Not available in Canada. (I tested with proxy to see that the US version is up)
Also, read your TOS...no re-downloading so swapping your HDD or sending it in for service and you lose your purchased content.
GridloQ @ Jul 16th 2008 1:07AM
No redownloading SUCKS. When I had a 360, I would often need to clear space on my hard drive so I'd delete some TV shows, knowing I could always download them whenever I saw fit.
Do we know if you can save movies on any type of drives (USB, Memory Stick or external HDD)?
Dylan @ Jul 16th 2008 1:11AM
I dunno about one PS3 only. It says you can only have it on one "activated" console at a time.
However there's an option in the Account Management menu to activate your PS3 for video content.
dragon @ Jul 16th 2008 10:13AM
That's a deal-breaker for me. (Especially since I plan to upgrade the hard disk before too long.) They call it a purchase (and price it accordingly), but it's really just a 2-year rental. For comparison, Amazon lets you download videos multiple times. (Nobody wants to store 2 GB video files on their hard disk forever.)

Not available in Europe / United Kingdom.
Wake up SCEE. Sony are doing things again.
Eggy @ Jul 16th 2008 5:20AM
Of course it's not available in Europe. European companies have bought the rights to these series and movies. If they would offer that online service here they would lose that business. it's the same for every movie service.
tom @ Jul 16th 2008 12:14AM
Rather a letdown. It's good to see an anime section, unrated versions, and a few different shows; but overall it's no good.
The prices are too high for everything.
You can't buy HD video.
I hope it get's more content and fixes the lack of HD video in general.
Lucas @ Jul 16th 2008 12:17AM
I a bit disappointed with the pricing structure and with the fact that currently the HD videos can only be rented. All the videos for sale are SD.
Tim Parsons @ Jul 16th 2008 12:29AM
of course selling HD movies would affect Blu-Ray Sales
Popfrogs @ Jul 16th 2008 12:37AM
Tim has a good point here. I thought it was a glaring omission that they left out HD sales...but there's more than meets the eye.
mavbsbll21 @ Jul 16th 2008 12:18AM
Whats the deal with renting a movie? How long or how many times do you get to view the movie?
Kspraydad @ Jul 16th 2008 12:25AM
Check you email...you should have been directed by SONY this evening to read the new TOS. Rentals must be watched within 14days of purchase. Once you start watching something you have the file for 24hrs.
Tim Parsons @ Jul 16th 2008 12:21AM
I don't see this at all? WTF SONY,. is this State said only?????????????
WHat a bunch of BS!!!!!
Kspraydad @ Jul 16th 2008 12:24AM
Tim...read post #1.
You can blame Canadian movie distributors and the CRTC...Live and iTunes both took awhile before being available here.
Given our wonderful 'unlimited' internet...I'd be eating up over 10% of my monthy cap downloading an HD movie anyway!
Deadpool @ Jul 16th 2008 12:26AM
I know this guy named Bruce Banner, he can really help you with your anger. Just don't make him hungry...you won't like him when he's hungry. Hmm...that's might not be right.
Wait....yeah....I'm pretty sure it's hungry.
Tim Parsons @ Jul 16th 2008 12:27AM
i dont have a cap
Kspraydad @ Jul 16th 2008 12:34AM
Business plan? Who is your ISP?
Tim Parsons @ Jul 16th 2008 12:46AM
a local Cable Company ,. hell i average about 30GB up 50GB down a month,. June shows 60GB down 38GB up in my traffic monitor lol,.
adolson @ Jul 16th 2008 9:48AM
I use Vianet in Ontario, and no cap for me either.
Dustin @ Jul 16th 2008 12:23AM
The PSVS is just amazing. So many movies, alot that are actually good! Awesome tv shows, even Family Guy, Robot Chicken and Futureama! Too bad you can preview tv shows.
Nick @ Jul 16th 2008 12:23AM
I'm pretty happy for it at the moment. I was surprised that HD videos aren't available (yet, at least) and none of the TV shows are in HD. I don't really want to download HD movies, though, because the file sizes are huge. That's just me, though.
will @ Jul 16th 2008 12:32AM
there are quite a few HD movies available right now, there's an option to search through HD only on the left side of the screen...though they can only be rented, not purchased
Nick @ Jul 16th 2008 12:33AM
That's what I meant. You can't own any HD content, yet.
leiwei @ Jul 16th 2008 12:25AM
Surprisingly a lot of content IMO for its first night of launch. I like how it switches seamlessly between the PSN Games Store & Video Store. But holy cow HD rental 6.4 gig download yikes! I wonder if HD download = DVD quality.
