Soulcalibur IV hands-on: The first few hours

Gallery: Soulcalibur IV
First up, let's discuss the install. The most important piece of information is that it is completely optional. There's no need to install, but it certainly doesn't hurt to go ahead and do it anyway -- it's only 2.6GB and will only take about 10 minutes of your time. You can install/uninstall from the options menu. The most noticeable area that benefits from the install is the load time for loading the fighting stage. Without it, you'll have to wait roughly 30 seconds on average for the stage to load up; with it, you save some time as it only takes less than 10 seconds for a stage to load. Another area is in character creation mode where character models will take several seconds to load without the install; they will load almost instantaneously with the install.
Now, let's talk about rumble. Yes, there is no rumble in the PS3 version, but this exclusion isn't really detrimental to the gameplay experience. The lack of rumble is hardly noticeable; we've been enjoying the game for several hours before we even found out that the controller wasn't rumbling. We were too busy checking out the new combat elements such as destructible equipment and critical finish.
Speaking of which, equipment and weapons can give bonuses to a character in story mode and in special versus battles. Targeting an area (high, mid, low) may cause a piece of armor to break making the character lose their bonus. The effects of equipment destruction, while tactical, also has a nice visual appearance. You can see some pieces literally break off and even remain on the fighting stage floor. The fighting overall is just fast and fluid and plays a lot like Soulcalibur II.
Character creation is a pretty meaty section. You have up to 50 slots for created characters or modifications of current characters (meaning canon characters with special weapons and equipment). Character creation is a good mode, but we do have a slight problem with it. The menus are a tad cumbersome as you'll have to go shuffle through several before getting to where you need to go.
Online multiplayer is a standard affair. There are ranked and unranked matches. An interesting bit is that you can host unranked matches with up to four players. This means that only two players fight at a time, while the others watch and wait their turn; it' not two-on-two battles. There is a lag at times; of course it depends on who you're playing against. You'll see a signal strength bar on various screens letting you know who has the best connectivity, so you could most likely avoid that problem if you pick and choose your opponent.
So what about Vader? He's pretty good, although he is pretty slow. The Apprentice, however, is wickedly fast. Vader is available right from the get go, and you'll need to unlock The Apprentice by using Vader in Arcade mode. The five anime-designed characters are unlocked by defeating them in Story mode. We're just laying out that information in case anyone wants some help completing their character collection -- you can collect them all in a day, really.
On a minor note, the game has already been patched (v1.01). It's a small install at 16MB. Anyway, that's it for now. We're still going to try out some of the other areas. If you've got any questions, just leave us a comment and we'll try to answer it.

been playing since last week, what an incredible game. it kills SC 2 and 3 by a mile. can't wait to see everyone online.
marauder800 @ Jul 28th 2008 3:26PM
I've had this for a week as well, and its been a lonely week. Let's bring those servers online.
The install time is closer to 17 minutes, but well worth it!
themissing @ Jul 28th 2008 3:35PM
agreed...very lonely. feel free to add me THEMISSING on PSN.
Paul (PSN: heypaul) @ Jul 28th 2008 4:20PM
Feel free to add me as well (PSN: heypaul). I'll have it by tomorrow.
Also, any word on how the framerate/resolution are? I felt pretty burned after getting the "superior" verison of GTAIV only to find that the resolution was subpar and the framerate was horrendous.
themissing @ Jul 28th 2008 5:04PM
it's smooth as butter man, don't worry.
Alex @ Jul 28th 2008 2:35PM
gah! i dropped the money for the HRAP3, solely for the purpose of playing this on my PS3.
but, i'm so short on funds right now. i'm gonna have to sit this one out for a little bit.
themissing @ Jul 28th 2008 2:43PM
picked up that stick yesterday. absolutely love it. i dig the fact that i can rest my left palm on it without being all cramped. def. worth the $$$.
Emophia @ Jul 28th 2008 3:27PM
I really want a HRAP3: AV (I think teh HRAP3 is ugly).
But shipping is so pricey when importing...
Alex @ Jul 28th 2008 3:37PM
@ themissing
welcome to the club. i have an HRAP2 that i use to play Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike. i knew that the HRAP3 would be just as good... since they're pretty much the same in terms of arcade hardware. haha.
@ Emophia
yup yup... that Amazon version is a pretty sexy piece.
if i knew i wasn't going to get into modifying my stick to my tastes, i would have bought that and stuck with it.
i know importing is a pain. but take the plunge, please!

also "Character creation is a good mode, but we do have a slight problem with it. The menus are a tad cumbersome as you'll have to go shuffle through several before getting to where you need to go."
could be because of the INSANE amount of customization you can do. cmon now. from the headbands, to the color of each little piece of EVERYTHING, to the fighting style, the weapons. of course the menu is going to be a bit cumbersome. i'll take cumbersome because of content any day.
sinergy @ Jul 28th 2008 2:38PM
I hate you. Went to Futureshop hoping they would release it a day early ..... bah :(
vahdyx @ Jul 28th 2008 2:46PM
I want gamefly to send it to me, I don't want to buy it, fighting games tend to lose it's fun after the first hour for me.

