends have SSHD so I'm good right now.

macserv @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:30PM
I'd be willing to bet trophy times are stored on the server in UTC, and then converted to local time on everyone's box.
maxpontiac @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:33PM
Great, now patch my games so I can get Trophy collecting..
Brodie-san @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:44PM
What games do you have O Great Omnipotent Master and we'll get right on it !
;)
Seriously, people need to relax. Retroactive Trophy Proliferation (RTP)* is going to take some time. Especially in 3rd party games.
I'm just wondering how 2.40 is going to affect games that are already rocketing towards their upcoming release dates. Do you release it anyway and patch with trophies in the coming weeks or do you hold it for a while and launch with the new fandangled trophies?
Hmm ...
*j/k
reson8er @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:50PM
lol, RTP©
koehler83 @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:56PM
If you get stuck at the XMB wave, you need to format your HDD in another system or in a PC.
You will lose your Save Data, but that is a foregone conclusion now.
On the bright side, as of this firmware update, archived save data is pretty much worthless. You'll have to go back and play those games anyway. It will screw up any games you're currently playing though.. sorry.
In any case, you can fix it yourself without sending it out.
Martin Kompas @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:40PM
awesome! if only my PS3 would work. after the firmware update all i get to see is the white wave, no xmb, and even my controllers aren't recognized. apparently not a reported problem when you call sony. but considering the amount of people with this issue on the playstation forums, they should report it.
Jonathan Coole @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:50PM
idk about any more 2.4 honestly, its the biggest disappointment ever, thanks again sony for doing practically nothing, lying, and half assing everything. but hey, still better then xbox.... but that isn't really saying much.
stargateheaven @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:36PM
what exactly have they lied about?
Reckoning @ Jul 2nd 2008 12:54PM

wow. so they set up a huge trophie system and the ability to have ingame music but no games support it. wtf was the point?
macserv @ Jul 2nd 2008 1:34PM
New games will support it, especially multi-console titles. Older games can be (and have already been) patched to add support.
Popfrogs @ Jul 2nd 2008 2:43PM
Sony doesn't have any control over third parties, that's why they only listed upcoming support for first party titles.
