40GB stock running low in anticipation of new 80GB model
A new PS3 SKU will go to sale in Europe on August 27th. Already, the effects of the newly announced 80GB Core model has been affecting the sales stream of the 40GB model. According to HMV's commercial manager for games, stock of the 40GB model is dwindling as retailers prepare for the newly upgraded model. For those interested in picking up a PS3, it appears waiting for the 80GB model next month would be the wise choice.
"40GB stock has been in very short supply over the last few weeks ... PlayStation 3 will now boast a monopoly on Blu-ray, increased storage space and Play TV in the near future," Jonathan Hayes noted. "All this points to a stronger proposition for Sony going into Christmas. The only disappointment was the lack of backward compatibility compared to the US version."

It's nice to see new models but I'm just glad I've got a 60GB and there's nothing in Europe that tops that model yet.
whoelse @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:27PM
Yes i got mine for £349 with 2 games.
zoltari @ Jul 22nd 2008 11:42AM
I have to agree - I am annoyed the 60GB cost so much (I bought the day it launched) but it has so many great bits and bobs the 40GB doesn't have.
I am amazed they only went to 80GB: I would have thought, with the TV recording facilities they will offer soon, they would have gone for 200GB... Maybe that's just me beeing a geek.

ok I'm a bit confused is the 'new' 80, that doesn't have back compatibility only for Europe. Will the 80 in the U.S be phased out?
justice @ Jul 22nd 2008 11:57AM
M, this new 80g model its the same old 40 giga with a new hard drive... So of course that the old 80 gigas that have the all that thing of playing ps1 and ps2 titles will still on market..
hope u have got it..
And sure that i'll be buying this new model, cuz my bro its moving to he's new house and i don't want to be without my gamessssssss
=)
that was really a good E3 news! thanks sony
M @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:01PM
But will the new 80 replace the old 80 in the U.S?
Popfrogs @ Jul 22nd 2008 2:55PM
M: Let me break it down for you.
The current 80GB (Motorstorm or MGS4 bundle) is going away. The current 40GB is going away. The new 80GB is coming out, with no backwards compatibility.
Sony has always said the backwards-compatible 80s were a limited time thing from the beginning. I may snatch up a few at my local Target and sit on them for a few months just in case.
justice @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:11PM
i guess it cant because this new 80g doesnt have all the features that the old 80 have... Its like i said, this new 80 giga its just the old 40 with a new hard drive
nihillasohen @ Jul 22nd 2008 1:57PM
don't forget the dualshock3
LAZoftheTamarinds @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:20PM
I wonder what will happen if my 80 GB BCompatible PS3 gets busted and I have to send it in to sony?
Will I get a refurbished non BC 80GB ps3?
PBone @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:48PM
No you wont get a different model then the one you have. All you do is call sony, they send you a box you send in your ps3 and they repair it. if its passed the period you have i think its 90 days , then you have to pay 150 dollars.
PBone @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:52PM
No, All you have to do is call sony and they will send you a box, and then they will repair it for you. and you get the same system back. Only thing is you might have to pay 150 dollars after your 90 day warranty runs out.
Dwag @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:31PM
Wait now i'm lost so the 40gig is not getting bought because of this new 80gig?
PBone @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:39PM
M,
Jack tretton said in a interview that sony doesnt want B.C anymore because its costing them money and they need to cut back on money making the ps3 to make profit. So most likely 99% every new ps3 wont have B.C or the same features as the older ps3s like the 20,60, and 80 gig and the the new Ps3 will just be like the 40gig but with a bigger harddrive.
farfisa @ Jul 22nd 2008 12:55PM
So are we down to one model come August 27th?
I guess that makes sense--with a user-replaceable hard drive and no BC, there's no reason to have 2.
Still, there's nothing like springing for that premium model ;)
Carney @ Jul 22nd 2008 1:39PM
Don't forget two extra USB ports and support for Super Audio CDs and non-Sony flash memory cards (SD, MMC, CF).
farfisa @ Jul 22nd 2008 1:45PM
Yikes--that's right. I have the 60 gig (well, 320 gig now :) ) and love the extra usb and SD card slot. Forgot those weren't in the 40.
If I didn't have a noisy fan, I'd probably use it for sacd too!
All in the name of price and profit, I guess.

I think Sony will concentrate on software BC development after Home has been finally released. Possibly a 2010/11 firmware update. It would be a bad business move for them not to push PS2 games via PSN at a later date..
Any thoughts?
Popfrogs @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:36PM
Good call. They do have a small group working on PS2 software emulation from what I've heard but it's slow going. The PS2 was a handful of specialty chips and is very tough to emulate.
StingerVI @ Jul 22nd 2008 2:56PM
Can we trade oue 40gb PS3? Considering they're the same price.
Otherwise I feel screwed over by Sony.
SuperDre @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:47PM
Some dutch site claims the new 80GB will not have USB ports on the front (only at the back) and will NOT have a networkconnector anymore (so WiFi only).. I really cannot believe it, especially the last one, how in the hell could Sony be so stupid to ditch the networkconnector on a device which needs to be connected to a network.. I for one don't have a wireless network and am not planning on getting into the hassle of having to buy and secure the bugger (wirelessnetwork), wire work much better, especially if you are living in a flat with a lot of owners who do have wireless..
davidcc90 @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:51PM
well i called sony on friday about my broken 60gig and a courier came on monday with a refurbished 60gig and took my old one away for free(this was after the warranty expired) i think this is great as the 60gig has been discontinued so they probly have spare 80gig ones too,im in the UK by the way dunno how they do it in the rest of the world
alex @ Jul 22nd 2008 10:15PM
I am so glad I got a MGS4 PS3 bundle. It's perfect, blows away my 360, is BC, and I got a $100 gift card with my purchase from Wal Mart. I RULE!!\
StingerVI @ Jul 23rd 2008 5:38AM
Is this 80gb model coming to the states?
robbyp3 @ Jul 24th 2008 6:19AM
I've seen some guys comment about the 90 day warranty...I believe it's one year. I bought mine in November 07 and just had to send it back in June 08...no charge.
thejman @ Aug 4th 2008 5:45PM
r they cutting the price of the 40gb ps3?