Question -
In the Custom fighter section, when we create our fighters can we use a lightsaber as our weapon?
Danny F. @ Jul 28th 2008 2:55PM
No rumble?? @%@#%.. oh well, hopefully they patch that in the future.
My question is simple..... is Kratos in it :-D??
I know,,, he's not.. but I wish he was.
My question was asked though just now, but can you use a lightsaber in c.c. mode?
frankym @ Jul 28th 2008 2:56PM
Rental city for me
jibbyville @ Jul 28th 2008 3:06PM
no rumble?, that is kind of a deal breaker for me, im sure its an awesome game and all and I'm probably still going to buy it....darth vader yo!, but I can't stand these (new) non rumble games, it seems like they screwing us over .........hopefully theres a patch later or something.
Nate @ Jul 28th 2008 3:03PM
Is there voice chat in online? If so, how's the quality? Any problems connecting to anyone (aside from the aforementioned lag)? Are their rooms online so you can just play with your friends if you want?
Mattchewie @ Jul 28th 2008 3:05PM
I'm not usually picky but no rumble??? The DS3 has been out for some time now and even longer in Japan...soo...I don't see why it wasn't included.
Hopefully GF sends me this game, however they seem to send me games I don't want to play at the time. For example, since I had a bit of down time in the PS3 arena, I wanted them to send me Kain and Lynch...but no, I get the last on my list puzzle quest for psp. Right now I have more than enough to play and then some for the psp between GTALCS, GTAVCS, SOCOM, FFCC, PATAPON, GOWCOO and even space invaders extreme.
Mattchewie @ Jul 28th 2008 5:06PM
Nope, I don't agree. Its 2008 and rumble has been out for years now. Most ps2 fighting games have rumble...don't see why a ADVANCED next gen title doesn't have it. I'm not saying I'm not going to get the game, I'm just saying that if you can say "Its a fighting game, it doesn't need it"....why even have rumble in any game at all! Cause IMHO...no game NEEDS it....however its now an assumed standard.
Nate @ Jul 28th 2008 3:05PM
Ahh "backup copies". That's what's going to make the 360 obsolete as piracy starts becoming more popular and fewer and fewer games are actually bought by the 360 crowd. Then, developers will put the priority on the PS3 version, since at least we pay for the games.....
Not saying it'll happen over night... but it's happening with the PSP, it can happen with the 360 as well.
TheSh0wstopper @ Jul 28th 2008 3:07PM
NO RUBLE????
It doesn't matter if it is necessary or not. What matters is that rumble has been in controllers for a while now. Dev's have known about rumble for close to a year now. So for NAMCO, a 3rd party with a strong history of working on PS consoles, to release a game of this calibur (no pun intended) missing such a feature is very sad. Come on guys and stop being lazy.

