PS Store video service not coming to Europe 'this year'

Not till 2009?! That's a long time to wait for all the Europeans out there -- does Go!View provide any consolation? Tell us what you think.

Worst E3 ever XD
Kristopher gonzalez @ Jul 17th 2008 10:48AM
Well this wasn't a surprise.
tretle @ Jul 17th 2008 10:09AM
prics should be fired already... When the video service was announced on the playstation blog months ago there were loads of comments about the lack of foresight into the european market.
The comments were ignored and look at the situation now, its looks as though scee didn't even know about the video service until after it was announced at e3.
xcrunk @ Jul 17th 2008 10:08AM
The video store is cool. Finally checked it out last night.
WarGames in HD....$4.50. Nice. Not bad at all. Newer HD rentals were $5.99.
I haven't heard, but I'm sure it's 720P resolution.
SimplyB @ Jul 17th 2008 10:09AM
I downloaded Rambo last night. Service rocks! Hate it for the Europeans but you will like it when you get it.
xcrunk @ Jul 17th 2008 10:18AM
I'm just shocked that my Playstation can rent movies. It's almost as if I don't need pay per view cable at all or Blockbuster.
I will definitely be watching more movies at home now.
Dude....Spiderman 4, simultaneous release at the theatre and on Playstation 3. Sweeeeet. Make it happen Sony!
freker @ Jul 17th 2008 10:14AM
I can actually understand this. Tv Network wise, I hope Sony get Channel 4 and the BBC's content onboard.
Stoo @ Jul 17th 2008 10:15AM
This really isn't surprising.
It was bloody ages before the xbox movie service finally came to Europe. Well it felt like ages anyway.
1664 @ Jul 17th 2008 10:17AM
Well at least they have finaly spoke up and mentioned it, took there time though!! 2009 haha what a joke along with possible 2010 for GT lol it just gets worse everyday, sony remind me of Virgin Media aka NTL, heads up there arses plodding along and no thought for the customer im shocked and gutted at what a mess they are making out of this gen
SimplyB @ Jul 17th 2008 10:20AM
And a troll trolls like trolls troll.
Brodie-san @ Jul 17th 2008 10:29AM
I love being European. It's like being the smelly kid at that back of the class that no one wants to sit beside.
HAAS599 @ Jul 17th 2008 11:24AM
europe has red alert 2 on psn, gps for psp, tv for psp, psn cards, buzz, and prolly some other stuff I wish I had in the U.S.
It seems like europeans whine more.
ChodalBerryWagon @ Jul 17th 2008 7:37PM
Hey man, I'm preeetttyy sure we don't have PSN cards here in 'PAL territories'.
Well... at least I haven't seen any.
And we have a right to whine more! lol
Almost everything YOU get WE get at least 2 months later!
and the only time we get special treatment is if something is going to sell INCREDIBLY better in europe than in other regions (Buzz, singstar).
What's more, Sony doesn't even seem to care that the 'others territory' is where they make the most sales!
Mentality @ Jul 17th 2008 10:29AM
What an outrage, we Europeans the biggest backers for sony and yet again we a shit on, why this even comes as a suprise to me I don't know, we should come to expect this kind of treatment.
GoView is the biggest rip off since the Nintendo Wii, they are charging you for content you can watch freely by simply turning on your TV or watching On Demand via you cable tv box or download freely the internet using Iplayer or 4OD. Time limited maybe but FREE is the word here.
Rami @ Jul 17th 2008 10:25AM
I live in the states and when I go into the PS3 Store I can see the icon there for video rentals but nothing happens when I click on it. I can get demos and everything else but the video rentals and all that aren't working.
Am I missing something? Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks.
Decrevecoeur @ Jul 17th 2008 11:04AM
yeah, I tried to check it out last night also. Live in Texas so definitely have a US account. I saw all the normal store buttons and icons and then when I try to click the link to go to the store stuff there's no response. Wasnt sure if I was doing anything wrong either or if there was a problem on their end....was probably about 7ish pm CST.
Decrevecoeur @ Jul 17th 2008 11:11AM
"try to click the link to go to the store stuff there's no response"
meant to say click the link to go to the video store stuff there's no response...fingers dont always type what I meant to say I guess.
Dehshizknight @ Jul 17th 2008 2:56PM
Just an ad, guys. You have to click the video button in the top-left.
Richard Comegys @ Jul 17th 2008 10:28AM
Not good enough for me! I'm in Japan! I wonder when we'll get such a store. If ever. Ah well.
OAKside @ Jul 18th 2008 4:41AM
I thought Japan'd have something better than the PS Store for films. Something on par with Netflix's catalog, but with on-demand HD downloads/streams. And no DRM! Or something WAY cooler. :P
YAFB @ Jul 17th 2008 10:30AM
I don't get why sony focuses so much on the american market, since Europe is the region where they have sold most PS3's... They don't have to convince americans to buy ps3's, they have to convince europeans to keep theirs, if they keep doing it this way.
I bet the pricing will be awful when it finally arrives :P
Catdogburger @ Jul 17th 2008 10:31AM
What about Canada? Is it coming this year for Canada? It Better!

