June NPD figures: over 400k units for PS3, MGS4 best selling title

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was the best-selling video game, with 774,647 units sold. More than 2.4 million software units were sold for PS3 in June, representing an increase of more than 300% from this time last year. (Software totals do not include software units sold as part of the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots PS3 retail bundle).
The incredible success of the PS3 this month shouldn't come as a surprise. We really hope that Sony will be able to continue the momentum of the PlayStation brand in the coming months with its upcoming holiday lineup. Sony's official word, after the break.
"The PlayStation brand is truly hitting its stride on its long-term opportunity across all three platforms. Our strong June numbers serve as proof to the continued momentum of the PS3 and affirms that we're exactly where we expected to be. This month's success can be attributed to the exclusive blockbuster Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and we're poised for continued growth into the back half of the year with a much anticipated line-up, including LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, Resistance 2, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, and NBA '09: The Inside. Additionally, the new PlayStation Network video delivery service will be a big driver for the PS3 and PSP, allowing consumers to extend their multi-media and entertainment experience."

WOOOOT, good games sell well on the ps3, we don't support Turok.
also on teamxbox the fanboys think MGS4 sold 400 k, just goes to show that they can't read, sorry to go off topic but it was funny, lolWOOOOT

Ptrack_Git @ Jul 17th 2008 8:36PM
Oh yeah Woo Hoo Sony too for taking the time to deliver such stellar products, even if it seems like were always waiting, you have finally beginning to truly deliver on the PS3 so keep it coming.
Also Elifunk is out with a demo and some psp games and a bunch of new vids. Three store updates in one week, another reason why Sony rocks!!
soya @ Jul 17th 2008 8:41PM
The Naruto demo rocks! I can not wait until that comes out, 1st day purchase!!
Adis @ Jul 17th 2008 8:23PM
Nice..... Cant wait till LittleBigPlanet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats going toget another 400k units.. Nice job Sony. I can feel Sony is trying really hard to give fans and gamers in general what they want.... Keep it up SONY!
Ben @ Jul 17th 2008 8:39PM
So the PS3 has outsold the 360 for the first half of 2008 by a decent margin now.
lantus @ Jul 17th 2008 8:51PM
I continue to be impressed by Sony's initiative to make people happy, and how considerate they are knowing it takes a long time to deliver games, and the fruits of their labor are finally being finalized. I support them all the way!
McBonk @ Jul 17th 2008 8:50PM
Good news for Sony and MGS! And not to rain on the parade... but didn't I read at one time that MGS4 needed to sell a million on day one to turn a profit? Are these numbers for NA only?
Snowman @ Jul 17th 2008 9:40PM
But did that statement ever make sense to you, why would it need to sell a million on day one, is not going to be on sale on day two, three and onwards?
SOCOMRAIDER @ Jul 17th 2008 10:52PM
Worldwide it did sell over a million units on day one. These numbers are just NA, not EU or JPN.

playcrackthesky @ Jul 17th 2008 10:57PM
That's only North America mate.
It did amazingly well everywhere else.
benny boy @ Jul 18th 2008 4:00AM
I think that statement was just lost in translation and they didn't really need to sell 1 million on day 1.
I think it was just the overall amount.
Dennis @ Jul 17th 2008 8:58PM
That's npd numbers only. The ps3 is killing the xbox ALOT more worldwide.

