Upcoming peripheral takes inspiration from Wii Zapper
Rumors about a Wii-like PS3 controller surfaced in early June when details about a supposed secret focus group testing were leaked. Heading back into the rumor mill, we found a startling discovery over on JustPlay -- a videogame peripheral manufacturer and supplier. On the website, a listing for a "PS3 2.4 GHz Wireless Handgun" quite possibly shows us what this rumored PSThrii-mote will look like and its intended use.
While the picture does suggest that peripheral is being made for such a device, there isn't a guarantee that such a device does indeed exist. It could very well be a mock-up for ideas being played around with. We'll continue to chalk this one up as rumor for now. In the meantime, we'll keep our eyes out for more. Most likely, if there is anything out there regarding a PSThrii-mote, we will be seeing it at this month's E3.

Mock-up if you ask me. It looks to cheap to be real.
Lars @ Jul 7th 2008 3:59PM
I agree, actually I think the giveaway is that it looks like something from home-gaming in the late 70's.

And doesn't Ninty hold the patent for that type of D-pad? I always heard that was why Sony had to use the non-connected D-pads.

There's the giveaway that it's not an real product right there: it looks too much like a real gun.
Speaking of which, isn't it ridiculous how we have to dance around the subject of gun peripherals while games featuring guns are aplenty? Anybody remember how ridiculous it was playing Lethal Enforcers with a Super Scope bazooka?
Foolish @ Jul 7th 2008 1:49PM
Looks like they took inspiration from the Vii

tojfs7931 @ Jul 8th 2008 6:40AM
They already have a wii like remote- its called sixaxis.
Rowdehaj @ Jul 7th 2008 2:52PM
Good Lord I hope that's not it.
uh-oh polio @ Jul 7th 2008 2:57PM
Id rather have a model of an m-4 with a detachable magazine extra pistol wireless motion sensing remote for cod4, maybe a foot pedal to move and id buy it.
chrisnick @ Jul 8th 2008 12:35AM
if thats how it looks....ill use it..........................................................to shoot myself.
Mattchewie @ Jul 7th 2008 3:05PM
Yeah I don't like the "mote" but the gun looks cool. I think I spy a button or sensor on the bottom which leads me to think you would wave or hit your hand on the bottom to simulate loading a clip for reloading :>
tristan88 @ Jul 7th 2008 3:12PM
definitely not real. its discustingly ugly and looks like its from the 80s. also on just play it says uses 2 AAA batteries which i highly doubt sony would use when there other controllers have built in rechargeable batteries.
Lucy @ Jul 7th 2008 3:49PM
so let me get this straight. gamers called the wii-mote a "motion control gimmick" and they said that the wii itself, isn't a next-gen console, because it doesn't display hd-graphics.
but now that sony has their own wii-like motion controller coming out. now it's ok to like motion controls? and since the ps3 can display hd-graphics, it's even more ok to like motion controls? i don't get it. this is reason why i don't like videogames as much i did before. there's too immaturity amongst gamers. the whole fan-boy thing is immature and it get way out of hand. but that's just my opinion.
videogames aren't about having fun anymore. those days are long gone it seems. gamers only care about, exclusives, hd graphics, sale numbers, etc, etc. i miss the old days of gaming. anyway, i got way off track. sorry.
Mo @ Jul 7th 2008 4:02PM
sorry if this post seems just dumb...
but ive owned a ps3 pretty much since launch, and i just recently got to get upclose and investigate the wii
and uhm...
to me at least, it so very obviously sucks. hard to look at, the menus even seemed lame. The games are okay at best.
this is my opinion, and not intended to be flamebait. just venting i suppose
dont see what all the fuss is about
/me hugs his ps3
bknoob @ Jul 7th 2008 4:04PM
why can't you like games for whatever reasons YOU like them? who cares what everybody else likes.
Lars @ Jul 7th 2008 4:08PM
First of all, you're generalizing separate groups of gamers into one self-opposing one. Secondly, the PS3 has always had motion control, this gun or stick thing doesn't add anything except IR... which I'm really happy about. The most innovative feature I think the Wii has brought to the table is the IR. I have a PS3 and a Wii... they're really very different systems and can each be enjoyed for their strong points. It's just extreme 360 fanboys that are always knocking motion control, mostly.
If you're only seeing the negative aspect of this generation's consoles, then you're reading way too many forum posts. For some reason people love to focus on the negatives in internet forums.
Gonzo @ Jul 8th 2008 12:34PM
I seem to understand what your saying.
It's not so much about the games anymore as it is the corporate competition. I'm just amazed that so many gamers fall for it.
It's like the politicians trying to pull people to the right side or the left side when neither side has integrity or any sort of concern for the people voting for them. They just want everyone to know that their side is great and the other side is crap.
Knight-Zero @ Jul 7th 2008 4:13PM
Well, it doesn't look like a mock up to me. There seems to even be button on the butt of the gun. I can't wait for these.
Wrathbringer @ Jul 7th 2008 5:02PM
I'd be excited for it IF the damned Wii had decent games to port.
Actually I'd hate this thing even with decent ports, The Wii really is a gimmick and that's the reason I don't own one. Here's something of Sony's that I WON'T be buying, if it's true of course.
Daniel @ Jul 7th 2008 7:12PM
To me it seems like a 3rd party peripheral. The way this is listed, it looks like you would get the remote and the gun when you buy it and it would either work off the Sixaxis connection or a wireless sensor bar.
Read the details from the source, sounds like a 3rd party thing to me:
--- Compatible with PS3 console
--- Supports all PS3 gun fighting games
--- Supports multi-loop signals without any interference for many
players playing simultaneously
--- Force signal connect
--- Combines PS3 controller with gun stand for enhancing the operation
--- Can be easily dismantled to use as PS3 wireless controller
--- 2 x AAA alkaline batteries can provide at least 10 hours power continuously
--- Working distance is up to 10m
--- Auto scan function between the gun and receiver

You think that is bad I didnt even have that. Me and my brother had to play it enough to memorize were everyone was at so we just put the crossair were they would pop out because we only had regular contollers.
