PS3 Soulcalibur IV pre-orders trumping competition

Such impressive numbers show that a third-party title can perform just as well, if not better, on PS3 than on Xbox 360. What can account for such an impressive showing by PlayStation fans? Could it be the series regulars from the PS2, the superior D-Pad, or the dark allure of Darth Vader over Yoda?

Yep everyone wants to be Vader! You can not resist the dark side of the force!
Averna @ Jul 11th 2008 10:44AM
Its gotta be Vader, but looking at the gameplay videos of both Yoda and Darth... Id prefer to have Yoda. Id like to see *never going to happen* Yoda become available at a later date as DLC, and of course vice versa for the 360.
SimplyB @ Jul 11th 2008 10:59AM
I don't know maybe after a mount or two of release we might see DLC. Depends on how much people ask for it and you know all the 360 people want Vader, I think that PS3 owners would welcome Yoda as well.
xcrunk @ Jul 11th 2008 11:17AM
yar....it's f*cking Vader. Duh.
scott @ Jul 11th 2008 10:23AM
i think its vader and the possibility of dlc for kratos
Dehshizknight @ Jul 11th 2008 4:58PM
If Kratos DOES come to Soul Caliber IV, I'll buy the game. Haha!
sean @ Jul 11th 2008 10:32AM
i have both consoles. and there is no way in hell id ever play a fighting game on 360. we bought MK2 on XBLA and only played it a few times. Dpad sucks on 360.
plus i darth vader kicks ass
lesisking @ Jul 11th 2008 10:33AM
This is a game that I have had on pre order for a while looking forward to it
Brodie-san @ Jul 11th 2008 10:37AM
Could be the folks who picked up the PS3 with MGS4.
These would be people who've joined the party a little late and, instead of delving into the PS3's back catalogue (and probably knowing little about the new IPs like Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Resistance, etc.) see Soul Calibur IV being released and think: "Aha! I remember those Soul games! I played them before. Oh, and is that VADER!?"
*add to cart*
JerJerBinks @ Jul 11th 2008 11:07AM
That's definitely possible, a few of my friends did the same thing with MGS4 and just end up borrowing the back catalog from me. It kind of sucks though ... I have a hankering to play Heavenly Sword and Uncharted, but they are currently on loan.
Brodie-san @ Jul 11th 2008 12:17PM
I'm going to wait til the trophies for Uncharted are available and then going to play through it again.
As for Heavenly Sword, that's next on my list.
I'm actually looking forward to the fact that it's short.
:)
Eggy @ Jul 11th 2008 10:43AM
How accurate a reflection of general sales is amazon though?
Averna @ Jul 11th 2008 10:47AM
Its a valid sample of data. I dont see why ps3 owners would use amazon any more than 360 owners.
The data would likely be different, but with the data skewed that much... I think the overall outcome would reflect, to some degree, something similar to this.
My lunch @ Jul 11th 2008 10:46AM
D-pad
Ted @ Jul 11th 2008 10:50AM
So does the PS3 version have Vader and the 360 Yoda?
I thought both characters were on both versions.
Brodie-san @ Jul 11th 2008 11:01AM
Nope, it's as you say - we get Vader. 360 gets Yoda.
They did something similar before where Link, Spawn and Heihachi were in Soul Calibur II - depending on your console of choice (GameCube, Xbox and PS2 respectively).
Bobby Ensminger @ Jul 11th 2008 12:17PM
Agree completely here, the 360 D-pad sucks for fighters and the PS3 is much more suited.
champ2k2 @ Jul 11th 2008 10:50AM
It's probably because people realize that the xbox 360 controller is useless for fighting games. I hope that wont be taken as flamebait.
Brodie-san @ Jul 11th 2008 12:19PM
Best of luck with that!
;)
marauder800 @ Jul 11th 2008 10:57AM
I'm getting it for PS3, driven strictly by the d-pad. I'd prefer to have Yoda myself but I'm sure this will be future DLC anyway.
grimlock26 @ Jul 11th 2008 10:57AM
I own both 360 and PS3 and Vader with a better D-pad seals the deal.
Brodie-san @ Jul 11th 2008 11:03AM
You going to back that up with some sort of explanation or just gonna leave it just hanging there?
SimplyB @ Jul 11th 2008 11:09AM
LoL. yeah nobody goes to Amazon to buy 360 games. Most 360 owners are to young to use a credit card and mom and dad won't let them use theirs. (Truth, and Sarcasm)
Ted @ Jul 11th 2008 11:17AM
Well, I own PS3 and 360 and we would like both but really, why would I waste the money on both?
Skunk Ape @ Jul 11th 2008 11:31AM
It probably has a lot to do with the D-pad and Vader, but I'm thinking a lot of fighting game fans bought the PS3 thinking there would be more than 1 fighting game released per year.
Ravenblight @ Jul 11th 2008 12:19PM
I think another factor is that up until the release of MGS 4 not as many people had PS3's as there wasnt any real game worth havng...or rather a franchise game.
More people with Ps3's and more standard titles getting released i think Sony has a good chance at retaking/competing in the market that they dominated for what 8 years?
I think the dpad may play a part ( Never liked the xbox Dpad) but i think it is more to do with Vader in this case.
maxpontiac @ Jul 11th 2008 11:48AM
Lets see. A green gremlin, or the best villian in sci-fi history?
Dan @ Jul 11th 2008 11:53AM
Ironic as I just pre-ordered the premium version for PS3 last night w/ shipping to be received the same day it comes out. Can't wait for it, still have hopes that kratos is in it somehow.... I can dream cant i??
HektikLyfe @ Jul 11th 2008 11:54AM
