Looks like the software engineers at Sony have finished tweaking firmware 2.40. The much-anticipated firmware update included
crucial features, like in-game XMB and trophies, but was
pulled shortly after its release due to reports of
bricked systems. Now, a few days after the controversial removal of firmware 2.40 from Sony's servers, firmware 2.41 is now available to download worldwide.
Hopefully, all goes smoothly with this update. Those lucky enough to have 2.40 working on their systems know that in-game XMB works incredibly well, and trophy support is absolutely addictive. Now, PS3 owners en masse will be able to enjoy these features.
[Thanks, Seth C.!]

It popped up in the middle of watching "The Fifth Element" bluray and told me to update... very odd...

Stupid message posting by email confirmation type system... I always screw it up.
Fine you win...

ya know you can blame that all you want........but if you just setup an account you can use the same password all the time and avoid the confirmation email..........lol

no, you both lose for tying your sense of self-worth to who posted first about a firmware update.
Ptrack_Git @ Jul 9th 2008 1:55AM
@Mojo Yugen... do you feel important wrecking my fun for no good reason?

Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Jul 8th 2008 3:20AM
Incredibly well, my foot. The icons for the XMB and Trophies take way too long to load. I'm hoping this is cleared up once everyone's updated.
reson8er @ Jul 8th 2008 9:42AM
Its not unusual Tez, the 360 has lag as well when you access the in game blade or w/e its called. It would be nice if they could make it more efficient though.
Ayrkain @ Jul 8th 2008 3:27AM
Is the auto-shutdown when done d/ling option new?
Dustin @ Jul 8th 2008 3:28AM
Well, people got what they wanted, an option to turn off ps3 when down updating. that comes up after you accept the EULA. I didnt have any problems, but as long as Sony fixed it!
Gambit07 @ Jul 8th 2008 3:29AM
Is it me or does the Platinum trophy icon look different now the 2.40?
Dustin @ Jul 8th 2008 3:38AM
Holy crap man your right! Its not purple anymore, nice find!
Gambit07 @ Jul 8th 2008 3:44AM
I was scratchin' my head, I didn't think it looked this fancy before.
Paul (PSN: heypaul) @ Jul 8th 2008 3:48AM
Yeah it looks much better. Instead of some purple royal crown, it now looks like an NBA championship trophy. Pretty awesome.
lesisking @ Jul 8th 2008 5:51AM
Yeah it has changed different colour and style
halfbaked{NZ} @ Jul 8th 2008 3:29AM
OMG my update is taking forever, if i knew it was going to take this long i would have kept playing GTA and left it overnight.
Hey how long has the option to "shut down after update" been available? First time ive seen it but i could have just missed it before
Ves @ Jul 8th 2008 5:19AM
since firmware 2.40. I guess it was probably meant for updates like this which take long.
Dustin @ Jul 8th 2008 3:30AM
aslo, my downloaded went supper fast. idk if it was just like a smaller patch which what the 360 does or what, it was werid, i looked away and looked back and it was already half way done. never that fast. usually it takes me about 2 minutes to download, but it only took me like 50 seconds
XeroKool @ Jul 8th 2008 3:33AM
Downloading right now. I had 2.40 the day it come out. Was really digging the in-game xmb even though it was a little slow to load the icons at times. Other than that I had no issues whatsoever.
-.- @ Jul 8th 2008 3:34AM
I'm going to wait, and watch if there's anyone who has trouble with this one.
Carbon60 @ Jul 8th 2008 3:36AM
"Those lucky enough to have 2.40 working on their systems know that in-game XMB works incredibly well, and trophy support is absolutely addictive"
Yup, it is getting closer to being as good as the 360. Keep it up Sony.
Paul (PSN: heypaul) @ Jul 8th 2008 3:44AM
Best feature is the auto install. It was nice not having to check back every five minutes to see whether it was time to hit X to install yet.
NukeAssault @ Jul 8th 2008 3:56AM
Downloading is taking forever. =P
Ptrack_Git @ Jul 8th 2008 3:56AM
It would appear my trophies still don't work yet... I'll try again tomorrow... custom soundtrack still works at least :\
Nachkebia @ Jul 8th 2008 3:57AM
Wow I feel so honored and blessed, patch of the patch is out from Sony with gods blessing, seriously key phase here is "Sony get your Sh## together" :)
Brodie-san @ Jul 8th 2008 4:29AM