Check out that link.
The store is actually a gyp at the moment IMO. I bought a movie last night and was pissed to find out that I couldn't transfer the movie to an external HDD. I think you can transfer it to the psp and then to your CPU and then to an external HDD, but that is way more work than it should be. If I buy a movie, I should be able to put it on another storage medium. Not only that, if you download a movie and then erase it off your ps3's hdd then you can't re-DL it like you can with games. You have to BUY THE MOVIE AGAIN. That, my friends, is a gyp. They need to fix this ASAP somehow or I will just stick with netflix.
David @ Jul 17th 2008 12:33PM
Hey you should be glad that you're able to transfer the movies to the psp. As much sense as it makes for the movie to be transferable to any storage device once you've downloaded it the truth is the MPAA forces strict DRM into these downloadable flicks so that you can't transfer them. As of know there isn't a single movie download service that would let you transfer movies to any storage device. It's the same as in itunes once it's in your ipod you can't put it in another storage device.
It sucks but that's how it is. I for one think that if I buy a movie I should have the right to put it wherever I want but sadly that's not the case. With the Digital Millenium Copyrights Management Act that congress approved a few years ago these companies have extended their copyrights to heights that don't make much sense to customers. You can't rip a DVD to create a copy of the movie for your PSP because that means you have to break the digital locks and that means violating the DMCA.
At least Sony convinced them to let people transfer the movies to the PSP. Also, some blu-rays are now coming with digital copies for you to transfer to the psp...that means that as piracy continues at least the movies studios seem to be getting wiser and are getting close to offering customers what they really want.
As for not being able to download them again...that sucks.
halebound00 @ Jul 17th 2008 3:32PM
Points well taken David. Piracy has ruined everything for everyone. I guess its a personal choice. I see no reason to pay 15 bucks for a movie on PSN when I can get it from Best Buy for the same price and take it wherever I want to go. A lesser principled person would just do that and rip it and have copies of their own. Sony's gonna have to come up with something a little smarter. I am sure they'll figure something out. Maybe if the (newer) movies were only 10 bucks or less that would give me some motivation to use the service.
David @ Jul 17th 2008 4:56PM
@halebound00
yeah I agree with you, prices should be lower. As it is right now I will never buy or rent a movie through this service. I'm afraid I'll only use it to show my friends how cool the store looks. The thing about this is that Sony Computer Entertainment of America doesn't have much to say about the pricing issue. This is all regulated by the MPAA and if they don't agree that means no movies for your movie service. For Sony to be able to sell movies in their store they must have permission from the copyright holders which are the movie studios. A copyright is not just a right of authorship, it is actually a bundle of rights and the distributions rights are included in it. The copyright owners (which are usually the movie studios and not the authors) are the ones that dictate how their worls will be distributed. Right now the MPAA are some greedy people and they want money that's why they sell these cheap digital copies for almost the price of a blu-ray disc on Amazon.
Steve Jobs tried to have every movie on itunes to be available for 9.99 but he couldn't convince the studios. At first they wanted all movies to be around 19.99 but they at least backed down a little. What we as consumers must do is not buy this type of content and at some point they'll have to lower the prices. Also we must protest and not sit idly as copyright laws get stronger every passing day. Let's find new ways to distribute our works and slap these distribution giants in the face!
cg @ Jul 17th 2008 10:53AM
I'm not sure about everyone else in europe but i'd rather put up with american offering instead of nothing at all instead of having to wait around for content specially tailored to the european market...
And besides, when it comes to europe most countries don't like the same thing anyway.
sephariel @ Jul 17th 2008 10:52AM
well SONY sucks balls, im moving to some other company like Nintendo. SONY is the worst company they dont care about EU they care little about USA and HOME is only a myth and when it will be released it will be releasd only in USA and EU will have to wait again
1664 @ Jul 17th 2008 10:53AM
@ SimplyB
No not a Troll, Just a Very disapointed eu customer
adorna @ Jul 17th 2008 10:59AM
since we probably get the same pricing policy the store uses - $=€ basically (with the current exchange rate being1:0,6 right now) I'm not really anxious to get a subpar video store. And till 09 there are probably a lot of other solutions if you want to buy your films online .. at least some of them webbased.
Sony seem to have a trend to announce things that sound good and then delay them until they're not spectacular anymore.
Eggy @ Jul 17th 2008 11:05AM
Can't we get retard filters on this blog? It's getting annoying.

