Burnout Paradise becomes a PSN download this Fall

Fiona Sperry, Studio Manager for Criterion Games, said, "Our mission at Criterion is to provide the most entertaining gaming service possible. In order to do that, it's key that we have the ability to deliver content to players in ways that work for them - through quick and easy download or via traditional bricks and mortar. For us, the fun is in playing the game with friends and constantly discovering new surprises in the world. Download packs with meaningful new gameplay are the perfect way for us to keep entertaining fans and keep them playing, even months after launch."

Size, wonder how big the file size will be, just curious.
Andrew Yoon @ Aug 14th 2008 5:56PM
Let's not forget that the original game fit on one DVD.
Vince UK @ Aug 14th 2008 5:59PM
Ok that does it, time to update my measly 60gb floppy disc of a hard drive to something that'll last a few years.
Nate @ Aug 14th 2008 6:08PM
$99 320 gig hard drive:

jgpliskin @ Aug 14th 2008 5:33PM
Wow
Twinturbo120 @ Aug 14th 2008 5:35PM
im guessing it wont be bigger then 3GB's. since it is a PSN download
Dehshizknight @ Aug 14th 2008 5:58PM
Well, SIREN was 9 GB's so can't be so sure. Plus with all the updates, I doubt it will be that small.
Popfrogs @ Aug 14th 2008 6:25PM
Uh, news flash: the PSN doesn't limit download sizes. Yet.
Averna @ Aug 14th 2008 8:22PM
I doubt it will have size limits in the future... at least beyond common sense.
rohan @ Aug 14th 2008 5:40PM
i really like what Criterion Games are doing with burnout paradise, i hope more studios will follow their example
Lars @ Aug 14th 2008 6:17PM
They certainly have made amazing strides. I mean the online alone is awesome, how you can jump in and out of games with no loading and such, essentially merging your gaming world with the host's.
And while I think this is an awesome option, I'll be getting the disc-based version (yep, that's right, still haven't bought it). If I have both options then I might as well get the disc so I can lend it to friends or sell it in the future.
Steve Childs @ Aug 15th 2008 12:46PM
Yup, I'll never buy a game off PSN again if its out on Disc as well due to the limitations of a PSN game.
Namley that you have to be logged into your PSN account in order to play it. So if you take your PS3 over to a friend's / relation's house to pay it and they don't have 'net access, you're stuffed.
Until they fix that, I'm disc only.
themissing @ Aug 14th 2008 5:42PM
great game, great support, even more content on the way...go buy the blu ray. no excuses.
DeforMAKulizer @ Aug 14th 2008 5:50PM
Criterion ADORE the PS3!!!!! YAY!!!!
NipGrip @ Aug 14th 2008 5:53PM
Very impressive! That's something I love about the PSN is the ability to have your games completely downloadable and on your HD instead of having to switch out the disk. I might rebuy this for the downloadable version just so I don't have to switch it out. Maybe if it goes on sale ;)
Fiddlesworth @ Aug 14th 2008 5:59PM
Holy crap, that's awesome! If you're a Burnout freak it's cool to have the game there instantly accessible from the HDD.
Jack Tretton @ Aug 14th 2008 6:04PM
I wouldn't have guessed Burnout Paradise would be a size practical for downloading. Golly, doesn't Criterion know about how much greater Blu-ray makes games? What need for Blu-ray when you can sell your full-fledged titles on the PSN along with other hard drive-busters like Everyday Shooter and PixelJunk Eden?
Lars @ Aug 14th 2008 6:28PM
Long answer:
Blu-ray doesn't make better games automatically, but it does make it easier for devs to make games bigger, longer, more detailed, and so on.
While it's true that the size of the game has nothing to do with quality (look at Warhawk, it could just about fit onto an 800MB CD), I still side with Sony on this one. Give me better tech in my console please... next-gen tech for a next-gen system.