tan @ Jul 18th 2008 7:02AM
lol
cos people need the cheap blu ray players:)
Robert @ Jul 17th 2008 8:58PM
This is the reason why high quality exclusive games help out the PS3. It's basic proof. And I don't want to mention any names, but hope somebody sees their mistake. Either way a certain sequel will indefinitely boost sales for all consoles it releases on.
As a side note: The Final Fantasy XIII news post on ps3fanboy has around 400 comments, the post on Xbox360fanboy has around 100 posts. Either the xbox360fanboy community isn't as active as the ps3fanboy community or this suggests where the real Japanese/RPG/Anime fan base resides.
AF @ Jul 17th 2008 9:05PM
Imagine how many FF13 could've sold... :(
Laurens Holst @ Jul 18th 2008 4:31AM
I think you don’t need to worry too much about that; FFVIII will still be a platform seller, I bet. Many people who now have a PS2 will buy a PS3 once FFVIII comes out, just like GTA4 drove more PS3 sales than XBox360 sales. Those users have good experiences with the Playstation brand, and the PS3 is still Final Fantasy’s ‘home’ (even though it now lost exclusivity), so they are much more likely to buy a PS3 now.
Hopefully by that time PS3 will have sold so much that there is no financial reason for Square anymore to also abandon exclusivity for FF Versus VIII.
Although I must say, the abundance of RPGs on XBox360 and lack thereof on PS3 kind of has me worried. If it turns out that SO4 won’t be released on PS3 (still no word…), I might have to consider buying an XBox360 for my RPG shot.
Jettic @ Jul 18th 2008 6:19AM
It's still coming to the PS3, it's not a 360 exclusive, just thought I'd remind you, seems like you forgot.
Bobby @ Jul 17th 2008 9:06PM
This wont continue unless we have awesome exclusives. This is why its so important for sony to do WHATEVER they have to to get EXCLUSIVES, or else we have nothing over the competition, as a gaming machine.
Miguel @ Jul 17th 2008 9:07PM
I wonder if Walmart's buy a PS3 get a $100 gift card helped out too. Myself and a few other people I know bought one that week for that deal.
The_Punisher @ Jul 17th 2008 11:59PM
MGS4 did not need to sell 1 million on day opne, but this is US only. It sold around 2.5 million worldwide, so it doesn't matter.
Anyway, it deserves everything it gets. Hope it continues.
Phizzy @ Jul 17th 2008 9:16PM
No source and no actual numbers for all consoles?
Nugent @ Jul 17th 2008 9:27PM
Source is in the headline, its from NPD. They don't cite all the numbers because they'd have to talk about how the Wii has overtaken the 360, and this is the wrong website for that. If you really want to see the numbers, go to Edge Online.
That said, I'm actually slightly surprised the PS3 numbers are so good. Not because MGS4 isn't awesome, but because there was a pre-MGS4 sales bump in May. I didn't think the big sales would continue.
When's Sony's next big game coming out? October? Might be tough for them to keep the momentum going.
McBonk @ Jul 17th 2008 9:56PM
Oh yeah? What's MS got coming out before October?
Dwag @ Jul 17th 2008 9:17PM
Sony needs to bundle more PS3s.
HanzoTheRazor @ Jul 17th 2008 9:20PM
The biggest and best games that are comming to our Black Beauties are 1st party games, something the copy-box lacks. I am very happy to see Sony pumping money and resorces into these studios instead of throwing away money, like M$, to 3rd parties, which will go no where in the long term. So, we are going to see only more and more hi quality block busters on this beast of a platform! Japanese know games, that's that. Just look at Nintendo, they have gone the same way as Sony with supporting themselves, enough said.
browntown @ Jul 17th 2008 9:42PM
Great numbers for the ps3. The teamxbox forums are in spin mode, its amusing. The ps3's future is looking really bright, especially with the great games coming this year, too bad theres too many for me to buy :(
Imagine what SONY could do if they dropped their price by 50 bucks, or even in europe, drop the price a bit and they would tear it up.
Tony C. @ Jul 17th 2008 10:33PM
wonder how that crow taste in MS mouth right about now, after all that chest thumping they did at E3
saito ps3 @ Jul 17th 2008 10:38PM
