Valve's Doug Lombardi denies PS3 version of Left 4 Dead
It appears that the internet was too quick to celebrate a potential EA-developed port of Left 4 Dead (us included). Supposed scans of the Official PlayStation Magazine quickly stated the title was going to eventually hit PS3 through an Orange Box-like deal, with EA handling porting duties of the game. However, Valve's big man in charge, Doug Lombardi, denied the existence of a PS3 port in a short and sweet statement to TGN: "There's no PS3 version of L4D currently in production."Apparently, the scan which turned into the talk of the town was taken out of context: it was simply a bullet point in a regular rumors column. However, considering the positive response to a PS3 version of Valve's upcoming multiplayer zombie apocalypse game, we'd think it foolish for EA to pass on an incredible opportunity like this.

this is the same thing they said about bioshock, now look at it. hey, it may not be in production, but already finished! we are waiting on the 360 version >:( lol
DJCUEBALL @ Aug 5th 2008 1:09PM
I'm starting to hate Valve more and more.
Byron517 @ Aug 5th 2008 1:10PM
I really hate Doug Lomlamer... what a basterd I hope he chokes on his crackers!! oh well I think we'll see it on PS3
paul @ Aug 5th 2008 1:42PM
Gabe Newell is worse cos hes a fat baxterd
Ysleiro @ Aug 7th 2008 1:41AM
Guys, nobody hates the guys developing Heavy Rain for PS3.
Why are you hating on this guy?
drdre74 @ Aug 5th 2008 1:11PM
people just don't care about making money is all.
Phil @ Aug 5th 2008 1:18PM
I can't be bothered with Valve anymore.. they just seem to be whiney old fools now.
But, given how many delays we've encountered already as hardy-PS3 owners, I'm over it.
chris.westermann @ Aug 5th 2008 1:21PM
Since Valve doesn't care about the PS3, can we stop caring about Valve? How about we put a moratorium on Valve stories on PS3 fanboy sites and focus on news, games, and companies that we actually care about.
Every time a Valve employee speaks money falls out of their mouths, but its money Microsoft has shoved down their throats to remain a pro-Xbox360/WinPC company in spite of failing sales and a quick decline into irrelevance.
KilgoreTrout XL @ Aug 5th 2008 3:25PM
Oh man, that's a hilarious post dude.
Arnon @ Aug 5th 2008 6:25PM
I was aware that Microsoft is doing fine with the 360 >.>.. RROD is pretty much gone now.
Sotos @ Aug 5th 2008 1:22PM
Well thats life PS3 boys so get use it
XBOX360 has better compatibility with the PC technology
and Microsoft has better influence with the gaming companies
Brodie-san @ Aug 5th 2008 1:32PM
Of course it does. It's practically a PC in itself. There's no surprise that it's easier to port games to the 360 if they originate on the PC.
Devin @ Aug 5th 2008 1:58PM
you have a valid point in your first statement, but the second one just pisses me off because how the f*ck do you know if MS has a "better" influence on gaming companies vs. Sony or Nintendo or whoever?
Phantom @ Aug 5th 2008 7:32PM
Saying the MS has more influence is just so 360 fanboy .
As far as I know , MS actually owns how many studios ?
Their own 1 and bungie right .
Sony is a much bigger company than MS too .
Arnon @ Aug 5th 2008 11:24PM
Sony? Bigger than Microsoft? Uhh..
Ysleiro @ Aug 7th 2008 1:43AM
No way Sony is bigger than MS.
Get your facts straight. Not bragging here, but when you put a PC in almost every household you are bringing home the CAKE !!
Brodie-san @ Aug 5th 2008 1:26PM
If EA are involved, trust me, it'll happen. Valve just probably won't be involved considering their PS3ophobia.
As time has gone by the EA devs are probably more "au faut" with developing for the PS3 (and TOB framerate issues were blown out of porportion anyway) so I wouldn't be surprised if L4D, when it arrives on the PS3, will be exactly the same as the 360. We might even get some more content.
Brodie-san @ Aug 5th 2008 1:29PM
proportion even ... typo
:)
Actually, I've just checked out the trailers for this game and, well ... let's just say I won't be signing petitions for it to come to the PS3 just yet. I'll need to see more before getting really excited.
Nick @ Aug 5th 2008 3:46PM
"Currently in production"
Hello, shitty port.
Ishimaru @ Aug 5th 2008 1:29PM
I stopped caring about Valve when HL2 came out. I couldn't care less about their games, and now this just proves they're a bunch of stuck up douchebags.
Ysleiro @ Aug 7th 2008 1:58AM
Yeah I agree.
Any game developer that acts like this is a pure dick head.
So the guys making heavy rain are also pure douche bags.
/end sarcasm.
