inFamous to get 'blockbuster multimillion dollar' support
inFamous is going to be the "next big thing," if Sony has their way. The upcoming 2009 PS3 exclusive from Sucker Punch is going to be getting a massive marketing treatment from SCEA, with a "blockbuster multimillion dollar marketing campaign" in the works. According to a SCEA press release, inFamous will be treated to "aggressive television, print, online and viral advertising campaigns, full promotional support, dedicated point-of-purchase displays and merchandising support." For an untested, new IP, Sony is daring to support the title as a true flagship title.
Sony has become much more aggressive with marketing as of late, especially with the upcoming Resistance 2, which is also getting the same treatment. It'll be interesting to see the extent of this "blockbuster" marketing campaign, and how it will be able to shape the public opinion of such an ambitious (and cool-looking) game.

Sony definitely needs to step up its marketing game. Here's hoping this gets the push it deserves.
Dan @ Jul 17th 2008 2:32AM
Oh my god yes, they have been a non-stop crap wagon of ads from sony for a long time now.
Lets just hope the Europe division isn't in charge.....
We don't need no freaky and weird ass ads......
Calite @ Jul 16th 2008 9:39PM
It looks like Sony is trying their hardest to stay in the game, especially after E3. Don't get me wrong, they didn't do bad at E3, but M$ had some huge announcements. It's good that Sony's trying hard, if one side decisively wins, they don't have as much drive to do better. Let's see where this goes.
xcrunk @ Jul 16th 2008 10:20AM
Why does Sony keep doing the old "here's what's coming next year routine"?
How about just concentrating on what's coming in the next 6 months and that's it?
If you have Resistance2, God of WarIII, LBP and Motorstorm 2 coming before Christmas....all AAA titles, why bother talking about next year?
And stop talking about HOME....talk about it when it's READY.
McBonk @ Jul 16th 2008 10:41AM
Wow. Are you new around here? Sony gets blasted when they _don't_ talk about what's coming next year, and now they get blasted when they do.
A system that promotes itself as "the future" should look to... the future, eh?
dillon_RADio @ Jul 16th 2008 11:18AM
god of war 3 will not be out before christmas...
Dwag @ Jul 16th 2008 10:22AM
What a waste in money they should use this multimillion dollar support on titles like GoW3 and GT5(which I hope is released next year).
They don't even know if this title will suceed and from what I've seen all we're getting is a generic sandbox game with a gimmick(Haze,Timeshift) and moral choices.
browntown @ Jul 16th 2008 10:50AM
This game looks great, just stop bitching
Jason @ Jul 16th 2008 10:49AM
I beg to differ. Why would you waste all that money on titles like GoW3 & GT5 that will sell pretty well without huge marketing efforts. I suspect most gamers are aware of those two franchises, but maybe not so aware of InFamous. I know I was not very aware of InFamous and I keep up with this stuff. Think about the people who don't come to these kind of blogs everyday, how do they hear about this game?
Dwag @ Jul 16th 2008 11:43AM
@Browntown
The game is trash who cares about graphics if gameplay is as generic as this stop sucking.
HAAS599 @ Jul 16th 2008 11:54AM
@ Dwag
I brushed this game off at first but its starting to look better and better.
Also, have you played the game yet?
Dan @ Jul 16th 2008 11:58AM
God of War doesn't even have a deadline or projection yet, don't expect to see it until late 2009.
GT5 is in the same boat with no updates on status what so ever.
So sony is making the right choice to promote this game that is expected in Sprin next year. Plus as Jason said, God of War and Gran Turismo are highly known series were infamous is not.
Dwag @ Jul 17th 2008 2:31AM
@HAAS599
Come on did I play haze and timeshift until the demo came out no and I still called them out on there BS so don't give me the 'have you played game yet then you don't know shit yet' cause frankly if you watch a guy play the game and seeing its generic gameplay and try to help this community by laying down some opinoins that don't go like 'OMG!!!!!! best game EVAR!!!!' or 'great Graphics'. I'm just saying someone has to call a game out on its BS when they aren't doing anything innovative and are just showing a regular old sandbox with no hook.
@@DAn
They what about KillZone 2 then and Resistance 2 which have a more specific date then a season and a year.
finelicker @ Jul 16th 2008 10:46AM
Its all well and good throwing nomey at it, I just hope the game delivers.
Haze suffered massive over hyping and I feel the money that was spent on advertising was a total waste, there were loads of adverts on TV for it, but it didn't make the game any better.
kamiboy @ Jul 16th 2008 10:26AM
If SONY's so called marketing chimps couldn't even manage to make MGS4 sell then that money would be better invested being used as toilet paper.
McBonk @ Jul 16th 2008 10:43AM
MGS4... let's see... aging hero and supervillain interspersed with some love triangles, treatises on war economies, morality and suicide - yeah, that's an easy sell. /rolleyes
kamiboy @ Jul 17th 2008 2:32AM
No, let ME see. Gaylo, worst piece of sheit since E.T. The Extra terrestrial for the Atari, if Uncle Billy could make that turd nugget sell then anything can be sold. Uncle Billy could sell AIDS to children more successfully than SONY can an actually great game.
