Australia gets new 80GB SKUs priced and dated
Everyone seems to be getting in on the new 80GB SKUs, including the Aussies. These new units, dubbed the new "core pack" set to replace the current 40GB machines, will feature double the storage space at no additional cost. Sony Australia confirms that the core pack is coming to Australia on August 28 and will retail for AUS$699.
The same pack will be available in North America this September and Europe on August 27. As a reminder, the units come with a DualShock 3 and the same functionality as the 40GB units -- namely 2 USB slots, no memory card readers, and no PS2 backwards compatibility.

All PS3 models are backwards compatible with PlayStation (PS1) games.

they still sell the 80gb Metal Gear pack with partial PS2 compat. don't they? i mean i don't mind really if future models don't carry it, but the option is nice.

How does that compare to the current price of the Australian 40 GB model? Because the Australian dollar is not much different from Canadian and American money, but surely they're not going to price the 80GB model at something close to $699 in North America?

Current Australian 40GB are retailing at AUS$699 which is why it is priced as such.
The new North American 80GB units are US$399. That's the way it is...

The AUD has actually fell a heap in the last week or two. It was at .98 = 1 USD about a month ago, but now it's all the way back down to about .87
:(

If these are the ones we're supposed to see here in US I really want to know if these come with the RSX die-shrink along with the newer heatsink they were talking about.

I wonder why everyone is getting it before us in america I pretty much wanna the upgrade.
Devin @ Aug 15th 2008 10:28PM
How would you be upgrading? in HDD space? If so, you could easily upgrade the HDD yourself.
Dwag @ Aug 15th 2008 10:54PM
Well I really want to up to date with the newest stuff which is why I plan on selling my 40GB and why I asked if the new 80GB will have those new RSX chips.

will they have a 80GB "Core Pack" and a normal 80GB? It sucks to see Backwards compatibility go away.
Mo @ Aug 16th 2008 1:32PM
Here is a real question, can anyone still find the MGS4 80 here in America? Everywhere I've been to has it sold out with no replacements for weeks. Is Sony phasing it out already?
reggiea23 @ Aug 16th 2008 10:42PM
Humm I just saw this at a local BB looks like they are selling them early sucks not having BC otherwise I would of snatched one up

BRING BACK BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY!!!!!!!!!! why do you do this to us Sony? At least the Americans were given the option of purchasing a semi-backwards compatible system, here in Australia we get slapped with again another optionless option, how is that for twisted logic? (we either play PS3 games or PS3 games!) bring back the original! I don't know where they got the idea that all Australian's didn't want the PS3 at it's release price of $999.00 (AU). I would've paid that, but now I'm stuck deciding between an optionless option in hopes of maybe receiving an update that fixes this problem (yep, that'll be the day) or going on places like e-bay and paying almost quadruple the amount for something that's probably been sitting on a sofa for six-hundred years collecting dust and receiving inconceivable amounts of scratches! Grrr, Sony why? I, like so many others would buy your product if you put backwards compatibility back in!
Yeah ok...I've had my say; released my aggression, for today...if anyone agrees with me let your voices be heard and if you don't then go ahead voice your opinions too! I'd like to know, although I probably already do know as there are like millions of people (maybe just in Australia?) who, like me want to buy a product that's considered to be the next installment in a product line because it can do sooo much more than what it's predecessors did before it. Instead consumers are being offered an impressive machine; no doubt however it does do what others can't but it doesn't replace the old system as it's supposed to! So here I am left angrily awaiting the day we finally get a backwards compatible system at a reasonable price. Viva-the-PS3-revolution! Bringing back what was in the original would be Sony's greatest triumph over it's competitors (who by the way are moping the floor with Sony). I'm still a loyal fan but everyday I'm finding the new product less and less appealing... come on SONY get with the program! (pardon the nerdy pun)