Pistolaero @ Aug 5th 2008 1:30PM
Valve's games are so overrated. They are good but not as great as gamers make them out to be. That Left 4 Dead game looks like they gave it crack. Something is wrong with the game mechanic and I just can't put my finger on it. Anyway...Valve not bringing stuff over to PS3 is really not that big of a deal. Now, if Konami/Capcom announced no more PS3 games...that is reason for weeping.
gumby @ Aug 5th 2008 1:31PM
I second the valve moratorium.
Nate @ Aug 5th 2008 1:37PM
Does anyone really care if we don't get another friggin' zombie game? Let the 360 boys have it, I don't care.
Brodie-san @ Aug 5th 2008 2:08PM
I'll try and not jump to conclusions but, as Pistolaero stated: there's something not quite right. I watched the developer walkthrough on GT and well - I don't know. For some reason I got a "The Club" vibe off it. And it's not even a 3rd person shooter!
I didn't think the graphics were anything ground-breaking, the hand and gun model looked a bit iffy (a small thing but considering how long these models are on screen ...) and the framerate was a bit jumpy. Of course most (if not all) of these things could be accounted to a poor video transfer and might not be indicative of the actual quality of the game but ... without wanting to sound like a hater ... it's just not grabbing me.... for now ...
Hmm. I'll wait for more footage before stating whether or not I'm even interested in picking it up *if* it came to the PS3 but right now I won't be too miffed if it stays a PC/360 exclusive. After all, every system is going to have exclusives. I'm only disappointed if a game is an exclusive on a system I don't own. Like, I was always disappointed about Bioshock - until it was announced for PS3. I'd like a No More Heroes on the PS3 and, considering the Wii sales, that might actually happen. Not interested in Halo or Gears. I'd love a Super Mario Galaxy but yeah ... like that's ever going to happen.
:)
kentuckyfried @ Aug 5th 2008 3:46PM
This game looks fun, albeit not graphically perfect (characters look really stiff from the 1st person perspective). If it can imitate the intensity of the "28.....later" films, I'm all for it.
I wonder how much money M$ is paying Valve under the table, b/c normally people don't turn away good money (ps3 owners) without a good reason, even if they think the platform is *that bad* which it's not (at least not from a player's perspective as opposed to the developers')
Brodie-san @ Aug 5th 2008 4:11PM
There's really no conspiracy Valve are PC developers so porting a game to the 360 is a walk in a park. Investing the time and money into learning the PS3 is just something they don't need to do.
I can understand this from a certain perspective. After all, I'm sure they'd rather allocate their limited resources into new IPs and new games in general rather than wrestling with a system that is so different to the platform they originally developed for.
That said, give the IP to EA and I'm sure they'll get it working. TOB issues were exaggerated and, from the looks of it, there are some talented PS3 developers now at EA.
Problem solved.
Jerses @ Aug 5th 2008 1:38PM
oh nooooo! please bring this shooter to my ps3 its like...we dont have any good shooter on it. Left 4 dead looks horrible.. 20 polygons per character...dont want on my ps3
PS3SUCKS @ Aug 5th 2008 3:35PM
Your right you guys dont have anygood shooters =( so sad halo owns all
Devin @ Aug 5th 2008 3:37PM
Halo? You mean that run-of-the-mill FPS that hasn't changed since its inception? Based on your name you should be banned from this site. Go back to your cave, troll.
e.Missark @ Aug 5th 2008 4:05PM
Well DevinSucks, the Wii has outsold both the 360 and the PS3. Does it mean it is the best console on the market? NO!
Using sales numbers to justify why a game is good is plain STUPID. Microsoft fanboys bought the game because it has Halo on the title.
So GTFO with your 9 yr old brain.
anthonyjh @ Aug 5th 2008 5:21PM
Fantastic argument Devin. Considering the incredible sales of the Hanna Montana album, I imagine you must be her biggest fan?
Arnon @ Aug 5th 2008 6:31PM
Would you guys get over it? Halo -did- set a standard for FPS.. Sure, there's better FPS out there now, but Halo has set a lot of grounds for future FPS to come, and anyone who isn't daft.. would accept that.
Sure.. Goldeneye was the game to show that FPS could be amazing.. but, Halo was the game to kick off the FPS love..
Nick @ Aug 5th 2008 1:39PM
There isn't a PS3 version "currently in production".
Say hello to a port that is 6 months old.
rd2000 @ Aug 5th 2008 1:48PM
Lol guys...
"There's no PS3 version of L4D currently in production."
Just means.. They haven't started yet!