Eggy @ Jul 16th 2008 11:08AM
Yeah because selling more than a million on day one is really bad. :S
ComicShaman @ Jul 16th 2008 11:26AM
But since MGS4 has sold, and sold very well, that sort of blows your thesis, doesn't it?
kamiboy @ Jul 17th 2008 3:44AM
2.1 millions is not well, not for the biggest game since the launch of PS3, not compared to the production values and quality, not compared to the money Konami spent, in fact it it is pathetic. Gaylo 3, that mediocre piece of shit featuring a faggot monkey in a suit sold more than 5 mill with as much ease as a fat guy cuts wind, not to mention all of the other multi million selling bottles of urine out on that piece of shit console.
MGS4 is the biggest third party exclusive the PS3 has ever had and the abysmal sales numbers compared to how it should have done it will now also be the last because its and other good games failures on the PS3 sends a clear message to the industry and specially Japan, and that message is don't even bother.
I really wish the so called idiot enthusiasts would pull their heads out of their asses and take whiff, things are a lot more rotten than you think. SONY is in trouble, they cant give away the best games in the world on their system meanwhile Uncle Billy can squat down lay a fat one down on the face of gamers and immediately it is a guaranteed multi million seller.
Somehow the laws of quality were suddenly reversed when Uncle Billy started sodomising the industry and most gamers started enjoying it.
Dwag @ Jul 16th 2008 10:27AM
This game reminds a lot of Crackdown and frankly I don't believe it deserves this support.
Resistance 2 deserves this even though it might let down a few people but still it deserves it more than InFamous and its generic box of sand. I'm betting i'm only gonna see 1 commercial of Resistance 2 while Gears 2 and others get like a new one every minute.
xcrunk @ Jul 16th 2008 10:31AM
Killzone 2 looks amazing. That's a game that should get a HUGE push.
Anyone see the preview on G4? It looks killer. Same with Prince of Persia.
Noshino @ Jul 16th 2008 10:33AM
Same was said about MGS4, and the only thing I saw were a few ads on TV....and it was barely twice a day at around 7 to 8pm...
What Im hoping for is not a "blockbuster multimillion dollar support", Im looking for a GOOD campaing
rohan @ Jul 16th 2008 10:40AM
sony should not only treat its first party games like this but also the thrid party games
Noshino @ Jul 16th 2008 10:46AM
Sucker Punch is not first party...
Ferdasyn @ Jul 16th 2008 10:52AM
Sony can afford to spend millions advertising something we're probably all gonna buy anyway, but can't afford to keep Final Fantasy? Get your priorities right.
Phantom @ Jul 16th 2008 11:43AM
FF ,they let that go so that square didn't die
OAKside @ Jul 16th 2008 11:47AM
Square-Enix couldn't afford the exclusivity (low install base/profits). I see it as Sony simply letting them make (supposedly much-needed) money after the PS3 version's already released.
frankym @ Jul 16th 2008 11:02AM
This is how M$ markets their triple A titles....Good morning Sony!!
Vcize @ Jul 16th 2008 11:10AM
Well if that latest trailer is any indication, then it will be the next big thing, at least for me.
Crackdown is one of the most underrated games I've ever played. This looks like Crackdown except you can also shoot lightning. Awesome.
burandon @ Jul 16th 2008 11:25AM
inFamous looks like it could be all right--I don't think we know enough about it yet to say one way or the other--but I'm not impressed that Sony's going to spend millions in advertising. It won't change the quality of the game any. I'd rather hear about Sony spending more money in game development, or in getting more third-party support, than on advertising. I feel like they've got so much potential that they're not even trying to tap.
Also, just a personal quibble of mine, but I'm never excited anymore when Sony talks about "the next big thing." I'd rather they step up their game without saying anything than talk themselves up and then not deliver.
Vcize @ Jul 16th 2008 12:00PM
Unfortunately, everyone is in this business to make money. Even more unfortunately, better game development usually doesn't mean more money.
See: Nintendo Wii.
koehler83 @ Jul 16th 2008 12:07PM
But will there be any beheaded goats of penis thumbs? I dont see the point of spending a million dollars on marketing without one penis thumb.
Dwag @ Jul 17th 2008 2:31AM
Sony's making some mistakes I mean no B/C in the 80Gig from mass marketing a game that might as well get the amount of attention MGS4 did america(very little).
Infamous is generic game with a gimmick just watch the live demo from GS nothing special. They could have put this money into Home.
ImOnFireNrdy @ Jul 16th 2008 1:24PM
Im really not excited about this game much at all. I think Prototype looks LOTS better. They should make Prototype exclusive!!!!!!!!!!!!
lantus @ Jul 16th 2008 3:27PM
I watched a live stage demo on Gamespot, I'm so getting this game in the Spring, no need to convince me! :D
Johnno @ Jul 17th 2008 6:36PM
WIll some of you relax??? Sony will promote each of its titles well. Resistence 2, inFAMOUS, Killzone 2, LitttleBigPlanet... etc. Heck even MGS4 is sharing the spotlight with their first party characters like Nathan Hale, Kratos and Sackboy on stage. MGS4 is bundled with BC 80 GB units too. Every purchase of these is a purchase of the game. And MGS4 should continue to sell neatly overtime. It's a must have title for every new owner. And with DLC coming out for MGO every now and then it'll continue to receive exposure and make money.