Kspraydad @ Jul 16th 2008 1:32AM
Based on file size comparisons with Live service it is likely 720p
paul @ Jul 16th 2008 12:30AM
HD download = HD. SD download = DVD
noks @ Jul 16th 2008 12:29AM
.
oldmike @ Jul 16th 2008 12:35AM
one anime is only on PSN sony must have payed well for it
as bones did it and there a big name not some art house
Lucas @ Jul 16th 2008 12:31AM
I'm reading through the TOS now.
"You may view Sold Content for an unlimited number of times on an Authorized Device. Sold Content in standard definition format that was initially downloaded onto a PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system may be copied solely by the PSN account that purchased the Sold Content for use on up to three (3) activated PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems. Sold Content in standard definition format that was initially downloaded for a PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system may be viewable on two (2) other activated PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems. Sold Content in high definition format may be viewed on only one (1) activated PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system." Meaning HD videos can't be transferred to the PSP.
"Downloading will be not permitted outside the Authorized Term. In addition, once the Video Content has been downloaded from PSN, you will not be able to download it again for any reason without purchase of another copy. " WTF? Can't re download?
noks @ Jul 16th 2008 12:32AM
I have what seems to be killzone 2 multiplayer footage,
they had the video in the PS store but removed it shortly afterwards. The store had 25 E3 vids now it has 24. the killzone 2 footage was removed. how can i quickly get it to you guys?
Kspraydad @ Jul 16th 2008 12:40AM
It is on Youtube:

I hope futurama the dvd that came out a while back will be available for download soon.
vahdyx @ Jul 16th 2008 12:35AM
I am happy, but what'll make me really happy is a few good JRPG's and more Western RPG's.
WTF SONY,
anyway, it's cool and I've downloaded like 4 TV shows for my psp for work tomorrow.
American productivity at it's finest
kev @ Jul 16th 2008 12:53AM
Not all SD movies are available for purchase. Swiss Family Robinson for example. Renting is the only option so far.
tom @ Jul 16th 2008 12:40AM
If you can't find it, it may be in the top left hand corner of the store.
Well, it would be OK to only rent HD if there were more titles and much cheaper. Currently, Netflix or my rental place up the street are better options.
It's almost as if they don't want to compete with discs or maybe they are just getting their foot in early and everything will be solved.
I would love to buy HD movies for about 15$ even 720p would be fine. I'm optimistic but disappointed as far as getting something tonight.
sami @ Jul 16th 2008 12:48AM
i'll probably only download like 1-3 movies a year... the first of which will probably be the onion movie...
shoot77 @ Jul 16th 2008 12:53AM
I think that theres over 266 movies and a bunch of TV shows and some
have a least one full season
whistlepig @ Jul 16th 2008 1:02AM
i pull the store up and cant find it anywhere
Tim Parsons @ Jul 16th 2008 1:17AM

klexam @ Jul 16th 2008 1:06AM
My fears of the Sony PSN Video store were just confirmed. Old movies. The closest to a New Release I could find was 10,000 B.C. available in High Def for $4.99. This isn't a bad HD rental price if it hasn't been out for weeks already and I have already watched it. SD rentals at $2.99 aren't bad deals, it's just that they are mostly all old movies. From Robocop to Rocky. Without New Releases I will unlikely ever rent from this service.
Arnon @ Jul 16th 2008 1:12AM
I think this is pretty amazing for the PS3 to finally have a video section.. but it just came out way too late.. I mean, the day before, Microsoft announced that they're partnering with Netflix to let customers rent and keep from over 10,000 movies and TV shows, and invite 7 other people over online to view them. Just doesn't seem like a good time to release this.
jake18oly (XBL,PSN: RSXtypeSfan) @ Jul 16th 2008 1:48AM
I saw this tonight when I logged on. It looks pretty good so far but I am not sure that I will use it often. I haven't downloaded any movies off of the Xbox Live Marketplace and I don't see myself renting or buying from the Playstation Store either. I will just stick to Blu-Ray rentals for now.
klexam @ Jul 16th 2008 10:13AM
Keep in mind the following is my opinion only. I am a realist who owns only Sony systems and never an Xbox.