wow, i was really thinking on getting 360 before sonys conference, but after, i still believe the ps3 is going to win the console war. ff13 is still exclusive in japan to ps3, so it is going to sell like mad, xbot fanboys dont even know what final fantasy is, and will only sell like 500k worldwide on 360, but i think its going to sell about 5 million world wide on ps3. ps3 is beating 360 in europe, japan, and for the year of 2008 so far, america.
browntown @ Jul 18th 2008 12:02AM
I think it will sell a bit more on the ps3, but thats due to japan and europe, 360 could sell more copies in the us, but we've still got alot of time until the game reaches, and with the SONY exclusives that we've seen so far, that uerbase can grow, but i think it will be close, just look at DMC4.
maxpontiac @ Jul 18th 2008 12:00AM
Outstanding. And M$ owes it all to the ROD.
Gloqwi @ Jul 18th 2008 1:04AM
Thanks for giving me old memories of Big Rigs.
If FFXIII does not sell some 360s, they are moving some 2 steps back.
Echnaton @ Jul 18th 2008 3:24AM
Congratulations 2 Sony and the producer of MGS4!
Go go go !!!
BTW: Squenix is not telling the full truth... if they want to reach more people with their games (like FFXIII), WHY do the produce screambox exlusives ? ( I guess M$ has blown $$$ in their a...)
hedpe @ Jul 18th 2008 6:22AM
it's funny they don't realize how obvious it is. capcom is another one. i remember how pissed people got about monster hunter being exclusive to the wii. everyone was like WTF??? like wtf happened to their multiplatform policy?
props to kojima and his crew, MGS always delivers.
Natan82 @ Jul 18th 2008 7:24AM
Thanks to the fact that in Japan (where Final Fantasy sells more than America
and Europe combined) will be PS3 exclusive (2009) and thanks to the fact that in America
and Europe the game will come out very late (2010) the Sony has not lost anything with this
release multiplatform, because in 2010 is too late to be a system seller.
Carney @ Jul 18th 2008 10:10AM
I didn't buy the MGS4 bundle because of MGS4; I bought it because it was the only PS3 with any BC still sold at retail.
I needed to buy it because my 60GB died. I bought it on eBay in May 2008, factory sealed, new in box. Darn thing overheated and crashed all the time, and when it wasn't, it emitted a high pitched shriek. Sony wouldn't fix it free because I hadn't bought it from an "authorized retailer". SquareTrade wouldn't support it because it had pre-existing condition and had died before 60 days had elapsed. Finally the seller agreed to give me a refund if I sent her the dead 60GB back to be destroyed.
But since the 80GB has crippled BC, that means so long to playing Unreal Tournament for PS2, one of my favorite games. So long even to simple games like Namco Museum. I had wanted to get Soulcalibur 2 and 3 to get ready for 4, but no point now.
So frustrating.
chathampax @ Jul 18th 2008 1:12PM
Congrats to Sony for June NPD results, especially after a very disappointing E3. Ok, so we all knew people were going to buy PS3s when MGS4 was coming out. I wouldn't count on this momentum to continue. Since everyone has their MGS4 fix, the numbers will surely go down for the next quarter. I will be very interested in the NPD results from July-September. Resistance 2 is the only exclusive coming out for '08 but the people that are going to buy it are people that already own a PS3. It is not going to drive hardware sales. Just like Gears 2 won't increase hardware sales that much for the 360 because 90% of the people buying it already own a 360.
RagingStormX @ Jul 18th 2008 3:38PM
The strong pull that JRPG's have should not be underestimated on any level. And FF stands as king of that empire....you best believe FF13 Xbox360 bundle packs will move consoles for M$...plus they can preach about Star Ocean 4 and Infinite Undiscovery (SO4 alone is enough for me to buy a 360...I just hope its not e. I know people who bought a 360 just to play FF11 with better graphics. And yes other regions embrace JRPG's more than the US, but the percentage in the US that does welcome the genre is by no means small at all. Its this same effect that MGS4's success has on the PS3, FF13 would have delivered......I am still getting it for the PS3 but Sony will feel the sting of this going multiplat.
