Heavy Rain's David Cage has strong faith in PS3
David Cage likes to talk a lot -- especially when 'Uncanny Valleys' are involved. So, it shouldn't come as surprise to see a seven page discussion with the Heavy Rain developer over at Gamasutra. Cutting down to the most relevant bits, Cage solidified Quantic Dream's decision to develop solely for PS3: "Honestly, working on one platform is the best thing we could dream of, and it's a choice."
This little bit of news is a nice reassurance that Heavy Rain will remain a PS3 exclusive, as recent mentions of other 3rd party exclusives have been found to have their exclusivity in question, or outright gone. Further backing up his adherence to PS3, Cage had this to say: "You say it's a limited audience -- yeah, it's true at the moment, but by the end of the PlayStation 2, I think there are 120 million units in the world, so I don't call that a limited market. There's no reason why the PlayStation 3 can't reach these numbers."
In other news, the rest of the interview is a good read if you want to get a piece of Cage's mind. Here's one interesting quote where he praises Uncharted but also criticizes game development structure: "[Uncharted] gives you a bit of story, then action, then a bit of story, then action -- like porn movies, when you think about it. Porn movies are structured in exactly the same way, except that the action is not the same (laughter), but it's the same structure. Most video games are done like that." Read the rest of it here.

Keep in mind, another reason why it won't ever come to the 360 is that Sony and Quantic dream are in a 2nd party partnership right now. Sony probably is funding the entire development of Heavy Rain, along with paying for a brand new mocap studio at QD. The mocap studio will probably see a lot of use for SCEE developed games too.
blahblahbloo @ Jul 25th 2008 8:05PM
I'd just like to add that developer opinions never guarantee exclusivity. The decision is more often in the hands of the publisher, and when the publisher decides whether or not to port the title, they're just going to compare the expected cost of porting with the expected increase in revenues.
adolson @ Jul 25th 2008 3:59PM
I wonder if overweight pluviophiles will be taking offense to the title of this game and posting riotous blogs about it...
SimplyB @ Jul 25th 2008 4:15PM
Fat rain should be loved not made fun of. LoL!
Popfrogs @ Jul 25th 2008 6:16PM
It's not fat rain, it's chubby rain. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0131325/
frankym @ Jul 25th 2008 4:19PM
Man....everybody is going nuts over this game.....can't wait!!!
ModeMan101 @ Jul 25th 2008 4:21PM
Makes me want to pick up a used copy of Indigo Prophecy and play it again...
The_Punisher @ Jul 25th 2008 4:31PM
and just so you know, the game is still amazing, and one of my top favorites. I love the way it's done.
Autopsy15 @ Jul 25th 2008 4:32PM
Everyone? This is the first new bit of news on it in months.
I have no idea what this game is about (hopefully it's not about casting roles for a movie :P) but it looks beautiful and that's pretty much all I need.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Jul 25th 2008 5:37PM
The trailer was basically a proof of concept that they can create life-like characters utilizing the PS3's power. Also, the trailer featured some amazing acting from the woman who played the girl in the trailer. So that's part of the reason why everyone is so excited to see what the final product is.
NotoriousB-O-B @ Jul 25th 2008 4:36PM
I havnt really followed it at all.... what kind of game is it?
Ayman @ Jul 26th 2008 1:37PM
Well if you look closely you would notice that they are talking about porn movies that are like games which are like heavy rain but are porn structurally
hope that made it clear
Tsion @ Jul 25th 2008 4:46PM
Well, if my Sherlock Holmes powers of deductions are keen and on point today, I would say the game is about. . .people/rain.
-Or-
A new next-gen Phoenix Wright mystery to solve a murderer, who's calling cards/murder weapon is origami cranes.
Stay tuned for more assumptions.
MexicanTerrorist @ Jul 25th 2008 4:52PM
Definitely going to be about some killer who uses origami in some form during his murders.
They already said that the casting has nothing to do with the game's plot.
I'm guessing that the rain part is symbolism for a running theme throughout the story, considering how much emphasis they're putting on it.
Jon Acheson @ Jul 25th 2008 5:01PM
The other reason why games are structured as story, action, story is that video games are now expected to take many hours to complete, more than any normal person would do in one sitting. So it is only natural to structure them episodically.
Mike @ Jul 26th 2008 1:56PM
Even games back on the NES were story, action, story, and many of those games could be beaten in under a half hour.
mat parker @ Jul 25th 2008 5:01PM
Yeah David I imagine SCEE published games will remain PS3 exclusive
Gambit07 @ Jul 25th 2008 5:05PM
I'm guessing the casting chick will make a cameo in the game.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Jul 25th 2008 5:33PM
More like a cumeo.