Sony Not Able To Match Microsoft at E3
Sony gave a lot, but just not enough to match the slappin’ they took from Microsoft on day one. Losing a long time exclusive and multiple DLC packages to multiplatform games and way to get older movies to their customers for a nominal fee takes a big comeback. It didn’t happen.
The following is Sony’s list of their BIG announcements:
1.) [Grade = C] Unveiled their “catch-up” video download service. I just checked it out on my PS3 and can say that since they don’t have New Releases, I will probably never rent from it. The prices seemed fair for people who want to rent Rocky or Robocop. You would pay $2.99 for standard definition and $4.99 for high definition. Both are 24hr rentals. You can buy old movies for $9.99. All, except the HD movies that is. Sony wants you to buy their Blu-ray not download HD. Smart and expected move on their part. Next, you can take the rentals and transfer them over to your PSP. No mention of other peripherals. The only thing I might possibly download one day is a high-def movie that I may miss. Then again, I hate to give money over to a mediocre video download service attempt. In Sony’s defense, Microsoft and Netflix don’t have New Releases for download either. Their services are all old movies too. I just thought Sony would try and up the ante. Sony’s service will have major studio supports from Sony, Fox, MGM, Lions Gate, Warner, Disney, Paramount, Turner, Funimation will offer support for PlayStation video.
2.) [Grade = D] Trailers for Resistance 2, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, and God of War 3, in. All showed extended footage, except for GOW3. It was short with no game footage. The big problem here is that we already knew about all these games. There was a Killzone 2 multiplayer trailer found after the conference on their site, which is awesome news, but for some reason Sony didn’t show it at E3. Strange and ridiculous move.
3.) [Grade = A] Trailers for inFamous, Rachet and Clank Expansion. Both of these are great announcements. inFamous is beginning to gather some awesome steam for its Spring 09 release. Who doesn’t want superpowers in a next-gen world? We know Microsoft can’t steal this since Sony is making it. Rachet and Clank has an expansion coming for download only that looks just as awesome as their disc game from last year.
4.) [Grade = A+] Another Sony exclusive: MAG. Sony is making this one too. The reason it is getting an A+ announcement score is because it is first person and is stating it will support 256 players at one time in online maps. WOW! Resistance 2 is breaking new ground already with their 64 players at one time. 256 should feel like a real war. It is not slated to come out for some time, but what an announcement! This is the closet thing to a Microsoft punch as I can find.
5.) [Grade = B] Resistance: Retribution on the PSP. I barely buy PSP games. I might actually get this one.
6.) [Grade = F] 80GB PS3 for $399. Best deal on the market, but it still lacks backward compatibility. BC was a big thing Sony had over Microsoft. Those guys have to keep two systems plugged up. The one I bought when the PS3 first came out plays PS2 and PS3 games. Then Sony pulled the BC plug because it was too expensive. What? The only big leverage you had over the 360 for gaming and you pull it? Since they did not put it back in this bundle then I wouldn’t have even mentioned it if I had been Sony.
7.) [Grade = D] Greatest hits titles. $29.99 retail later this year. Games include Resistance, Motorstorm, Warhawk, Call of Duty 3, Fight Night and Need for Speed Carbon, Rainbow Six Vegas, Assassins Creed, Oblivion, Ninja Gaiden. This is great news for those thinking about getting a PS3. It means they don’t have to spend much to get some really good games. Very few are worth buying though. Only Resistance, Motorstorm and Warkhawk are worth it. The rest I would wait until they went down to $19.99 and then use a %10 off card from Gamestop to get it even cheaper.
8.) [Grade = F] Universal access to PSN account. You can use a PC later this year to see if your friends are at home playing on their PS3’s while your stuck at work. What good is this? None at all.
You can’t get slapped by Microsoft and not have anything huge to bring to the table. Catch up video services and already known about games will just not get it. Price drops and new bundles minus the enhancements they need will just not cut it either. Although Microsoft didn’t have much past the Final Fantasy steal, Sony just didn’t have a jaw dropper like the punch to the face Microsoft delivered. In the end, 360fanboys can say “We have Final Fantasy now” and PS3fanboys can say, “Oh yeah, well, we still have God of War 3 … uh, at least for now.”
Overall Grade for Sony’s E3 = D+

What's funny about this windy comment is that you didn't say how M$ beat Sony. Not once. And I don't know, I don't read that stuff, except a $50 gold account and Netflix, another costly service-- you should justify when you pass wind.
