MGS4 80GB bundle may be discontinued
It looks like the 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle really was "limited edition." The $499 bundle has been deleted from the Wal-Mart databases, to make way for the 80GB Core and upcoming 160GB Uncharted pack. Considering the current MGS4 pack is the only system to support PS2 backwards compatibility, this may be your last chance to get your hands on a PS3 that can play PS2 games. Neither the current $399 80GB Core nor the upcoming $499 160GB bundle will support PS2 games at all.Stay tuned for Sony's official response.

Fail Sony Fail.
I love my 60 GB PS3, but at this rate, I'm going to be the only one in my circle of friends with a PS3, because lack of BC makes it a non-starter.
David @ Aug 20th 2008 4:15PM
No, Sony or SCEA didint fail, SCEE(Europe) has truly failed you guys in america had a 60GB Playstation 3 with hardware BC, what we europeens never had, you guys have a 80GB Playstation 3 with 4 usb ports the memory reader and BC, which we never had and you even had a phenomenal bundle (Playstation 3 with MGS 4 and DS3) ... sony doesn't like europe

I don't understand what the big deal about BC is? Why do you NEED to play PS2 games on a PS3? You have to worry too much about compatibility, setting, and everything working. How about BC gets completely ripped out of the PS3, cutting it's cost, and allowing the PS3 to be what it's suppose to be.
Want to play PS2 games? Go buy a PS2 cheap almost ANYWHERE! If they didn't worry about bullshit BC from the start, it could have saved more money from the start (not having to spend money on the million things that came up trying to do BC) and that money saved could have been used to go buy yourself a nice PS2 for a cheap price somewhere with no worries about compatibility.
No, keep bitching about BC so we can all pay more for something only a handful of PS3 owners actually want.
dancingtosirens @ Aug 20th 2008 2:53PM
Because some people like to be able to do everything they want on one console. Why the hell should people be expected to pay an extra 50-100 for a ps2 or ps1 just to play old games when BC really isn't very hard to implement?
Both the Wii and the 360 have backwards compatibility, so people expect the ps3 to also.
In all honesty, I wasn't going to buy a ps3 back when I did. But when I heard the 60 gigs were being discontinued and BC was going to be shafted, I picked one up right away and Im glad that I have the ability ti play ps2/ps1 games if I need to (and trust me, I need to. I have been playing old ps1/2 games a lot recently)
kevin @ Aug 20th 2008 5:01PM
"360 have backwards compatibility"
for barely any games and seriously i got an 80 gig and i bought a ps3 to go hi def gaming and amazing online not to be stuck playin some old ass game
David @ Aug 20th 2008 4:06PM
Playing your games with a Playstation 2 looks terrible on High Def TVs... only the Playstation 3 can upscale the resolution of the games so it looks acceptable
Arnon @ Aug 20th 2008 4:50PM
Not to mention if you had the faulty PS2 hardware problem of it not reading discs T_T.. I don't have the 60gb model.. and I don't have $500.. so now I'm screwed.
Devin @ Aug 20th 2008 5:25PM
@Arnon
One way to help you in getting a PS3 w/ BC is to sell your old PS2 (my friend sold his 8 months ago for around $93 after fees on ebay w/ 2 wired DS2's).
Rob @ Aug 21st 2008 2:41AM
Sorry, but it's not "easy to implement." They couldn't even implement it properly the first time so they loaded the original consoles with EE chips until they could properly emulate the games instead. The development for that emulation cost money, the EE chips in every PS3 cost even more money.
BC raised the initial cost of the system like crazy, and because they spent so much money and time into it, it raised all their production cost, which are then put into the price of the system. If it was NEVER even considered, it would have been a considerable amount of money saved right off the bat.
Again, the majority of people want to play the PS3 on their HDTV screens.. most PS2 games don't even look attractive running through the PS3 (sorry).. it's just not worth the extra cost. I'm all about SAVING MONEY, and those who WANT it can USE the SAVED money on a PS2..
By The Way... Who the hell doesn't have a PS2 anyway?
jrdragon @ Aug 22nd 2008 9:32PM
the reason for the complaining about BC is because of the lifespan of the PS2. sure it's cheap now to buy a new one but for how long is that going to be an option? there are some people who probably built a library of their PS2 games and still play them even now. with the PS3 having so few games as well this really puts a damper on wanting to own one.