Emophia @ Jul 28th 2008 3:29PM
360 version doesn't have rumble either.
It's a fighting game, it doesn't need rumble...
Majed Athab @ Jul 28th 2008 3:14PM
Answer to some questions:
Lightsaber in CC - So far, none. I've unlocked all characters and it looks like only the fighting styles you can use are the regular ones. There are 25 styles.
Kratos - Nope. But you could make him in character creation, and it would look so life like.
Trophies - Unfortunately not. The "Battle Records" in the game could have easily been transformed into Trophies though...
Voice chat/Online - yeah there is headset support. I've only heard one guy and he was speaking a foreign language, and I could hear him pretty clearly... as well as everyone else in the background...
Yes, you can make things private for you and your friends, though I haven't gotten into this because no one else that I know has the game!
Nate @ Jul 28th 2008 4:01PM
Thanks for the answers! :)
Danny F. @ Jul 28th 2008 4:46PM
I love you Majed (-;
Thanks for the update!
Neuromancer @ Jul 28th 2008 3:33PM
I'm going to take a pass on this one. Next time no Star Wars stuff please. It's like pizza and ice cream, as Lazlow would say.
Danny F. @ Jul 28th 2008 5:07PM
Sooo your passing the game because it has guess char. from Star Wars???
You do realize you can choose who you play as right???.....
If your gonna pass the game at least give a logical reason and not something that technically makes no sense....
Danny F. @ Jul 28th 2008 5:01PM
Your not forced to play as them so I dont get your reason for passing this game....
Wanna give a better or logical reason as to why your really passing this game up???
Danny F. @ Jul 28th 2008 5:11PM
Sorry for dbl comments: comment system went crazy
Neuromancer @ Jul 28th 2008 5:32PM
It just annoys me enough that I don't want the game. Sure you can chose not to be Vader, Yoda or "Starkiller" or whatever his name is, but you're going to see them when you fight against them.
Opinions don't have to be logical, I'm not on the high school debate team after all.
creyes4182 @ Jul 28th 2008 3:17PM
Its because of people like you that ps3 will eventually end up on top of the 360.
Karamo17 @ Jul 28th 2008 3:17PM
what in hell happened to rumble, and i can tell that there are no trophies.
themissing @ Jul 28th 2008 3:21PM
if you need rumble to enjoy a fighting game, you're whhhack.
themissing @ Jul 28th 2008 3:24PM
lol..yeah, that's a real advantage. show the world you need to get a job while you rip people off. then post about it. the funny thing is, just like the people above just stated, you're going to end up killing the 360 lol.
Emophia @ Jul 28th 2008 3:28PM
360 version doesn't have rumble either...
Carlton @ Jul 28th 2008 3:48PM
It's a fighting game, it doesn't need rumble...
Emophia @ Jul 28th 2008 4:09PM
Exactly.
This guy knows where it's at.
HektikLyfe @ Jul 28th 2008 4:50PM
I think the fact that you had to answer that question so many times proves that you do INDEED need rumble.
If you want to be anal and quibble about the definition of "need" then lets be even more.
Does a fighting game "need" audio? There aren't really any audio effects that you "need" in order to play the game. Everything can be done visually.
But would that be an enjoyable experience? Not as much. Whether you care about rumble or not is your opinion which from the looks of it is the minority here.
I have enjoyed the rumble features in games since force feedback made its appearance in the arcades. It adds so much to the game it is a shame they took a step back like this. Even Sony ate crow, why won't Namco?
Emophia @ Jul 28th 2008 5:43PM
Because the people that care most about this game will be playing it with arcade sticks.
Which don't rumble.
So it doesn't matter.
Deuce @ Jul 28th 2008 3:31PM
Any real gamer knows that the definitive weapon-based fighter was, and is, Samurai Shodown. Soul Calibur IV is only noteworthy for the creation mode.
Those who disagree are welcome to partake of my gastric juices.
Gervin @ Jul 28th 2008 3:33PM
Rumble, I can take or leave.
I can't tell you how many times I've played my PS2 with a logitech wireless controller, and didn't realize until hours later that I forgot to hit the MODE button to turn rumble on. It's a gimmick for most games.
thinkofmeasmra @ Jul 28th 2008 3:35PM
iunno if i'd buy a new game that doesnt has rumble....i'd feel like i purchased old school game. What a stupid move by namco though, i dont get it. Meanwhile the stupid crapbox 360 probably has rumble....sigh..
Gaucho @ Jul 28th 2008 3:39PM
the 360 doesnt have rumble for this game.
why is rumble so important to some people? especially on a damn fighting game.
on a racing game i would understand.
Gaucho @ Jul 28th 2008 3:36PM
sucks you cant use lightsabers on CC but its whatever. would have been awesome to make our own jedis and sith lords (nerdiness overload!)
The_Punisher @ Jul 28th 2008 3:39PM
So the 360 version doesn't have rumble either? WTF, i wanted it :(
It seems that this game is still lacking basic features. Maybe next time (seems they releease 1 game/gen now).
(and NO: crappy wii spinoffs do not count as games)
Emophia @ Jul 28th 2008 3:49PM
Rumble is not a basic feature for a fighting game.
It;s an unneeded feature.
Do people ever complain that fighting games in teh arcades don't rumble?
I'm gonna be using an arcade stick for this game anyways.
You lamers are such a bunch of whiners.
finelicker @ Jul 28th 2008 3:39PM
Is there a story mode like the old dreamcast version?
flynn110 @ Jul 28th 2008 3:51PM
is there a team battle vs mode?? please say yes