Though I admit that I'm also concerned about the (lack of) testing of these firmwares releases would you rather they just played it safe and never updated anything ?
They messed up. They fixed it (I hope!). I feel sorry for those people who had their PS3s bricked and I hope Sony REALLY takes care of them but this is the (digital download) world we live in.
vegantnt @ Jul 8th 2008 4:16AM
is anyone else concerned about Sony's ability to put out solid firmware? First they put out a weak Psp firmware which has to be quickly patched up... Now they put out an amazing firmware for ps3 that needs to be quickly patched...
Someone is seriously dropping the ball over there.
From now on I'll be waiting before getting new firmware. I just can't risk my 60gb ps3. I have this terrible fear it might get bricked and since my model isnt made anymore I'll be stuck with whatever refurb they throw my way
MakaiOokami @ Jul 8th 2008 7:45AM
You don't have to worry about that dude. Most of the firmware issues for this saga were rare. Not only that but you can tell by the added "Do not turn off your system" that most of the calls were due to people shutting their PS3 off like ignorant fools.
I seriously doubt Sony had anything wrong with the firmware. I just think people need to learn about the risks of Updating before they go and try and interrupt it in any way.
Pax Pacis @ Jul 8th 2008 4:19AM
Can somebody confirm they patched the DRM issue?
With 2.40 I can play Warhawk with any PSN account, this is only possible with the Blue-ray disc version and not the downloaded one, after the 2.40 upgrade this DRM issue was gone, and I could finally play with my current PSN account..
Danny Lomas @ Jul 8th 2008 4:20AM
yaaaaaaaay!!!! I've been waiting all week for this, I din't get chance to download 2.40 1st time round. I can't w8 to start to rank up my trophies! Great addition well done Sony, keep it up.
dave @ Jul 8th 2008 6:00AM
NO IN GAME MUSIC THEN
HanzoTheRazor @ Jul 8th 2008 7:21AM
Doesn't anyone listen or read??? ALL games prior to 2.40 NEED to be PATCHED for in-game music and trophies. The only game currently that has been PATCHED is SSDHD. Warhawk and Uncharted have got confirmations to recieve patches as well and most new games will automatically have these features.
MakaiOokami @ Jul 8th 2008 7:50AM
Apparently reading is not something someone does after purchasing a 400-600 dollar system when the most anticipated features come out, get removed, and get updated.
NO ONE EVER SAID THEY WOULD WORK WITH ANY GAME!
EVERYONE that knows how to read properly and be intelligent in any way shape or form, knew that games would have to be patched *sigh* sorry for the anger but... it's never been a secret, it's never been unstated, it's always been the same question with the same answer EVEN BEFORE IT WAS RELEASED T_T. They can check the PSblog on their PS3 browser, it also directs them directly to the Youtube account for SCEA... why can't they just explore every once and a while and read.
JaffaBoy @ Jul 8th 2008 8:07AM
Dave, they have already said 2.40/1 firmware enables it, but its the game producers that have to add it into their games.
HanzoTheRazor @ Jul 8th 2008 7:26AM
I noticed too that since 2.40 the music menu has a short cut to the album currently playing. It is a question mark and has it's own little play options. Nice little feature which makes it easier to select from. What a media station! :p
MakaiOokami @ Jul 8th 2008 7:42AM
LAWL. Sony practically confirmed it was a user error.
2.4 comes out... minimal people have errors but a few have a bricked system.
2.41 comes out Sony adds "DO NOT TURN OFF SYSTEM OR IT MAY NOT WORK AGAIN" message.
Sound familiar? Should I say "I BRICKED MY PSP" forums? That is hilarious. It looks like most of the people calling in were saying "Well I shut it off..."
So ya this was never really a Sony issue anyway. The only other reason people could come up with was high server load cause of the minimal affected people from the firmware update. So... ya... Hopefully that'll end a lot of bricked systems from people that don't know how dangerous a firmware update can be.
The Aggie CEO @ Jul 8th 2008 8:27AM
I coulda sworn that message was in ALL updates prior as well.........
what idiot turns off a computer when they are installing Windows or Linux???
I mean really??
MakaiOokami @ Jul 9th 2008 9:32AM
There was some added stuff that I didn't see the last time I installed update. They definately added some new info there.
