Jack Tretton, president and CEO of SCEA had this to say: "Our year-to-date sales growth of 99% for the PS3 reaffirms that consumers are indeed embracing PS3 as their entertainment hub-of-choice with its feature-rich offerings like Blu-ray and our recently announced video delivery service. With an unmatched software line-up that includes LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, Resistance 2 and MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, and the anticipated launch of our new 80GB PS3 model, we're confident in a strong second half of the year and look forward to quickly addressing any inventory shortages due to the transition."

Important things to note: the 360 version of SCIV still outsold the PS3 version, in spite of online predictions. Also, Metal Gear Solid 4 dropped out of the top 10 list entirely. (NPD numbers do not include sales of system software bundled with hardware.)
Update: Changed the headline -- We wanted "dominance" to portray the PS3's winning streak -- the system has won almost every month this year so far.

"Dominance"? The PS3 free fell by 44% and only sold about twenty thousand more units. I know this is a fanboy site and all, but lets have some logic.
Wrathbringer @ Aug 14th 2008 8:05PM
I was thinking that too, usually PS3F is pretty honest about where the black box stands but here they're stating a big win with only a small margin.

LJ @ Aug 14th 2008 8:11PM
Man, there were no big releases on July for the PS3, unlike June when MGS4 came out.. YOU SHOULD HAVE SOME LOGIC.
The 360 got the same games the PS3 did + a price drop + Alone in the Dark, and the PS3 still managed to sell more. That is pretty good.
I guess logic does not apply to you. :-S
adolson @ Aug 14th 2008 8:38PM
People are never happy. PS3F posts negative news, act like 360 fans, people complain. Now PS3F posts positive news, act like PS3 fans, and still, people complain.
Tann @ Aug 14th 2008 8:45PM
alone in the dark sucked.
you can't say that's something to help the 360=/
Hyams @ Aug 14th 2008 8:46PM
Yeah, but the fact that the 360 failed to sell more than the PS3 even with the price drop is clearly a win for the PS3 and a loss for the 360.
I mean, c'mon, if you have a price drop and your sales actually DECREASE you're obviously doing something wrong.
ruibing @ Aug 14th 2008 9:09PM
I think it's doing pretty damn well considering vgchartz had estimated the numbers to be lower (and the 360 to be 50% higher). This is certainly a pleasant surpise.
Arnon @ Aug 14th 2008 9:15PM
I think "dominance" should be compared when there's 2 major titles for both consoles out in the same month... not a 20k lead difference. Because if we go by that, then the 360 will most likely outsell the PS3 in Japan this month due to Tales of Vesperia.
Arnon @ Aug 14th 2008 9:20PM
BUT! This is very cool.
Big Ed @ Aug 14th 2008 9:32PM
LJ, the point is that the PS3's biggest title couldn't carry console sales for more than a month, and after July, sales dropped immensely. The 360 didn't even have a hot console bundle with one of the most hotly anticipated games of the year like the PS3 did, and sales are very close.
So what exactly was the point you were you trying to make? MGS4 sold well and boosted the PS3 momentarily? No shit.
Don't talk down to me until you actually have a solid argument. If what I said wasn't valid, would the headline have changed?
dartmerc @ Aug 14th 2008 10:24PM
Big Ed loves the Big Dick.
PS3 in NPD is DOMINATING the 360. For the last x months it's come out on top.
Go take your dictionary somewhere else, maybe you can help some poor kids find more appropriate words to use.
il_duce620 @ Aug 14th 2008 11:57PM
"the system has won almost every month this year so far."
-- Andrew Yoon
...you mean...besides the Wii? Or the DS, for that matter (if the word "system" is used, not "console")?
Yeah...I'm an ass... Oh well... :-P
time-space @ Aug 15th 2008 1:51AM
well here is the logic Big Ed. if that is your real name. The ps3 outsold the xbox (by the way, what kind of name is that, whats the x for anyways "extreme"; lame...) even though it lowered its price.
Arnon @ Aug 15th 2008 2:21AM
God when people go out of their way to try and find the most minimal details about something and talk trash about it, makes me laugh..