Niko @ Aug 5th 2008 3:24PM
As someone who's very interested in a PS3 port of L4D: Let me tell you, it seems likely Valve and EA have been paid to keep it a timed console exclusive. Neither are allowed to divulge any details on the inevitable PS3 version. EA had no problem putting the 360 Rock Band 2 out before all the others. Rock Band 2 is a 360 timed exclusive. With every denial of a PS3 version I'm reminded more and more of Bioshock... yet they never outright close the door on PS3 L4D. Everything they say with relation to a PS3 version is never an outright denial that it will never see the light of day. I'm more confidant that PS3 will get L4D, than I ever was that we'd get Bioshock.
e.Missark @ Aug 6th 2008 8:39AM
Timed exclusives are a joke and a waste of money on Microsoft's part. I'm not buying a 360 just because it has a game that comes out a couple of months earlier than on the PS3. It's ridiculous and I would think most people would look past the bullshit and feel this way too.
The idea of timed exclusives is moronic.
Devin @ Aug 5th 2008 2:00PM
So the console that supports Mouse + Keyboard gets shunned by a company who makes games specifically for them? Makes no sense to me. Both offer the best of both worlds. 360 = easier portability while PS3 = better tech & peripheral support.
Gaucho @ Aug 5th 2008 2:05PM
I thought it was said that EA was doing the port (a la Orange Box). Regardless I really don't get why there is such hostility from valve towards the PS3. Not even Microsoft seems to be that hostile towards Sony.
Brandon79 @ Aug 5th 2008 3:46PM
That's okay. If EA want to be retards and not put it on the system that makes them the most money, their loss. I am going to give them a big fuck you by pirating a copy and playing on UBUNTU.
Pistolaero @ Aug 5th 2008 3:45PM
Just to clear things up, I own the orange box for the 360. I loved Portal, but I'm sorry if I don't fall head over heels for HL2 and the redundant fucking mines. And if you ever get tired of that, how about redundant alien architecture? I felt like I was playing Halo 1-2 where the room before it looks EXACTLY the damn same.
Regardless of whether Left 4 Dead was coming to PS3 makes no difference in the fact that the game looks like a mediocre shooter. The mechanics are all off and I'm sorry, but if zombies are fast they are NOT Olympic fast. I mean, some of those zombies could give the worlds best sprinters a run for their money. Maybe thats what they were going for, but it is not what I am looking for in a zombie title.
I doubt people are hating this game JUST because it isn't coming to the PS3, if they are, then that is sad for them and they have issues they need to sort out. For example, anyone that thought Bioshock sucked just because it wasn't coming to the PS3 is a douche. That game was effin' amazing.
bkalasin @ Aug 5th 2008 3:44PM
I'm growing increasingly weary of valve's utter disregard for PS3 at this point. Don't think they'll be getting any more of my money if only due to the barely-contained disgust for it and all us owners. It's as if they're trying to limit their consumer base. Truly a boneheaded way to do business. Hey valve, I BOUGHT my PS3 to play The Orange Box. Morons...
Brodie-san @ Aug 5th 2008 2:54PM
Wow. So THAT'S what X3F looks like. It's so ... green!
:)
In my opinion his point is moot. There's always going to be fanboys that say one things and then flip when a game is ported to another system.
The more mature of us simply admit when we yearn for a game on another console and speak our minds if a certain game that is exclusive to a rival's is personally "uninteresting" if that's how we feel about it.
I'm not going to hide my comments that I'm not jumping up and down for L4D just because it's a 360 exclusive for fear of being stigmatised as a "Sony Slave" (just saw that term on X3F by the way - nice). Just like I didn't shy away from the fact that I wanted to play Bioshock back in the day when it was a 360 exclusive.
Fact is: this game could go PS3 exclusive tomorrow and my feelings would be the same. There are PS3 games (and exclusives) I'm not too keen on too you know!
:)
Leobebes @ Aug 5th 2008 3:58PM

You mean kind of like Insomniac?
Niko @ Aug 5th 2008 3:30PM
What's so hard to understand about this? Insomniac IS SONY 2ND PARTY. Is Valve Microsoft 2nd second party? No? Well... Clear that up for ya?
Leobebes @ Aug 5th 2008 3:59PM
Ok then, kinda like Konami?
kentuckyfried @ Aug 5th 2008 4:12PM
^ Kojima never said he wouldn't bring his next vision to the 360. It merely has to be on the console that he thinks can shoulder the load.
e.Missark @ Aug 5th 2008 4:14PM
^^^meaning the PS3.
Niko @ Aug 6th 2008 8:38AM
@Leobebes, (my other comment was directed at you, as well) Kojima hasn't said he wouldn't work on 360 games. (To further contrast: he hasn't talked shit about the 360, the way Gabe has about the PS3.) In fact, I think you can count on Kojima Productions to produce at least one multiplatform title.
e.Missark @ Aug 5th 2008 5:03PM
Have you not yet learned that Sony unlike Microsoft doesn't pay 3rd party companies for exclusivity. Kojima, not Konami, decided the best system for MGS4 was the PS3. Konami has released and will release games on the 360. Does Silent Hill 5 ring a bell?
But money talks, and Microsoft's money talks a lot.