Hey oh!! :D
Gambit07 @ Jul 25th 2008 5:59PM
I'm sure you "wood" like that.
benny boy @ Jul 25th 2008 6:36PM
She's the main character isn't she?
Gambit07 @ Jul 26th 2008 1:10AM
Apparantly she's not, they were using her to show off their tech.
Scilent @ Jul 25th 2008 5:30PM
Very excited about this game. The full interview is really good and I recommend people with time check it out.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Jul 25th 2008 5:34PM
That is the first time I have ever heard someone compare Uncharted to porn....and it makes absolute sense.
Popfrogs @ Jul 25th 2008 6:25PM
Maybe that's why MGS4 was so good, it was porn-o-riffic in structure as well. Action, story, action, story, action, story story story story credits. Still loved it.
Vii @ Jul 25th 2008 7:18PM
Personally I don't see why the analogy can't be extended to all entertainment. I mean just look at the Matrix: Revolutions. Now that was a terrible porno. I never beat Indigo Prophecy when I had it on my PC. Was a cool game but it managed to creep me out. That game was like a $60 acid trip.
Michael @ Jul 25th 2008 6:47PM
Heavy Rain news is good, the sooner they get that done the sooner they'll get to Omikron 2!
kentuckyfried @ Jul 25th 2008 6:48PM
lol @ Uncharted to porn analogy.
That was so random....
Maybe that's why MGS4 wasn't a perfect 10. All action the first half, all talk the 2nd half. =D
Dwag @ Jul 25th 2008 8:53PM
Wow after reading the comments, its just amazing how you fanboys are willing to hype and get excited when you barely know anything about the game :(
Anyways on topic played Indigo Prophecy and it was fun hopefully this game gets released on one platform and i already added to my PS3 checklist so hopefully I won't have to reconsider that.
HanzoTheRazor @ Jul 25th 2008 10:16PM
mmm... Uncharted 2, mmm... porn.
HanzoTheRazor @ Jul 25th 2008 10:17PM
mmm... Heavy Rain.
HanzoTheRazor @ Jul 25th 2008 10:31PM
I am very happy that Sony has followed Nintendo and pimped out thier 1st & 2nd party developers. One thing's for sure, Japanese companies really know about games. Now we have very strong, beefy and quality Sony development teams and it's startin' to really show. If u look at M$, they have gone a very different way and spent all their money on unloyal 3rd parties and now have almost no 1st games to show for the 360, not good for their future. With all these "must have" titles comming, it is going to be difficult for me to even get to my Wii or 360. About time Sony, keep em' commin' baby!
Dwag @ Jul 26th 2008 2:32AM
Obviously HanzoTheRazor you're a fanboy. The excuse 'M$ has no gamez for teh future' is dumb and lame and plus the majority of your comments are biased MS and wacking off Sony. Fanboys always say that yet when MS shows there 09 line up all these fanboys begin to look stupid. all thse supposed "must haves" are either generic or can be gotten on some other system. I don't have to explain any further do I?
Frastoglegnia @ Jul 26th 2008 6:45AM
I'm more concerned with the result than the platform. If niche devs get moneys to continue with grand concepts despite not having made monoliths of money in the past, then that's to Sony's credit. No gamer concerned with artistic content would malign or discredit any company for nurturing the likes of Fumito Ueda and David Cage.
I'm displeased with Sony for their CP schemes, wretched customer service and convoluted programming architecture, but it isn't necessary that I be a fanboy to give them props when merited. In the case of supporting Cage, the praise has been earned.
jan l @ Jul 31st 2008 11:44AM
this game ONLY FOR PS3!!! I HATE YOU SONY!!
farfisa @ Jul 26th 2008 12:53PM
Whenever I see "the Origami Killer" I think it's a joke, like a play on "Halo Killer." Like "this game's so good, nobody's going to want to make origami anymore!"
How's that for a context effect!
janko @ Jul 27th 2008 3:13PM
this is realy bad!! this game must be for PC! I like Quantic Dream but this is realy bad!
Tsion @ Jul 28th 2008 9:40AM
Hmmm, my senses are telling me this game will inevitably be all about. . .making. . . origami shapes with the six axis controller.
The plot is to not kill yourself in the process of beating all 500 levels of difficulty ending with Kamiya Statoshi's Phoenix with a time limit!
matthew cobb @ Jul 28th 2008 11:34AM
i think this game is going to be more like viva pinata. come on origami killer... pinata killer they are basically the same thing. we will run around as a origami swan killing and consuming origami frogs or something like that
matthew cobb @ Jul 28th 2008 12:01PM
oh i forgot to mention hiding from rain. because then you get all soggy and fall apart.