Sinful Lust @ Aug 15th 2008 1:49PM
this childish bickering is why video games will be tied to words like inmature and childish for years to come
Draco @ Aug 15th 2008 2:15PM
Can anyone even find a PS3 in store? I mean a a 80GB with BC? cause since MGS4 came out I haven't seen one, and I've been looking.
MGS4 bundle came out, sold out almost immediately and was never replaced by the looks of things, lots of 40GB floating around.
Seba501 @ Aug 14th 2008 7:56PM
Wow the Ps2 is unstoppable, and i´m glad to see those number for Ps3
PD: First ??
OddyOh @ Aug 14th 2008 7:59PM
Yes Jack, we'd all love the video service, please launch it in our respective countries!
LJ @ Aug 14th 2008 7:59PM

saito ps3 @ Aug 14th 2008 8:01PM
so much for xbox 360 outselling ps3 in july according to xbox360fanboy site lol
Seba501 @ Aug 14th 2008 8:08PM
Hahaha u are right, just look at Vgchartz
http://vgchartz.com/amonthly.php?month=7&year=2008&boxartz=1
Ysleiro @ Aug 15th 2008 1:20PM
Guys lets get one thing straight.
Better sales does not equal greatness.
Just ask Transformers (the game) one of 2007's highest sellers and yet also one of 2007's crappiest games.
Not dissing ps3 or 360 just saying that greater sales is nothing to tout about. Greater games is and should be the main focus.
After all "el cheapo" cars outsell expensive BMWs and Benzs all day long.
francisco @ Aug 14th 2008 8:05PM
Nice...ps3 doing good now. Lets how to see MORE exclusive ps3 games next year
Zombie Huggles @ Aug 14th 2008 8:13PM
forgive my ignorance. But I see a number on the left, a red downward arrow, a number on the right, then a percentage. I'm pretty sure I get the two numbers embracing the red-arrow, but what's the percentage exactly. Because Wii's sales dropped, if I understand this correctly, by 500%. Then again, I may have no idea what I'm looking at; "Whoo-Hoo, our numbers are bigger than yours!"
amount @ Aug 14th 2008 8:23PM
Wii... 555K units sold, 111K less than the previous month, 16.7% decrease
Zombie Huggles @ Aug 14th 2008 8:43PM
Ok, I got it now.
adolph fitler @ Aug 14th 2008 8:34PM
Well considering PS3 is still the highest priced out of the three, fanboys of other consoles claims that PS3 has "no" decent exclusive games, and nothing groundbreaking has released on any of the three consoles since MGS4.......it's no wonder sales are down 44%. Notice how 360 sales were only down 6-7%. that means 360 was selling crap in the face of PS3 with it's only exclusive AAAA scoring title.
This also means that Sony will sell masses more consoles upon release of it's other big titles. LBP, FFXIII (timed exclusive), Twisted Metal, Wipeout, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Ratchet: Q.F.B, Unchartered 2, Jak & Daxter, Team Ico's next game and others that slip my mind all have the potential to push more consoles, in varying numbers.
But a game like Socom (PS2's biggest online game), will definately sell machines. Then games like GOW, Tekken, etc, etc, will further push hardware sales, as well as Home's promising looking premise.
Arnon @ Aug 14th 2008 9:01PM
Totally dude.. Cause the 360 doesn't have any other games coming out this year. (Please note the sarcasm)
ryan @ Aug 14th 2008 9:49PM
i really hate that analogy of "Game X 1.5".
EVERY sequel can be called a 1.5.
Arnon @ Aug 14th 2008 11:35PM
God who is this e. Missark.. Seems even PS3 fans hate this kid.
saito ps3 @ Aug 14th 2008 8:21PM
seba501, you are dumb for posting that, last i checked ps3 sold 14.7 million worldwide, not 5.5 million, and wii has over 25 million sold not 13, and ps2 sold over 100 million units, so your link fails, ps3 outsold 360 in july, face it
LJ @ Aug 15th 2008 9:04AM
MAn.. Chill! The information posted on that link is for North America... As the information shown by the NPD group is for the US.