vasago @ Jul 17th 2008 11:35AM
we really shouldn't be surprised by it .No offence to our US pals
but they get it easy. Games come out quicker they have a bigger range of games and software. They don't pay as much and they have most of atlus's games like persona.odins sphere.to name a few what do we get the table scraps from japan. It's anoying as hell but you can complain all you want but the simple fact is they couldn't care any less than they do now

"That's a long time to wait for all the Europeans out there -- does Go!View provide any consolation? Tell us what you think."
I hope you one day understand that UK is not Europe.
Out of the 731 million people living in Europe, UK counts for 60 million. So no, a product launched in UK does not help Europe that much.
It irks me to no end when something is labeled as "Launching in Europe" when it's actually only for UK...
Sorry, it just gets me kind of annoyed at times.
HAAS599 @ Jul 17th 2008 11:43AM
glad you shared that with us.
So can I have your PS3 since its worthless to you?

OMG this is so unfair, its gone too far now. I dont get how Europe gets away with being treated so unfairly?
ali_D @ Jul 17th 2008 12:01PM
to the post who says uk is not part of europe we are joined 2 the EU and i say joined or not we been let down so many times, and wot of play-tv 4 the ps3 they never said anything and i saw the play-TV in action is it NOW can as well.
matt3224 @ Jul 17th 2008 12:44PM
I hate being treated like a second class customer, it sucks to live in europe
M_G @ Jul 17th 2008 12:59PM
SCEE should completely be ashamed of themselves. We've all payed good fuckin money for out consoles and the games, we expect a service similar if not BETTER to those who payed less for their consoles (americans and others).
Its disgraceful from a company as big as Sony, i'd be embarassed to be working for SCEE.
When i think of them in their offices, i seriously just image a room full of OBESE, unshaven, ugly cunts with boxes of donuts and chicken everywhere. "Yes boss i'll update the store for the EU region.......right after i eat these deliiiicous donuts mmmmmm"
*fast forwards 3 hours*
beeep....beeeep....beepppp....beepbeepbeepbeppbeep...zzzzzzzzz
Thats that fat SCEE cunt dying in hospital from not moving alot in life.
Edd Mills @ Jul 17th 2008 1:17PM
This is hardly surprising. It's very rare that the EU and other parts of the world get anything synonymously with America. It annoys me more though because we in the EU are buying the PS3 far more than in America yet we're still treated like second class citizens. I don't want to hear Sony's bullshit about localization or whatever else they want to tell us to justify not getting these features rolled out to us, if they put the time and money in, they could have had at the very least, movies from Sony's own vault available outside of the States.
mikeyboy @ Jul 17th 2008 1:10PM
well then shove it up ya fat american arses
ali_D @ Jul 17th 2008 2:22PM
i to can see da slobs @ SCEE yes david reeves i will update the eu store, plz david HELP me get up my BIG FAT AZZ from the chair for i am FCKIN STUCK. lol
Fane @ Jul 17th 2008 5:13PM
Well, I'd MUCH rather have TV/DVR functionality than the ability to rent or buy downloaded copies of movies.
Wanna trade?
MCHEVA @ Jul 17th 2008 10:10PM
I guess that means Australia will be getting the big stick up its bumhole as well
