160GB model also announced for America: $499, November release

"As PLAYSTATION Network continues to evolve with our recently launched video delivery service and more exclusive games, PS3 owners are demanding more storage capacity," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "Consumers also are utilizing PS3 as an entertainment hub for their digital media, placing content such as their entire music collection on the hard drive. The 160GB PS3 system addresses this growing consumer demand in a compelling bundle that delivers significant value."

Damn it. I wish it was out NOW!
Lionp696 @ Aug 20th 2008 12:26PM
This would probably sell better with little big planet.
tristan88 @ Aug 20th 2008 12:31PM
way better.
The Aggie CEO @ Aug 20th 2008 12:34PM
wouldnt it be nice if the Rumored LBP bundle is a 160GB model with BC??? lol
Sonny @ Aug 20th 2008 1:14PM
It probably would, but I bet Sony are looking at it this way, bundle a really great game that will show off how great the ps3 games visuals can be, and have a game that supports trophies, along with a free voucher to download a great psn game. The trophies will get players hooked just like people were hooked for gamer scores. The best thing is, in order to download PIAN, you'll have to create a psn account, which means one more customer. I think it's a great package.
MexicanTerrorist @ Aug 20th 2008 12:26PM
Replace that copy of Uncharted with LBP and these bundles will go like crazy.
Justin @ Aug 20th 2008 12:27PM
Any idea if there will be backwards compatability?
Matt @ Aug 20th 2008 6:02PM
No, they dont include BC.
PyroChief @ Aug 20th 2008 12:28PM
I glad I bought the 80GB w/ MGS4. I've heard that the 160GB won't have PS2 BC.
iamkid @ Aug 20th 2008 12:51PM
good to hear youre glad you got it, but one thing ive never understood. why is everyone always so concerned if it has ps2 BC? it shouldnt really be a problem, seeing as you have a ps2...
ryan @ Aug 20th 2008 1:51PM
he never said in his post that he did own a PS2. Love MGS4 but want to try it's predecessors? No problem!....if your PS3 is an older model.
so what's a consumer to do? spend $80 to $120 bucks on a PS2? Yeah! that's a great idea Sony!
friendlyguy25 @ Aug 20th 2008 2:28PM
I don't think they should have gotten rid of the BC all together. They can sell a BC 20 gig for people who really want the BC. I would buy it so fast, and grab a bigger HD from somewhere else.
The biggest reason, i think for BC, is being connected to the PSN. While you screw around playing GTA 3. You could be setting up your next Warhawk game. Or waiting for you friends to sign in.
vahdyx @ Aug 20th 2008 2:46PM
I agree with you dude, I need Backward Compatibility!
I never owned a PS2 and I'll never buy one! Wired controllers, memory cards etc. No thanks
I'd rather use my PS3!
I hope the 160gb has BC
Arnon @ Aug 20th 2008 4:47PM
I thought that was one of the reasons we bought a PS3.. so we wouldn't have to plug in our PS2 to play PS2 games. BC ftw, yo :
Kyuba08 @ Aug 20th 2008 12:28PM
Shoot, I might get this bundle instead of the new 80 GB PS3 coming out.
AND it comes out in November? Nice.
jae29one @ Aug 20th 2008 12:28PM
Man.. This is making think of selling my 60GB
prodigy69 @ Aug 20th 2008 1:13PM
comments like that make me lol
The Aggie CEO @ Aug 20th 2008 12:35PM
basically........your 60GB is worth more on eBay used that one of those 160GB models will be new.......lol
me @ Aug 20th 2008 12:43PM
NEVER get rid of your 60 gig, it's the one with the most features... I upgraded mine to a 250 for less than $100 bucks. Well worth it. I'll cry the day my 60 craps out...
Nate @ Aug 20th 2008 1:08PM
Dude, 320 gig hard drive on newegg for $99. Problem solved. There is no way no how any reason to ever get rid of your 60 gig.
Popfrogs @ Aug 20th 2008 1:14PM
Eh, I guess if you twist my arm I'll take it off your hands for like $300. You know, coz it's old and out of warranty and has a small hard drive.
tristan88 @ Aug 20th 2008 12:30PM
so what about the functionality. will it have backwards compatibility, memory card slots, 4 usb ports, and just the lame 40 gb specs.
rogXue @ Aug 20th 2008 12:30PM
Any idea on the specs or if backwards compatability is making a come-back?
Andrew Yoon @ Aug 20th 2008 12:34PM
It will not be BC with PS2 games.
Ness @ Aug 20th 2008 12:33PM
how many models are out there now?
The Aggie CEO @ Aug 20th 2008 12:36PM
Currently or total??
lol
Currently there are 3.....(40GB, 80GB Core, and 80GB MGS4 Bundle)
total??? there is gonna be around 6 or 7 by years end.......lol
The Aggie CEO @ Aug 20th 2008 12:37PM