I just want to know if the new 80GB offers a thermal redesign.....does anyone know?
friendlyguy25 @ Aug 20th 2008 2:30PM
Don't discontinue BC. I'm saving for that 80 gig now!
Gemini Ace @ Aug 20th 2008 2:34PM
Is there no software emulation for back compat like they use in the 360?
thinkofmeasmra @ Aug 20th 2008 3:05PM
the existing 80 gb has software emulation which doesnt support 100% all games. once the new 80gb & 160 gb models come out (and current 80 is discontinued), the answer to your question will be no
Anthony @ Aug 20th 2008 2:41PM
I kind of agree with rob. Ever since i got my ps3 I have only played ps2 about 5 times. Its still hooked up so if i wanna play it, I can.
Thiago @ Aug 20th 2008 2:42PM
I agree with Rob, I buy a 80 gig ps3 and NEVER play a ps2 title. The ps3 have a ton of amazing games só lets play ps3 \o/
One thing, in PSBlog have this: "The 160GB PS3 has all of the same functionality as the new 80GB PS3 that’s popping up on retailer shelves now, but obviously has twice the HDD space", so, will have or not BC?
AdrianXIII @ Aug 20th 2008 3:03PM
No.
justice @ Aug 20th 2008 5:01PM
for real?
fuck bc
i want ps3 games
and they are taking bc out cuz they'll launch that ps2 version that treton said on E3

btw i don care, don' wanna play my old god of war that ive finished 60 times.
i want this extra gigs and my god of war 3!
=)
thats the way i do homie
pushing to the max like brucie said!
Marc @ Aug 20th 2008 3:01PM
Whew! Thanks for the update, PS3Fanboy. I had kept meaning to get this off of Amazon, but was putting it off. They were sold out, but after refreshing the page a few times, I got my order in within the tiny, 2-minute window it was available. Yay!
I was hoping I could get the MGS4 pack while I could-I have 30 or so PS2 games (it was my only system last-gen, and I enjoyed it!), so BC was important to me!
ajiezer @ Aug 20th 2008 3:04PM
Andrew: Do U know if the new 160 gb PS3 will have 2 usb and no memory card reader?
ajiezer @ Aug 20th 2008 3:15PM
and also please if both cell and rsx will be 65 nm please
Devin @ Aug 20th 2008 4:04PM
I want to know the exact thing. Will there be a better thermal design than the 40GB? I really want to know this.
Christoph @ Aug 20th 2008 3:08PM
I just picked up my first PS3 on Monday and it was the MGS4 pack and this post is justifying my purchase further. Paying 40 dollars for BC seems like a good deal, as I would have bought MGS4 anyway.
As such, BC doesn't seem like a deal breaker to me, if you have that many PS2 games to play I would think you have a PS2, or if you really need, spend the 130 dollars and get a sleek, time-tested console.
On a side-note, the PS3 is apt to become my favorite console, Sony's approach of a sleek, high-end console, is what they delivered. They may not have the main share of the market, but they have delivered the high-end machine. I am blown away by the graphics and excited for the games coming out, and I'm even buying a new HDTV just for my PS3. Overall, I'm impressed.
iamkid @ Aug 20th 2008 6:49PM
i feel exactly the same way about the bc, and i always though wtf? its not important. good to hear you like the ps3, and also, congrats on the purchase!
The Collective @ Aug 20th 2008 3:08PM
Sony needs to realize that BC is very appealing to the average consumer. I'm disappointed in the fact that they are choosing to just ignore the very userbase that they are aiming at. That userbase would be the PS2 userbase that has not yet moved over to the PS3.
And does anyone know when Amazon will stop selling the MGS4 bundle? I sold my 60 GB a while back for bills and I'm planning on buying and 80 GB MGS4 bundle for BC. I hope they have it for the next 2-4 weeks.
ajiezer @ Aug 20th 2008 3:18PM
for what I read they're sold out but by the 28th of this month more will come
ajiezer @ Aug 20th 2008 3:20PM
but it's at lest the second time this months that the get out of stock so if I were you I would act fast
kentuckyfried @ Aug 20th 2008 7:34PM
Why is the ps2 BC that critical? Is everybody that has a ps2 trying to unload it onto Ebay, b/c I'd assume that for hardware that's that old is not going to sell that well..current market value seems to be $60-70 tops. Better to just keep it, especially if it's modded.
PSN ID -- TheUnforgivenII @ Aug 20th 2008 3:32PM
I totally agree with you. Guys, if you want to play your PS2 titles keep back your good ol'PS2, as I did.
Warner Young @ Aug 20th 2008 3:52PM
Whew! Glad I managed to get mine recently, even if it did take almost a month between order and delivery.
seedaripper1973 @ Aug 20th 2008 5:01PM
As a lot of the commentators have stated, i dont really see the need to play ps2 games on my ps3 (and i have a 60 gig launch model) i tried ONE game and thought, why the hell am i bothering??? i bought it to play ps3 games ( i still have my launch-read-fat Ps1, i still have my launch-again read-fat Ps2) if i was really interested in playing these games i would get these old systems out of my cupboard and hook them up to an old tv (on my 47in 1080p they look crap)...
that being said, i think i'll wait a while an stick (my 60gig) on ebay, make a load of profit and buy the 160gig version...BC? (before christ) meh...

