Deal: R-Type Command for $19

It didn't take long for Atlus' R-Type Command to go to the bargain bin. The Irem-developed SRPG had a great Advance Wars vibe, but for many, going away from the series' arcade legacy kept them disinterested. Well, the game is now 50% off its original price on amazon.com. You can pick it up for $19, plus shipping.

It's enjoyable in its own right though, I recommend the game to anyone who likes turn based tactics games. While I enjoy shmups, I wasn't fazed by R-Type's dramatic genre shift because I'd never before played an R-Type game.

More love for R-Type. I wrote a brief tips & tips thread on their company forum, for any new buyers.

Definitely a great game for those who want turn-based. Load times are a chore when selecting missions and such, but in-mission you can eliminate them by turning off animations (you shoudl watch at least one animation in every type of environment, and capital ship animations are always a thrill). The gameplay is very deep as every unit has tons of capabilities (multiple weapon loadouts, multiple ranges and power levels per loadout, etc). One ship can have five or six different weapon choices available at any one time. Elevates the game far above the simple rock-paper-scissors concepts of many similar games.

Why in the hell did they had to release this for 40$ anyways . When games like Patapon start out at 20$ its expected that a game like this will bomb ...

For my $40 I don't think I've bought a game in years that actually provided the value I expected from the cost. R-Type Command has been in my PSP for months and at $20 I hope even more people give it a chance. It really is a wonderful strategy game with its own modest little twist in the story.

I really liked the way this game looked, but had been putting off picking it up since I had a backlog of other games... but I just couldn't pass up a $19 game I really was looking forward to anyway... and from amazon no less, so I get free shipping (thanks to Prime membership).
