Rumor: Trophies on PSP
This isn't the first time rumors have been going around, but it's the first time we have some real evidence. During a presentation yesterday during E3 for Buzz! Master Quiz, producer Emerson Escobar talked about an in-game medal system, which isn't too surprising for a quiz game.
But then, Escobar begins talking about a "trophy system" where depending on the speed you answer a question, you get a different trophy. When asked if this meant trophies for PSP, Escobar responded with a nervous chuckle and a "check back with us later," without saying anything else.No comments from Sony at this time. But trophies on the PSP seem almost natural at this point, so we are wondering more as to when trophies will be available on our favorite handheld.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Maybe it's just me, but can someone plz explain to me why this is exciting news...?
strike @ Jul 17th 2008 3:13PM
I guess because it gives people targets and you online status would look better, if trophies can be veiwed onine.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Jul 17th 2008 4:18PM
Trophies add an instant replay value to every single game and force you to kind of explore the games you play. It would be cool to have trophies for the PSP but for some reason I really don't see it happening.
But then again I also didn't think the redesign would happen but....yeaaaah.
rikki @ Jul 17th 2008 5:04PM
...I really don't understand why anyone wants this.
I'd rather have more content for my PSP than get fobbed off with "gold star sticker awards for everyone yaaaay!". See, if PSP gets "trophies", 90% of them will be given out for trivial shit anyway. (Actual example of an "Achievement" for the 360 Simpsons game? "Press START to Play"...what?!) That kind of bull doesn't need to take up space on my stick.
Hey Sony, how about f*ck trophies and get PSN on my PSP? Or better yet, how about releasing a commercial PS1 game ripper, since you and the 3rd-parties will NEVER get your acts together and put what I want on PSN? I'd pay for that, even though you'll never do it.
cafecito @ Jul 17th 2008 5:49PM
How about f**k YOU and lemme get some thophies on my PSP?
Jacksons @ Jul 17th 2008 5:55PM
I'm with rikki on this one.
required @ Jul 17th 2008 7:27PM
I agree with rikki as well.
Kspraydad @ Jul 17th 2008 8:03PM
Sony has already laid out that PSN is coming to PSP...likely by year's end.
Re Commercial Ripper: Although a lovely thought SONY HAS enabled PS1 games to be played through remote play if you have a PS3.

I agree with rikki too: I don't think I as competitive than most, and I don't really care if everybody can see my gold medals or lack of.
Alhough The Simpsons game is a piss take about videogames in general, highlighting all the cliches in videogames and making them look ridiculous ('video game cliche #18: the double jump'). I think that giving you a medal for doing the most obvious thing (such as pressing Start) is really funny :-)
Whyser @ Jul 17th 2008 3:53PM
I think this is awesome... achievements on the PSP?! Tied to your PSN account on your PS3?!
No handheld has ever had an achievement/trophy system before. And it would help if you are one of those achievement/trophy whores.
I like the trophy system, it gave me reasons to go back to some games and get more game time out of them. I got all the Super Stardust HD trophies that you can get without the expansion packs.
Whyser @ Jul 17th 2008 4:09PM
Well, Sony did mention in their keynote that they will have a single sign-on or have all accounts tied to the PSN by this fall I believe.
I recently got an email from Sony that would link my Playstation.com profile to my PSN profile. So I don't see why they won't be tying the PSP to your PSN profile in the near future...
NukeAssault @ Jul 17th 2008 4:03PM
That would be pretty cool actually. It would be even cooler if you could sync them with your PS3 trophies. Like how you can do that for games for windows and 360 games.
strike @ Jul 17th 2008 4:03PM
Some of us just dont have the time to acheive these trophies. Have you seen some of the stardust achievements? They require quite alot of training (I dont have a PS3, but I played it with my cousin). Or may be i'm just bad at games.
chigthemnky @ Jul 17th 2008 4:09PM
My only concern is will I have to be online to earn a trophy? I have 2 problems with this if so:
1. Battery life from leaving the Wireless on
2. I use the portability of this system to play where there are no connections ie camping.
Other than these concerns I think it is a great idea
Whyser @ Jul 17th 2008 4:12PM
Well it's not like you're forced to get them in all games. They're just there (like in Super Stardust HD) because if you do something awesome, it'll reflect in your profile tropy status.
If you don't have the time to get them, you can just move on.
Whyser @ Jul 17th 2008 4:14PM
I'm guessing you can "sync" up your trophy status with PSN the next time you log in to the PSN network on wifi.
Just like the PS3, if you're not online, you can collect trophies, and the next time you log into PSN, it will sync all new trophy info to your profile.
strike @ Jul 17th 2008 4:17PM
Sorry if it sounded like I said trophies are a bad thing, thats not what I meant. They are a great extra feature, especially for replaying games, but thats all they are to me. An extra.
PostedOval @ Jul 17th 2008 4:40PM
Achievements on the X360 are a lot of fun. Having something like that on the PSP could be pretty cool...
Alien @ Jul 17th 2008 4:50PM
Thats awesome :D Esspecialy if they incorporate it in games like Resistance or Locoroco/Patapon 2 :)
Jeff Brown @ Jul 17th 2008 7:32PM
I think that if you get a Trophy in a PSP game, while being offline. I think that when you reach a Wi-Fi spot and link to the internet, the PSP should seamlessly update your PSN account to show that you unlocked those Trophies in a PSP game.

These trophies/awards systems are set dressing at best. They are a superficial example that stands true to the empty and callous nature of humans to 'fill' areas devoid of context.
But in an area where superficial examples are king, trophies make good tinder for the feckless, fickle, trite, and omni-belligerent.

... Why even play games then? they are made to fill a void. Or do you think they are a productive way to spend your time?
jesus christ, go talk your emo shit else where

@ Exo:
I can see what you're getting at. Trophies add a level of depth to what can be done with the material provided and so far public statistics says it's a well liked nuance.
When home comes out once it's supported fully - I'm sure each PS3@Home user will have a personal trophy case(s) worth a look and certainly worth a fill.
But unless this ground breaking 'content from other games' thing actually happens, it's a superficial flame taking up another block on my XMB.
With all these new functions happening for PSP and PS3 I hope SONY will initiate a custom XMB right into the systems firmware allowing users to say "No I don't want that button to show up." Trophies might be one of those buttons I'd hide - but whatever the case. The HOME trophy cases are where it's at. I want a virtual plaque for saying my rank in Bad Company. I want a ratchet and clank set of gun statues.
That would be worth it.
That would be engaging.
Some variance in the forms that these trophies appear - if and when these trophies appear fully fleshed out and flushed out in MORE titles with embodiments in HOME, the redundancy that was Set dressing becomes game content and virtual home furnishings.
Can't wait!

You can get achievements offline on the 360 they just aren't time/date stamped. But yeah you should be able to get them offline.
I would imagine most of them would be obtained offline due to the poor power management of WLAN.
