Looks like the retailer leaks were right. The 80GB PS3 will launch in Europe this Friday (except for Australia). A new 160GB model has also been announced. Retailing for €449, this premium bundle will include a €70 game and will be available on Oct 31st. This bundle will not include PS2 backwards compatibility either.
They really need to stick to a basic model. I bet a lot of consumers are going to be confused by the number ok SKU's, though it's their own faults :P They should research this before buying a $400 - 500 console.
nice......although I was think the 160(if released in the state) would be along the same lines as the current 80GB MSG4 bundle and have Backwards Compatibility as well as the 4 USB ports, and the memory card slots...

storage is great for people who dont have ps3 yet but for the people who do need to learn that ucan also use a 2.5" serial ata hard drive or external hard drive and its easy to install. example i have the system that first came out i went on to ebay and got me a 320 gigs harddrive for about $120 and im have enough space for a long time but still serchin for a 500 gig serial ata 2.5" harddrive
On the same logic, why offer something for free, when a lot of people will pay good money for it anyway? They can offer solid games like R&C or Uncharted and people would be happy, and still buy LBP, which means the customer buys console and game, rather than just console which includes the 1 game they want. Incentives are usually there to persuade people to make a decision they wouldnt otherwise make, not to give things away they are quite capable of selling anyway. Maybe they'll do a bundle with LBP, but you'd pay more for it... at least thats my thought on it. Things you can sell, you sell. Things you cant sell, you use as incentives.
Couldn't care less about PS2-compat, got it now and never use it. Would consider switching to a new model to reduce power and noise though, but only if I could get a model with memory card readers and 4 USB ports
Yeah I always felt those were weird omissions from the 40GB sku. I work in prototyping (surface mount stuff) and I can tell you that deleting 2 usb ports will save maybe a nickel in high volume production.
Although I think BC is great... I have to admit, I haven't played a single PS2 game since the first month I owned my PS3. Why play old games when you can play new ones?
I think BC is probably much less important to most people nowadays. Those that want to play PS2 games will have a PS2. Those that don't care, don't care.
Yeah PS2 BC was one reason why i got my 80gb Motorstorm bundle the other was that they were out of the COD4 bundle at Costco. But also for the built in browser and the card reader since I did not get that with my PC. Hope that they keep the 4 USB ports, because two is just not enough for most of the games I like to play since you need an extra USB hardware to play and add controller charging 2 ports just is not enough.
Not to rain on your parade. And I do think its good that Sony is increasing the standard HD space. But if you want a cheap PS3 with tons of storage then I recommend that you take advantage of on one of the sure to happen 40GB stock clearance sales, and then buy for instance a 320GB 2.5" HD to replace the standard one. It will probably be cheaper in total and give you the 320GB model instead of a 160GB one :)
No backwards compatability again? For gods sake sony are you trying to piss people off, i'm still not gonna buy a brand new one. my ps2 died i'm not buying 2 consoles i want a ps3 that will do the job, guess 2nd hand is the way forward for me.

Cool! We're ahead in standard storage once more. It also makes sense, considering the beautiful focus they seem to be putting on PSN games.
colinbell @ Aug 20th 2008 11:40AM
Cool, but they should really just stick to a basic model and leave it to us to upgrade to whatever size we need, its easy enough.
Lars @ Aug 20th 2008 12:31PM
Well, I think it's good to have different options for people who don't want to fuss with it, or don't understand what a hard drive even is...
But it would be cool to offer one sans-HDD to us more savvy consumers, at a reduced price of course.

I think this is the next step in lowering hardware costs and potentially making money, or breaking even, on the console.
Nerdkiller @ Aug 20th 2008 11:41AM
I think what you ment to say is that its 70 euros of downloadable content, not a game. Still, its a sweet deal.
Kholar @ Aug 20th 2008 11:40AM
I guess ps2 bc is officially dead.

I hope they keep making the ps3 in the US with BC. I'd buy a 20 gig with BC any day. Especially if you can switch out the HD.
elmosca @ Aug 20th 2008 11:57AM
I bet the game is LittleBigPlanet? Isn't LBP released the same day? That could boost sales for this new model...

Ummm, am I the only one here who noticed this - AUSTRALIA IS NOT IN EUROPE,
ITS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PLANET!!!!!
"will launch in Europe this Friday (except for Australia)"
Im not racist but I thought sum1 was joking when they said Americans dont have geography lessons. Then i saw this article
http://www.metafilter.com/21760/Americans-get-a-D-in-geography
the comments are worrying
no offense but just about every country in the world teaches geography as a compulsory subject from the age of 6 to 16
I hope you didnt mean Austria, thats like confusing the United States of America with South America
