Tekken 6 in December, PS3 exclusivity in question
In a not so recent interview (it has been spotted/in print since April), Haruki Suzaki (project director for Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection) and Ryuichi Enomoto (international sales rep) talk to Filipino gaming mag GamEX Magazine about Tekken 6, which is currently out in arcades. The most important information regarding the game involves Suzaki tentatively revealing that Tekken 6 is due for a December 2008 release worldwide on consoles.
However, when pressed for more information regarding PS3-exclusivity, Suzaki replied "No. It hasn't been determined yet as of the moment ..." The statement -- given how the Tekken series has been strictly placed on PlayStation platforms for the past decade -- raises some eyebrows towards the possibility of Tekken 6 landing elsewhere as well. Suzaki reaffirms that the game is still being primarily developed for the PS3 ... but with that in mind, it sounds like Namco could end up pulling an FFXIII.

So can we expect all those old rumors regarding MGS to show up again?

God I hope so, all my old Tekken rival buddies are on 360 now.

T6 needs to stay on the PS3!!
Averna @ Jul 22nd 2008 11:50PM
I dont see why. As far as Im concerned as long as the PS3 version isnt gimped due to disc sizes or processing power, bring it on.
I got a 360 for its exclusives (Mass Effect, Fable II, Gears of War, etc) anything multiplatform I get for the PS3.
Alex @ Jul 22nd 2008 2:43PM
i wouldn't be surprised if it went multiplatform. it'll offer tekken deeper penetration in West.
Sony's going to have to bolster it's first party exclusives because third party exclusives are running thin.
deaftly @ Jul 22nd 2008 2:43PM
All these "exclusives" are jumping ship because it costs alot more money now a days to make a game, they need to make up for it by putting stuff on both consoles. They know 360 is the place to make money.
Aozora @ Jul 22nd 2008 4:12PM

>They know 360 is the place to make money.
Wrong. Japanese games sell better on PS3.
Arnon @ Jul 22nd 2008 8:49PM
Wrong. The PS3 isn't even the leading console in Japan >.>.. a Japanese game sells better on the Wii lulz. (Damn that Wii..)

Why is this news? Sony has said it does not pay for exclusive 3rd party games. So why is it every time a game comes out multi-plat people get all upset and make it big news. If Sony really cared they'd pay up like M$ does. So if Sony doesn't care why make it a big deal? It's still on PS3 so buy it and play it and be happy.
MakaiOokami @ Jul 22nd 2008 2:55PM
It's not that they don't care... Sony had 3 billion in extra cash when Microsoft had 32 billion laying around. Which company can afford the extra 50 million for this 20 million for that 80 million for those and these... Sony still hasn't made a profit on the PS3 but they expect to start seeing profitability by around march of next year.
deaftly @ Jul 22nd 2008 2:57PM
U$ing dollar $ign$ to replace "S'$" are $o awe$ome
adolson @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:03PM
I think Microsoft is paying for third-parties to go multi-platform, and if that's the case, then third-parties win the most by threatening PS3 exclusivity until Microsoft coughs up the cash, then they can release on PS3 and 360, and they still get paid money from Microsoft as if it were an exclusive. Smart thinking, if that is going on. I have no proof, however, it's Microsoft, and if they were smart, they'd be throwing around their pocket change to make things like this happen.
In the end, I don't really care, as Sony's first/second-party stuff is more meatier and appeals to me more than Microsoft's. I don't care what third-party stuff is multiplatform, as long as I get to play it.
Stoo @ Jul 22nd 2008 4:18PM
@deaftly
M$ is a perfectly valid and well known abbreviation for Microsoft.
It helps alleviate any confusion as to why there are references to an autoimmune condition in a video game discussion.
Gaucho @ Jul 22nd 2008 2:49PM
Never been a big fan of Tekken. I wouldnt mind if Sony would take a 360 exclusive and have them release on both systems at the same time like the next Star Ocean or next Mass Effect. But to be honest though most great games are multi plat now. and LBP and infamous will be PS3 exclusives. I'm not pissed about this as long as it doesnt jeopardize the games quality I hope that this is not the case for FFXIII.
ryan @ Jul 22nd 2008 2:50PM
yeah, i wouldn't be surprised either. with VF5, DMC4 and FF13 multiplat, the words 'exclusive 3rd party title' don't seem to mean so much these days.
Alex @ Jul 22nd 2008 2:56PM
why?
i think it's great that instead of thinking of console divided lines, we look at it as a bigger community of tekken. the fighting game genre (regardless of how it appears) is a small niche community in comparison to other genres. What better thing to happen then have a community become another console bigger?
All I care about is that the game quality doesn't suffer. As long as it's still PS3 bound, we should all be happy.
It's not like we're getting shafted by having them make Tekken an XBox exclusive.
MakaiOokami @ Jul 22nd 2008 2:56PM
I dont' see why it matters. The reason why console games aren't staying exclusive right now is because there is little benefit to doing so.
Microsoft entered late, had issues getting some decent games, etc... Dead or Alive went to the Xbox Shenmue 2 went to the Xbox and not the PS2, stuff like that.
Now that the Xbox 360 has the headstart things are a bit different. Companies don't want to settle for missing out on over 6 million potential sales right now. When the PS3 by itself gets about 30 million consoles... maybe even 40 million... it should have passed up the 360 by then and most games will probably start to be able to be exclusive.
For the most part though most companies aren't being exclusive. Costs are too high no adays. If people focused more on the games that we'll get to play than the politics of what other people get to play we can enjoy ourselves. Sony has better first party exclusives. Banjo Kazooie's little Vehicle platforming probably isn't going to do much for Microsoft, their Avatars are weak, M.A.G. has the potential to blow EVERYTHING out of the water that Microsoft has in FPS and 3rd person, Little Big Planet is like nothing anyone has ever truly experienced before and will be unlimited amounts of fun... We're getting most of the 360's exclusives ported over WITH additional content...
Does it really matter what games only we get to play when we have a stellar lineup? Don't you guys want these companies to make enough money that they can work harder on the next one? If a company fails on a game no adays it's much more expensive. They have to have confident backers in order to make a game great. Otherwise they cut corners. If they release Tekken 6 and realize that the PS3 didn't provide enough sales they might go exclusive on 360.
Who knows what could happen so we have to focus on just getting the games we want. If you don't like the exclusivity you can try petitions but honestly I don't think it'll do much good for another year or 2 when the PS3's numbers have surpassed the 360 and Sony has accomplished what everyone expected of them.