Andrew Yoon @ Aug 20th 2008 12:52PM
There will be two models: the 80GB Core and the new 160GB system. Neither will have PS2 BC, meaning the MGS4 bundle is your only chance left to get PS2 support for now.
Devin @ Aug 20th 2008 12:34PM
I wonder if this SKU will sport the new 45nm Cell's?
MetalGearsOfSolidWar @ Aug 20th 2008 12:36PM
Already updated my 80gig bc PS3 to 320gig but thanks anyway Sony for giving PS3 users and new buyers the option for more memory
Mr. Joe @ Aug 20th 2008 1:02PM
how did you do this? is there a forum somewhere you can link to? thanks.
Nate @ Aug 20th 2008 1:17PM

Really, it's very very easy.
Popfrogs @ Aug 20th 2008 2:11PM
Isn't this in the user manual the PS3 comes with? I know it's thick, and it has alot of words, but I swear they explain how to replace the hard drive, with pictures.
rogXue @ Aug 20th 2008 12:43PM
Never do that... Your 60 gig has more functionality than any other ps3 version. I upgraded my 60 gig to a 250 and couldn't be happier. if my 60 ps3 craps out I will cry and will feel ripped off...
aeronez @ Aug 20th 2008 12:49PM
I've been planning to buy a PS3 just recently but now I'm not sure if I should buy the 80gb Metal Gear Solid bundle, which has backwards compatibility or wait for the 160gb Uncharted Bundle in November with no backwards capability. Is space really that big of a deal, and I have a PS2 already, so is backwards compatibility really needed?
Christian @ Aug 20th 2008 12:59PM
If you want BC get the MGS bundle and then at a later time when you are running out of disk space just buy a huge HD and replace the 80GB one in the system. This is fully supported by Sony and probably gives you a lot more bang for the bucks in terms of HD capacity. I got a 320 GB hd in my machine, which used to be 60GB.
fabio1 @ Aug 20th 2008 1:47PM
I recently played Kingdom hearts II on my ps3 (mgs4 bundle) and I was glad to find out that the game is much, much better than on the ps2. The ps3 is actually the best ps2 out there. Why, you ask?
- It upscales the image to 1080i (at least in my case, I don't have a 1080p TV)
- It has an option to smooth out the graphics, which really helps with the jaggies
- it has faster loading times
bluedessert140 @ Aug 20th 2008 12:52PM
I don't see what's so great about it if it doesn't have backward compatibility.
I'm just gonna keep my 80gb.
The Collective @ Aug 20th 2008 12:59PM
Gah!
I sold my 60 GB a while back to help with some bills. I have been slowly getting money to buy an 80 GB MGS4 bundle. But those will stop being made soon :(
I only wish that this 160 GB PS3 had BC
Gambit07 @ Aug 20th 2008 12:59PM
is it true that there is a maximum drive size for a swap? or we can put as big of a hard drive possible?
Christian @ Aug 20th 2008 1:02PM
As big as you want, but since it needs to be a 2.5" driver I think around 500GB is the biggest available currently.
Nate @ Aug 20th 2008 1:09PM
Has to be a 2.5" (aka "laptop") hard drive, but other than that, whatever size you can find, you can put in there. Largest readily available one is 320 gigs, which $99 on newegg.com (a respectable hardware site I've bought thousands of dollars worth of equipment from - including my PS3).
G @ Aug 20th 2008 1:21PM
There are two 500GB 2.5" SATA drives out now from Samsung (9.5mm) and Hitachi (12.5mm). My first PS3 is on pre-order right now, so I'm suddenly paying close attention. Is there somewhere online with details on HDD swap outs? Will a 12.5mm tall drive fit? And I thought I had read that Sony only tested up to 250GB. There is a theoretical limit with certain drive controllers of around 300GB which might be important now that drives have caught up. So much data to take in. Very excited. :)
Phil @ Aug 20th 2008 1:10PM
I use an external usb hard drive for games I don't play anymore. It was like 20$ for 320 gigs. I don't think I'd wanna pay that much more for a model with half the space and a game (although it was awesome) that's as old as that.
francisco @ Aug 20th 2008 2:00PM
this is insane! lol and they were saying ps3 were down 3bil - money is nothing to them, for them customers are more important XD too bad i have a 60gb launch i hope they sell sony hard drive seperatly in the future =P
Popfrogs @ Aug 20th 2008 2:12PM
Uh, why are you wishing for a Sony hard drive? You can install pretty much any 2.5" SATA laptop hard drive in the PS3...it's in the manual.
iamkid @ Aug 20th 2008 2:12PM
holy crap, thats pretty cool! i could use an extra 80 gigs, even though im no where near there yet.
lorddshadow @ Aug 20th 2008 5:30PM
damn with sony you really have to wait with your bundles...new ps3 bundle announced like 2 months after i get the mgs4 80gb and new psp announced 10 months after i get my star wars psp...time to sell the psp i guess.
Popfrogs @ Aug 20th 2008 5:55PM
You'd be a fool to be jealous of this bundle. Your 80GB is the next best thing to the 60GB. All this offers is a larger hard drive...nothing more.
Adis @ Aug 20th 2008 6:01PM
Cant I just, via usb plug in my external 500 gig HD and us it for storying downloadable content? Or this wont work?
