PSP camera unlikely to come to US
Although GPS will be coming to American systems by this holiday season, one other peripheral may not see the light of day. The PSP camera seems unlikely to come to the US, due to its low capabilities. According to Siliconera, a SCEA representative told them that the 1.3 megapixel camera peripheral simply isn't powerful enough to compete against other devices, such as camera phones. Unless there are actual EyeToy games to support a PSP camera, there's very little reason to bring the camera over to the US.
For now, it appears that those interested in getting the PSP camera will have to import Chotto Shot.

Take it off my xmb!
tjklick2 @ Jul 29th 2008 9:05PM
Here here. I hate clicking the non existant camera icon I'm rushing to select photos.
Don @ Jul 29th 2008 9:32PM
"Jacksons said...
Take it off my xmb!"
I hear that! Wish Sony did too, but I hear it. Still, for those who want to import the camera & use it, I suppose having it on the XMB is important to them.
Can the camera still be used without the XMB icon? If so, then the camera icon should go the way of the IR in the next update.

lol that's exactly what i was gonna say. i hate looking at the camera option and accidentally clicking on it when i want to show people some pictures. they should at least provide an option to take it off, cause i hate looking at it. they dont put the 1seg option on there, so why include this?
txa1265 @ Jul 29th 2008 9:10PM
Well THAT is a real bummer ...
lorddshadow @ Jul 29th 2008 9:11PM
then why the f**k is it on the freakin xmb?!
pat1202003 @ Jul 29th 2008 9:15PM
Then why don't they make a more powerful PSP camera that is better than the other one.
Maverick Saturn @ Jul 29th 2008 10:26PM
That logic is waaaay too advanced :)
Hashbrown Hunter @ Jul 30th 2008 12:48AM
More advanced than at least a 2 megapixel? I think not good sir!
aldo @ Jul 29th 2008 9:25PM
I imported one and I was really disappointed with the poor quality of the images and video captured with the Chotto shot. If it does not come to America, we should celebrate the good decision of SCEA.
omgitsthepope @ Jul 29th 2008 9:28PM
well you can always import one if you guys want it that badly idc really i never looked foward to it but it is disapointing for alot of psp users in america.
Dionisio @ Jul 29th 2008 9:28PM
Don't forget MyStylist! My girlfriend imported the clothes management "game" when it came out in Japan and the camera came bundled with it. It really is a piece of garbage, all 1.3 megapixels of it. Now, if there were any games that made real use of it maybe I'd have gotten more than 10 minutes use out of the thing.
bryanson @ Jul 29th 2008 9:29PM
maybe you can take this as a sign to redesign the camera and make a new one that can stream live like a webcam and couple that with skype and you got a must own. i would love to be able be to hear and see someone using my psp.
Joe @ Jul 29th 2008 10:06PM
I hope Sony does bring the Camera to the US. But make it more powerful at the same time. I could see Sony making some really cool Eye Toy like games using it. Plus like other people have said what was the reason of having it on the XMB if it is not going to get used. I just hope Sony does not add it to the PSP 3.00 with GPS too. Because then I would have to buy another PSP just for that feature. So I hope it does come out in the US just with some added stuff under the hood.
player54 @ Jul 29th 2008 10:12PM
I have it, it really does take good pics just in the day plus u can record videos.
Maverick Saturn @ Jul 29th 2008 10:30PM
It sucks, I've used it, and basically, my sony ericsson takes better photos and records longer videos in much better quality, god only knows why they haven't improved on it yet, if my phone, so small as it is compared to my PSP can store so much, then why can't a simple camera accessory be at least 3 mega pixel, I don't mind if it has a wire connected to the top or something, but really, any temptation to pick it up at the shops when I see it is lost.
naxe @ Jul 30th 2008 12:03AM
well if you think about it....... if sony makes a more powerful camera it will cost more. i heard the gps was around &199 and at that price i dont see many people buying it.
so a more powerful camera would likely cost you $60-$150 and if you ask me that's way too much.
and the icon isnt that much of a bother to me. but i guess thats just me.
andwhyisit @ Jul 30th 2008 1:11AM
Doesn't bother me either.
Pilch @ Jul 30th 2008 4:30AM
The icon doesn't bother me either, but I think that icons for 'extras' should appear only when they are plugged to the PSP, just as the icon for a memory stick appears when you insert it.
Anthony @ Jul 30th 2008 1:23AM
you can actually still use the camera without the camera icon in photo,
using go!edit you can take videos and pics and edit them right on your psp.
but with go!edit i believe you can only shoot 15 second videos, as with the camera option in the xmb, you can shoot as long as you want.
Anthony @ Jul 30th 2008 1:28AM
well, i ordered a camera, and i think i'll be using the camera in the xmb for quickness, and i wil use the go!messenger to edit quickly. because i'm like that.
legendarybod @ Jul 30th 2008 2:35AM
FOOLS.. just order is off of play-asia or ebay.. you can download the go edit software in english for free... get a brain, its not the end of the world.. stop being lazy
LM2007 @ Jul 30th 2008 10:20AM
You dumb, no everyone want to risk waste their money on ebay or online thinking if the camera get lost or something. Actually i preffer to buy those kind of things in person not as a umd game that is cheap.
UltraBabe @ Jul 30th 2008 3:24AM
The damn SKYPE uses the camera... in EUROPE. I read that the camera was coming here to facilitate video chat using Skype. Now they say it isn't? Way to go Sony. Keep pushing your customers around and breaking promises.
LM2007 @ Jul 30th 2008 10:20AM
Not coming to EU? i am very Disappointed with this move if it's true because i was hoping for this so long and a device that really wanted for my psp, more than the GPS stuff.
Alien @ Jul 30th 2008 11:13AM
Dont be upset ... you are not missing much :?
NoBullet @ Jul 30th 2008 1:57PM
I dont see how a GPS add on will target their demographic more so than a camera. No one's going top buy a GPS over a camera. Sony is backwards.
conor @ Jul 30th 2008 7:16PM
bring a damb 3 mp one here then!
antgarcia62 @ Jul 31st 2008 12:54AM
A new addition to the list.
1) NA Game Releases non-existent
2) GPS in 9 months
3) Software updates non the better
4) -NO CAMERA-
Gosh, does SCEA want us to be entertained on the go?!?
gameyeeeah @ Jul 31st 2008 2:01AM
I do not know what can this camera on PSP brings us?Take some pictures while playing psp,and then send it to my friends?Or Sony will develop some game which requires this peripherals. But this problem is what this new games will bring to gamers? If I have to pay a lot to play some boiling psp game, and then I will give it up.

I imported one and its actually really good. It looks really good in daylight but not so good at night.
but still great value.
Bibbly53 @ Aug 6th 2008 3:16PM
Great O.K.
Well as a Canadian I figure it's not happening either.
So why don't we get a neat firmware update allowing PSP users to shut up icons, except of course for system icons.
Useless icons are cluttering my XMB with their 'potential usefulness'.
darknapster @ Aug 12th 2008 8:13AM
in the IGN release date there is an EyeToy Play Portable in the list. :)
