Firmware update 2.42 now available

An unexpected treat for PS3 owners appeared on the PSN tonight. Firmware 2.42 is now available for download. We're currently in the process of downloading and installing the update, but rest assured that we'll have full details soon. ~~(We're guessing it'll be Life With PlayStation, promised to arrive by the end of the month.)~~

Update: Looks like our guess was wrong. There doesn't appear to be anything new on the XMB. Perhaps this is just another "stability" or "security" update. We'll update again if we find out more.

Update #2: The official word: "This update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software." A bit underwhelming? Perhaps.

THe update is extemely slow...Is it availiable else where so I can update via usb....gesss....

Not even a update in background option, so I could at least play....DAMN IT "error occurred during the download operation...."....grrr....I might as well call it a night...

After the update, I was able to choose what portion of a picture to display as wallpaper (zoom, etc).

Is it just me? Or perhaps I've been sleeping in a cave....

You mean Thursday, when they always update the PSN? Life With Playstation sounds more like something you download off PSN than something integrated into the XMB- I'm betting this update is in preparation for that.

Maybe i'm "mis-remembering" but did the old updates ask for the permissions and accepts before or after the download? and it looks like there's an auto shut off feature..
Finally I can let it update and go to sleep.. instead of waiting for the download, accepting, then waiting for it to install..

First Comment! Btw 50 bucks says it'll fix minor stability issues and that's it. Haha. Don't ask too much of Sony, we just got the biggest update of our life(2.40) so don't get pissed when it does pretty much nothing.

Me too Itchy im waiting for a couple of days as well , mine was bricked with that last update and i had no PS3 for a week untill a mate came around and reformatted the Hardrive for me.

does anyone else think that the in-game xmb is a bit sluggish (animation, ect.)

I've noticed it does that when the game is loading or working hard in the background. Paused games put less stress on the XMB.

I'm guessing 2.42 will fix the BFBC freezing and maybe the bluetooth mic issues, not sure what else since Sony is always super vague with these point updates.