I think sales numbers will greatly reduce the difference, if not obliterate them.
Ravenblight @ Jul 11th 2008 12:12PM
At least this time they did something right
I dunno wtf they were thinking with SC 2 when they put Hiachi in...oh yea i sooo want someone from another fighting game in the ps version of the game *face palm*
X-Box and Game cube owners were the real winners for that. Link made sense represents nintendo and fit into the genre, Spawn..a gift to McFarlane no doubt (also a good way to gain notoriety for a game on a "new system" at the time)
I really was surprised they didnt use Cloud or Sephiroth considering that you can really thank FF7 for helping make the Playstation the system of choice. (Not trying to be a fanboi here) I really think that had they gone that route back then Sc2 version on PS2 would have been better. The game wa still good but Hiachi still sucks.
Darth Vader is really the winning factor here.
Brodie-san @ Jul 11th 2008 12:25PM
Heihachi Mishima wants a word with you about your spelling of his name.
;)
Ravenblight @ Jul 11th 2008 12:38PM
lol wasnt worth remembering the correct spelling his name :P
Didnt like the game Tekken (never really saw why anyone did for that matter) and he is by far the worse character i have ever seen/played in the Sc series.
But you have my apologies for the bad spelling..not my forte!!
SkeetSkiLee @ Jul 12th 2008 1:31AM
i loved playing as heihachi...heiyachi? ...OQ(@#*)! but anyway i loved playing as him cuz it was so kool that he was taking on people who had swords the size of their own bodies but he only had wrist guards! so awesome, showed all the soul calibur character who was the BOSS. I never really like Spawn on xbox... seemed out of place... why Spawn...?
Vcize @ Jul 11th 2008 12:15PM
"What can account for such an impressive showing by PlayStation fans?"
This one is pretty easy.
PS3 d-pad >>>>>>> 360 d-pad
Vader >>>>> Yoda
Also, since you can never play against more than one person at a time, that lessens the allure of XBL some in this game.
CuSztOm16 @ Jul 11th 2008 12:20PM
I definately got my PS3 last year due to the D-pad. I'm not a huge fan of xbox. I mean its kool for shooting games, BUT as for fighting games (except the DOA series) it feels horrible to me. Plus i think there is more of a fan base for soul caliber on the PS3 due to soul caliber III coming out on the PS2 exclusively. Anyways if i had to pick between the two systems it would be ps3 due to the d-pad, lol.
Cody @ Jul 11th 2008 12:44PM
or maybe its only 1 of 6 decent games out on the ps3
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Jul 11th 2008 12:55PM
Counting your chickens before they hatch...didn't GTAIV have more preorders on the PS3, as well?
Dwag @ Jul 11th 2008 1:09PM
What happened to Tekken 6?
MizzDiva @ Jul 12th 2008 8:55AM
Well, from some things I've heard there's suppose to be some new annoucements or update info possibly about Tekken 6's console release (it's been in the arcades for some time) around the time either SoulCalibur IV is released.
Oh best believe, I've been waiting for a while on Tekken 6, too! Actually, it's one of the main reasons that pushed me to get a PS3. ;)
Dan @ Jul 11th 2008 1:19PM
yeah...because Amazon ONLY offers PS3 games... dont bother mentioning that its been selling 360 games since its release and has been offering deals and offers as well for all systems....
yeah your totally right........ -_-
Desolation @ Jul 11th 2008 1:46PM
It's because of Vader. Everyone I know who chose the PS3 version, including myself, did it for that reason.
basil ghazi @ Jul 11th 2008 2:05PM
the force is strong with this one!!!!!
asuma08 @ Jul 11th 2008 2:20PM
Obviously for most people, the reason why they're pre-ordering the PS3 version more is because of Vader.
Personally (as I agree with Sean), the reason why I'm pre-ordering it is because of the Dual Shock 3. I'm so used to the directional pad ever since the PS1 and the 360's D-Pad is atrocious. You can still play 3D fighting games using the analog stick, though. (I played DOA 4 this way, and it wasn't too bad.)
MikeDawg @ Jul 11th 2008 2:29PM
I'll explain in just 2 words...
VEH-DUR
Dwag @ Jul 11th 2008 3:03PM
I still believe the 360 version will more copies.
skin.bintin @ Jul 11th 2008 6:42PM
I think half the reason is Xbox players are busy playing numerous other great games. Plus the fighters never seem to do so great on the Xbox. Plus, you have Vader on the PS3 version, which is a big draw card.
Personally I prefer Xbox, but having Vader on PS3 is pushing me towards that version.
crayzedcrazed @ Jul 11th 2008 6:30PM
What numerous great 360 games? There really hasn't been any new games on the 360 that were great and not on the ps3. That really isn't a valid excuse.
skin.bintin @ Jul 11th 2008 6:46PM
I'm speaking from personal experience. Plenty of games that still have a lot of players playing online on Xbox's superior online service. That is my personal opinion, therefore it's valid.
JaseH @ Jul 12th 2008 8:55PM
skin.bathin, yeah sure. Xbox fanboys aren't wasting their time playing SCIV because of "great games"
But they love to waste their time on stupid comments and such.

Its a hard choice for me personally I may eventually have both, buy the version i don't get a launch in the bargain bin down the road. The 360 Dpad would be a concern for me except I have Hori sticks for both my 360 and my PS3. probably just shape my decision based on what my friends get which will probably be 360.
