Jack Tretton revealed at today's Sony press conference at E3 that the PSN is going to be opened up for "universal access." What this means is that you can access your friends list and other PlayStation Network content via your PC. You can access the PSN even when not around your PS3.
great way to show that you have no idea how cool that is. I don't have to have my PS3 to communicate with my friends while they're playing games, don't have to have a computer right next to the PS3 in order to browse the internet and keep in touch, being able to ask someone while they're in a game and I"m online if they want to set up a game later on tonight. Them contacting me while I'm youtubing... It's all sweet stuff.
The only thing I hope that they do is create some sort of Sony Instant Messanger. That would be the coolest thing I could think of to top off this new service. One thing is for certain though... it's not useless.
I think you've envisioned what the ideal state would be not what Sony is actually delivering (at least so far). It falls far short of communicating with your friends while they are playing games.
There doesn't seem to be any cross-pc-PS3 communication. About all you can do is check to see if you're friends are online and what they are playing. Kool, but I'd love to have the functionality you mention.
xbox has already had this feature- its called windows live integration. But its nice to see sony finally getting up to speed. Maybe one day they can have real gamer cards that are tied to your trophies and levels too.
To really make this a cool feature, they shoud integrate Remote Start / Play from the PSN so I can pick a movie to download from my PC at work so that when I get home that night, it's downloaded, ready to go.

Hasn't this already rolled out (to some degree) now? Or are they going a bit further than what we saw yesterday?

They are basically playing catch up to Live, doing a good job now imo.
This is meant to bridge the gap and keep the PS community connected even when not on their systems (like Live does already)