Thank god for the SixthAxis, i recommend any Ps3 stalwart to go anywhere that 'joystiq' isnt involved...gggrrr

Ninja Matt @ Aug 20th 2008 4:10PM
1st off, people who want Ps2 BC most likely HAS a Ps2! Who cares, really? I never had a Ps2, so i dont care about BC, and i bet a lot of people are like me.. For the others, i guess you gotta bet the remaining 80's soon, sadly...
2nd, I read Sony was --eventually-- going make the 40gig BC compatible through a firmware update...It should be the same for the new 160 and 80. Correct me if im wrong, please.
seedaripper1973 @ Aug 20th 2008 4:11PM

Arnon @ Aug 20th 2008 4:52PM
You peeps don't realize that.. Buying the PS3 to play PS2 & PS1 games is like.. one of the big reasons to purchase one. I mean.. why would you want your PS2 and PS3 plugged in at the same time, just so you can play a game from last generation? It just makes sense to have it all on the newest model, yeah?
Devin @ Aug 20th 2008 5:29PM
It does make sense if you actually play them (which Sony is currently betting that the market isn't). Most of my friends with the 60GB's have played a PS2 game once or twice, but that's it (not that they may not later, but still....). Kind of defeats the purpose, right? What sucks for people such as yourself is that you are the type of person who would play your PS2 game, but the market wanted a cheaper price which sadly overlaps BC in the long run.
The-Unknown @ Aug 20th 2008 6:10PM
Sup everyone, I am glad I got the MGS4 bundle late July and I really wanted the BC because I have a ton of PS2 games that I really enjoy. I had a PS2 but got hardware issues and sold it. That's my take, if u need BC then hurry because this is your last chance!
Moe-Ali @ Aug 21st 2008 12:44AM
nice now i don't feel as bad .. im actually happy cuz i got an 80gig ngs4 pack
i was angry when i saw the 160 gig ps3 but then i read about the bc and i was happy

'iamkid said...

er..well you truly are 'akid' the sixthaxis is a website devoted to PS3 games..try googling it, before trying to act all clever ;)
And for some 'strange' reason my original post 'magically appeared' (even though i didn't press the link in my email-due to the fact i never recieved it)
strange goings on, at joystiq towers methinks...
Hmmmm...
silentshadowxp @ Aug 21st 2008 8:12PM
I was planning on buying a ps3 around this Christmas, but now that I see that there's not any backwards compatibility I just don't know. i had to sell my ps2 to buy a new 360, because the video card died in it, so now i might just have to buy another ps2 before i buy a ps3... Here's to hoping for a used BC ps3!
Ether02 @ Aug 22nd 2008 11:50PM
I play mostly ps2 games on my ps3 they are so many great classics.I wish sony would have kept the 80 giga b/c its just going to confuse consumers even more when they discontinue b/c and add more skews.