360 sells more in: US/UK
PS3 sells more in: JP/UK/EU
If this rumour is true, this just means the 'console' war is now just down to 'regions'. Its not about the machines or the games anymore.
Nick @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:31PM
How can 360 sell more in UK while the PS3 sells more in the UK at the same time?
stargateheaven @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:00PM
Why do people always say "why wouldn't you want a game multi platform, then everyone can play!"? It's nothing to do with that fact, it's just I don't want my PS3 to become useless!
ryan @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:02PM
1. you are still getting Tekken by owning a PS3
2. making it multiplat is good for Namco, games cost too much these days to risk avoiding multiple markets.
3. the more people play the game, the stronger the community, the bigger chance a Tekken 7 will happen.
pomme @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:02PM
being a FFXIII case is still better than Tales of Vesperia case, right?
maxpontiac @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:03PM
Smart business actually. If I was a dev, I wouldn't make any of my games exclusive to nobody.
How much money are game companies losing because they have sell Gears of War 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4 on their respective consoles?
ALOT!!!
stargateheaven @ Jul 22nd 2008 4:44PM
but sometimes they'd pay you big bucks for exclusiveness
maxpontiac @ Jul 22nd 2008 4:53PM
Agreed. Money makes the world go round.
I just don't see the financial sense in exclusives from a devs standpoint.
Why miss the opportunity to reach another client base?

Mo @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:47PM

Daalyman @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:20PM
Yeah but what they don't get is that if they stayed with
the one's that made them big then it would sell even more
consoles, thus more money.
This costing more for the game is strange since they have
the arcade version out, surely it doesn't take more money
to have it over to the console's then to make it from
scratch for the arcade.
How many arcades do they have overseas anyways?
They must have more then all the consoles combined, to
have made some money.
Who really knows anyways?
Alex @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:26PM
i respectfully disagree. fighting games are not system sellers, at least not compared to other genres.
namco will sell more by going multiplatform than by trying to tough it out with the PS3.
Daalyman @ Jul 23rd 2008 10:58PM
Not a problem.
I don't mind if they go multiplatform.
One of my reasons for getting a PS3
was that it was coming out for it,
remember in the beginning?
It's been what a year and half when they
showed the teaser trailer for the game.
Tho i understand it's still coming to the
PS3, makes me wonder what the graphics
are going to look like for it now.
Namco has the right to make as much
money as they can, nothing wrong in that.
The game better be up to par for all the systems
or else it would not of been a good idea.
Huschke @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:20PM
What's the point of trying to keep it exclusive? Personally I don't care wether or not the XBox 360 gets the same 3rd party games we get.
I'm happy with my PS3 as it is and for me it's more than just a gaming device. It's the center of entertainment in my living room. Wheter I want to stream pictures, movies or music or wether I just want to watch a movie in HighDef (thanks to BluRay), everything is possible on this machine.
And the one big advantage the PS3 will alway have over the 360 is it's free online play and no game can match that in my eyes.
Wait, I forogt something. There is another big big advantage. LittleBIGPlanet, a game my girlfriend e.g. can't wait to play :D
bambino @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:21PM
Who gives a flying *beep*?
I bought my PS3 for the first party titles, Blue-ray player, free online gaming and not having to send my console back every 3 months because it gets the RROD.
Most people here in Europe IMO have bought the PS3 for GT5 and Pro Evolution Soccer series (Nostalgia factor, even tough it's a multi platform game). I could care less about RPG's or JRPG's... If that's what you wanted.. you should have bought a 360.
If you're not happy.. go trade your PS3 for a 360. Nuff said.

