Touchscreen PSP arrives courtesy of modder
Don't want to wait for the touchscreen device SCEA possibly has installed for us? DCEmu's Pspzproject obviously didn't -- user jube808, a "professional electronic engineer," feels touchscreen should have been part of the PSP at launch and decided to mod a PSP to include the function. The touchscreen works with both a finger or a stylus, with the goal of eventually utilizing it for homebrew gaming. He also aims to add extra battery life and a redesigned control pad into the mix. Check it out in action in two videos after the jump.

Amazing. Suprises me how homebrew is always one step ahead of Sony.
If sony does make a psp touchscreen will screen protecters be supported? thats what i want to know, IMO, i would perfer not getting fingerprints on my psp's screen.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Aug 10th 2008 4:29PM
I really wouldn't want a touchscreen PSP unless it were maybe a smartphone/gaming phone. Other than that it feels like a rip off of the DS.
gurbinder @ Aug 10th 2008 5:05PM
thats kind of ineviatble in a way since all systems copy one another after a generation passes.
anarkhy @ Aug 10th 2008 8:10PM
Just get and iphone if you want a touchscreen device.

kind of ineviatble though since all companies copy each other to improve their products. Not going to perfer a psp touch while gaming though since it will block the screen unless i touch it super fast or with a small pen thing like ds which i will still be annoyed with. Guaranteed to make a few scratches at the least.

Good job modders. It's because of you guys the world still exists.
pat1202003 @ Aug 10th 2008 5:18PM
I knew someone was finally going to do this. I seen PSP touch screens on sell, but I never saw any use for them.
cafecito @ Aug 10th 2008 5:23PM
What a remarkable job. Impressive indeed.
I wouldn't like a touchscreen, tho. Not my cup o tea. That's why I got a PSP and not a DS in the first place :)
Christopher @ Aug 11th 2008 3:20PM
Well yeah, except the PSP has the wide format screen and has higher resolution as a result. I'd love a touch screen PSP. Besides, all games that would use touch screen controls would likely make them optional, just like most DS games can be controlled with standard control pads.
lonesomefolly @ Aug 10th 2008 5:39PM
Yeah, as if it didn't pick up enough finger prints already.
Dr Haisook @ Aug 10th 2008 6:32PM
I don't get as much satisfaction from tapping on the screen as mashing buttons. It just doesn't feel... right. So I can see Sony's move is correct. And I don't think they'd add a touchscreen in the future. This is not a PDA.
bryansurvive @ Aug 10th 2008 8:21PM
maybe if the touch screen had an option to be turned off while in play mode or something simply. cus i wouldnt use it during gaming just the gps or online.
Smokey @ Aug 10th 2008 9:54PM
pretty useless if you ask me... he did rip out the UMD reader...
Extinction @ Aug 10th 2008 9:56PM
I disagree completely, and after using the games on an iPod touch, UMPC, Tapwave Zodiac Palm pilot, and the DS, I am VERY thankful the PSP does not have this feature.
Manuel @ Aug 11th 2008 2:22AM
A touch screen PSP is uncalled for, especially with the DS already on top of that.
Homebrew is NOT onto of most things, they're like the Monday night review of the Sunday game.
Still a cool mod. I wouldn't want it, but it's an achievement none the less.
Kresnik @ Aug 11th 2008 6:03AM
I don't really like touch screen, but if there's touch pad mod, I like it much better.
Brian @ Aug 11th 2008 1:33PM
that's cool, it seem like everything is getting a touch screen so why not the psp, wonder if Sony is looking at this, oh an add in the motion sensor too.
farfisa @ Aug 11th 2008 2:37PM
Very cool mod, but I agree that it wouldn't be much fun for gaming. And the xmb is pretty efficient for most other things. Actually typing's the only thing I can't get used to on a PSP, so since they're apparently never going to get around to introducing / supporting a keypad, this wouldn't be totally off the wall to consider in a future product.
Juan @ Aug 11th 2008 3:35PM
This is a amazing homebrew, why cant sony do more stuff like this.
mike Ropp @ Aug 12th 2008 1:27AM
i remember seeing one of these and it turned out to be a fake
lonesomefolly @ Aug 12th 2008 6:06PM
Bah, I wouldn't want this. The screen catches enough finger prints as it is, and touch screens are so awkward to handle!