RebornJeremiah @ Aug 14th 2008 8:47PM
I think it is going up cause most ppl that buy it already got 360....
ryan @ Aug 14th 2008 9:52PM
i agree. there are actually reasons to own one now. 'might as well pick one up', is the general idea.
(IRE)Wolfman @ Aug 14th 2008 8:49PM
Wii
30,906,437
PS3
14,734,160
X360
20,297,642
e.Missark @ Aug 14th 2008 9:22PM
Those are some really nice numbers. Now all we need is for 5 million of the 140 million PS2 owners to upgrade to a PS3 and we're even. Don't ya think?
Arnon @ Aug 14th 2008 11:35PM
e. Missark, you're almost making me want to regret the PS3.. PS2 fans are migrating to the PS3 AND 360..
MGOSW @ Aug 14th 2008 8:54PM
I own all three 7th generation consoles I don't really care and sales for a company they don't benefit to me.
The only thing I find funny is that X3F said they were sure 360 would outsell PS3 in July and those hardcore fanboys unnecessarily dissed PS3 owners but they must feel foolish now lol.
LBP is popular is hell down here in Baltimore, MD. PS3's are sold out in most gamestops.
The day when hardcore fanboys see the rise of PS3 will be so funny.
Did they honestly think PS3 would suck ass forever? Its gonna shine big from late 08-09
MexicanTerrorist @ Aug 14th 2008 9:12PM
And despite horrible press, being hated by every single gaming wesbite ever (except this one), having only one game that the general public is REALLY into, losing a handful of major exclusives, and being higher priced than the competition, our big black box still manages to sell better than the 360 at this point in its lifecycle.
It brings tears to my eyes.
No, not really.
But still, good job Sony!
kentuckyfried @ Aug 14th 2008 9:45PM
I think that at least initially, the media smear campaign was fueled by Microsoft $$. I've never seen so much hate for a console release before, up to this date. You'd think a similar thing would've been seen upon the 360's release and that didn't occur at all.
cluster1 @ Aug 14th 2008 11:03PM
this is a fun world we live in, people debating about the craziest things!
Hello299 @ Aug 14th 2008 9:58PM
Microsoft waited way too long to make any substantial price cuts to the xbox360; they overestimated the 360's value and now are paying the price for it. The ps3 has much more value with built in wireless, blu-ray, and free online play along with it being a great gaming system. The days of 600 dollar ps3's and not many good games are over and now it's a level playing field. Consumers aren't dumb and will be looking for a greater value proposition; the xbox360 simply didn't offer that for a very long time.
HanzoTheRazor @ Aug 14th 2008 10:49PM
This is where it starts too get really interesting. We finally are seeing a PS3 that was promissed, great games and service. We have a very strong line up this year to go head to head with the 360, but next year the games line up is HUGE. We will also see a price drop either at the end of the year or early next, so the ex-box should be worried. Sure, the 360 has good games too, but they finally have a true competitor and a much stronger one this time too!
EdMan @ Aug 14th 2008 11:40PM
Considering the narrow sales difference, the real kicker is next month. Key figure is the month-to-month drop-off. With such a % drop for the PS3, I don't see it beating out the 360 next month.
- PS3: 224.9K 180.1K (-44.5%)
- Xbox 360: 204.8K 15.2K (-6.91%)
dartmerc @ Aug 15th 2008 12:17AM
umm.. i'm pretty sure MGS4 was released last month.
Arnon @ Aug 15th 2008 12:19AM
Thank you Ed.. you're like the only one that has made sense. This small amount of difference is so minimal it shouldn't even be recognized.. You could honestly say they were about even this month.
time-space @ Aug 15th 2008 1:39AM
I agree with you, however you forget that the 80GB ps3 for the price of a 40gb is being released this September, and Little Big Planet is "planned" for September as well.
Arnon @ Aug 15th 2008 2:22AM
The 360 just outsold the PS2 and PS3 in Japan this week O.o
leiwei @ Aug 15th 2008 2:03AM
Hey hey! I'm Mr. Pachter! I predict the PS3 will be outsold by the Xbox 360 by 34k units for the month of August. But! The PS3 will pick up pace again and outsell its competitors when The Dark Knight comes out on Blu-ray!
lmao anyone know how much analysts get paid to make these claims?