adolson @ Jul 22nd 2008 4:07PM
Takken 6 isn't a JRPG, dude.
If you're referring to FFXIII, then well, nobody can really bitch about it since it is still coming to PS3.
Phantom @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:41PM
I would laugh my ass of if Sony starts paying for exclusives next gen . So all the ecxlusives that went multi-plat would return to Playstation . Then the Xbot's will have to buy a PS4(maybe still 3 ) to play all of the games they have come to love FF , Tekken etc .
e.Missark @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:43PM
Here's what is wrong with Microsoft's tactic of paying for time based exclusivity, exclusive downloadable content and paying for games to go multi platform.
It is all about the now and not the future of the console. They are not working on strengthening their 1st party studios. Yes Microsoft has a lot of money but if they keep giving it away like that, what's going to happen when they can't buy out games?
Bryant @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:54PM
lol the only reason that magazine's concerned about the PS3 exclusivity is so 360 owners in the Philippines could buy or just burn a copy to play in their modded 360's. i know, i'm filipino and i was just there a couple months ago. 360, ps2, psp & ds piracy is as rampant as ever.
Brodie-san @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:56PM
Not that bothered if it it's on every console known to man.
I can't imagine playing Tekken on anything but a DualShock. Never got into the sticks and, in-my-humble-but-obviously-biased-opinion, I wouldn't like to play the game with the 360 controller.
I'm also thinking: would MS really bother ponying up cash for this? Would the sales figures justify the price?
ComicShaman @ Jul 22nd 2008 4:57PM
It's even possible that Namco is trying to seduce Microsoft here into paying them to go multiplatform. I consider that as a highly possible side effect to Microsoft's recent spending frenzy in paying for exclusives and multiplatform deals. Now the other franchises are sending signals: "Hey, look over here, baby! You want some of this, don't you? I hear you're a big spender..."
I mean, it might be in Namco's best interest to go multiplatform and reach a larger audience... but if they can get some gravy on top of that from Microsoft, why not try?
Mattchewie @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:59PM
I personally don't care if a title is multiplat IF there are actually teams of people a pointed to ensure it comes out 1 for 1. We see a lot of shotty ports and thats what makes me angry.
If I was sony I would be making damn sure that the first parties are cranking out quality. I loved them all so far but I wouldn't say they have a Halo or GOW on their hands yet. If existing first parties can't do that, I would start talking to some 3rd parties about developing a great exclusive IP. Its hard to put this same kind of "they are stealing from us" pain on MS...since their heavy hitters are on their back porch.
CS @ Jul 22nd 2008 4:12PM
"it would be ashame if it's just exclusive to the ps3 console"-- the freaking guy is a jack ass, he has no idea that the ps3 needs an identity with exclusives, its why it's always look down upon by most people. Ps3 needs this to get people to go and get a ps3. With ps3 losing exclusives, its harder for people to look to or play the ps3. And dont get me wrong I strongly believe that all people should play the same game they would like, but like I said, if Sony wants to keep people buying the ps3, they need to keep these exclusives. Tekken 6, I hope is one of the few exclusives that will stay with Sony to help them to success in the gaming market.
Aozora @ Jul 22nd 2008 4:26PM
The PS3 is selling better than the 360 worldwide, so I don't know how you can say it's looked down upon by most people.
CS @ Jul 22nd 2008 5:45PM
Aozora, sorry how i said "looked down by most people", i forgot to mention that most people in the US look down on it, other countries its doing fine, but in the US I think Xbox is their choice of console, mainly because microsoft pays to be on top in the US.
Bryant @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:56PM
Like I said earlier, the most likely reason he said that is because due to the fact that the 360 is pretty much dominant in the Philippines cause of the rampant game piracy - which we all know is only possible on the 360.. for now. So in a way, piracy-proofness is actually bringing the PS3 down and helping the 360 a lot - especially in most 3rd world countires, I would imagine.