The media capacity will play a much bigger part later in the lifecycle too. The PS2 wouldn't have done as well nor lasted as long as it has if they would have decided to stick with CD's instead of moving on to DVD's. Could you imagine if the PS2 stuck with CD's? That'd be a nightmare... Forget swapping to the next disc with FF, you'd be CONSTANTLY swapping... or more likely the system would have been a failure. One 9GB DVD = 11 or 12 CD's!
Short answer: your comment is stupid.
McBonk @ Aug 14th 2008 6:06PM
Awesome! I've been sooooo tempted to pick this up - now it is a no-brainer. Thanks, Criterion!
Tyme @ Aug 14th 2008 6:08PM
Well whats the con? If it's on Blu-Ray and now it'll be downloaded able, will it be smaller than the blu-ray version? if so, what do we loose? performance, speed, graphics, extras???
Pete @ Aug 14th 2008 9:25PM
The ability to sell it. The other PSN "full" games have some pretty severe limitations with regard to logins, what machines you can run it on, etc...
ryan @ Aug 14th 2008 9:50PM
you only loose space on your hard drive. but buying a bigger hard drive shouldn't be a problem.
frankym @ Aug 14th 2008 6:19PM
Digital distribution here we go
ajiezer @ Aug 14th 2008 6:26PM
This is one of the games that IMO gives the most, I haven't gotten it yet because I don't love car games but the demo left me impressed and now that it is @ 30 clams I'll get it but on a BR disk, I rather have a hard copy of a game than sacrifice space on my PS3. I hope more developers give the PS3 that kind of commitment and good replayability, kudos for Criterion
BSTKiller @ Aug 14th 2008 6:31PM
Started looking for a 320gb drive just now. Any opinions on Samsung Spinpoint? $100.
Perhaps PS3Fanboy could do a round up and review of 250/320 GB HDD reliability and compatibility?
NipGrip @ Aug 15th 2008 1:05AM
I have this HD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136197
Installed with zero issues on my 60gig and on my buddies newer 40gig machine without stripping 1 screw ;)
I then got this external enclosure for my old drive and use it for 60gigs of media storage:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182140
Not muh dough for a HUGE improvement in HD space.
wii_HD @ Aug 14th 2008 6:59PM
Its been stated already its not over 5GB in size as the same
game is availble on DVD for XboX360.
Invisible Robot Meat @ Aug 14th 2008 7:09PM
While this is pretty good news, Criterion is loving the fact that you won't be able to re-sell the game once you grow tired of it, so that just equals money in their pocket. Even if they initally sell it at a cheaper price.
El_Horno @ Aug 14th 2008 7:33PM
I love all the people saying they will now buy it due to the fact it is a digital download.
Surely it is not that much bother to reach over, pick up a case, pull out the disk, then insert it into the PS3.
Pavelz @ Aug 15th 2008 7:33AM
The thing is El Horno that there are PS3 users that live in such far and crazy place like Israel where this particular game costs almost 120$ (I kid you not) and that's where Digital Download becomes such an important option. I just bought the Warhawk and saved me almost 80$
El_Horno @ Aug 15th 2008 8:52AM
I do understand that as I have a friend on my PSN who indeed has the same problem.
But I'm betting that not everyone on this here site is from these places that do have that problem and that is who my comment was aimed at.
exetermako @ Aug 14th 2008 10:58PM
Okay, so I'm impressed. Sure the game is probably only about the same size as Siren, but the fact that it's downloadable means you will ALWAYS have it available for a quick few minutes of play or some online debauchery even if another game is in the drive. I also assume it will be available on XBLA at the exact same time.
NipGrip @ Aug 15th 2008 1:02AM
Not unless MS significantly raises the size limits allowed on downloadable titles on XBL. Having full downloadable games the scale of Warhawk and now Burnout is something the PSN has over the Live service.

Useless to say that I love Criterion Games. Isn't it?
However I'll buy that little gem of Burnout Paradise when Trophies'll be out as well with the new updates. Woooah! :o
