SingStar firmware upgrade will allow PS2 disc swapping [Update]

Update: Slight change of plans; according to MTV Multiplayer, Sony isn't allowing you to export the music. Rather, there is an option to swap discs -- by pressing select during a session of SingStar on the PS3 and exchanging the disc for any PS2 SingStar game, you will be allowed to choose the songs from the PS2 disc. This is not permanent and you will need to have the PS2 disc in the drive in order to sing these songs.
Moreover, as one of our readers asked, there were those of you who were concerned that PS3s without backwards compatibility would lack this feature. No need to worry; Sony has stated a free patch is coming for current SingStar game and this new disc-swapping feature will now be standard on all future incarnations of the title.

What about those who don't have a backwards-compatible PS3...can't imagine that'll work for those of us who bought the 40 or the new 80gb...
Kodros @ Aug 20th 2008 3:28PM
You don't need any kind of PS2 innards to rip data from a DVD.
JaffaBoy @ Aug 20th 2008 3:28PM
Shouldn't matter...it's just ripping the tracks off the CD not actually playing the PS2 game itself.
ACEDoh @ Aug 20th 2008 3:17PM
This is great. I can pick up PS2 versions of this game for cheap and add the songs to my collection... Great idea...
emjayx @ Aug 20th 2008 3:21PM
This is EXCELLENT news.

Sony delivering value again.
I noticed that the PlayOn beta is offering NetFlix soon on PS3. Again cheaper than the competition (which forces to you buy a XBox Gold subscription)

Fantastic news, I found Singstar 80's on clearance for $15 at Target. Gonna pick it up today!
Tru-blu @ Aug 20th 2008 4:29PM
I agree. I've been waiting for Sony to put most of the tracks from SingStar 80's on the SingStar Store. Only a few are on there now. But now with the news, I'll just go and get SingStar 80's and rip it to the PS3 instead of waiting for the songs to get on the SingStar Store.

I was going to post the exact same thing. Not the newspaper part though, that's pretty specific.

That's cool and all, but IMO, all these types of games should be able to do this. In fact, they should go a step further and let you use your own MP3's off your HDD and generate gameplay from there. "Beats" on PSP did it and that game was awesome. Whichever company figures that out first is gonna make a lot of money (and piss off a lot of artists who want to suck us all dry)
Dr. Strangepork @ Aug 20th 2008 4:01PM
I never found Beats interpretation of my music to be all that accurate. It was nice to listen to my music while playing, but the button pressing and the beats in the songs rarely seemed to match up well.
Devin @ Aug 20th 2008 4:02PM
How is Singstar supposed to know the lyrics of a random Mp3 you rip to the game?
Also, question: if you rip the tracks from the PS2 version, do the music videos come, too? I'm lost on how it works.
gillyallan114 @ Aug 20th 2008 3:55PM
Watch now as the price of PS2 singstar titles rocket.
Dr. Strangepork @ Aug 20th 2008 4:04PM
I wonder if this will allow the full functionality of the PS3 SS with the old songs. Will it record my audio, video, etc? Will I be able to up load to the community my performances? What about the quality of the music videos?
At least this should help with the slowly percolating offers from the US store. I always thought all the PS2 songs should've been in the store from day one of the PS3 release.
Since there wasn't an update to the US store a few weeks ago, maybe this patch will be out this week! (Right).
Just hoping for the best for what is already a great game!
alkeels @ Aug 20th 2008 4:29PM
Do you think you will be able to rip the High School Musical - Sing It game, daughter keeps bugging me for High School Musical song on singstore but they just don't seem to come
mikey @ Aug 20th 2008 6:20PM
does this mean that sony can release a new firmware and ALL PS3 will work with ps2 games? hmmm damn it sony stop being jackasses and release the patch and make ALL consoles backwards compatible
Slaytan @ Aug 20th 2008 6:48PM
because people will buy the game cheap from gamestop, rip the songs, then return it for store credit.
Aerostratos @ Aug 20th 2008 6:06PM
Well that didn't take long. Sony giveth Sony taketh away.
Why can't they just upload all the songs to the singstore and let you download them if you have the disk. That would be fine by me.
Well when are we gonna get the wireless mics? Can we at least nail down a date for that?
Rowdehaj @ Aug 20th 2008 6:32PM
Europe disagrees with you.
Slaytan @ Aug 20th 2008 6:50PM
sorry, response was for Aerostratos

Well that bits and to think I was just going to buy Singstar for the PS3. I have three PS2 SingStar games in my house hold for the kids to play. I thought this would be a great feature. Heck with Lips out there you would think Sony would have allowed for this feature to be real. I think MS took an Idea from Sony and ran with it and made it better and so to me right now Lips looks like it would be more fun then SingStar.
Because when you have loads and I mean loads of songs on your Ipod and you can play them on the 360 that makes you really want to buy that game. Heck I could care less about buying a new Singing game and if you could have let your PS2 games stay on the PS3 to be played I would have been all over this.
I really have no need for buying either Lips or a new SingStar game but if I was going to buy a new one I would have bought the PS3 game over the 360 game seeing as the I know how that one would work over the other one.
But if I ever was to buy another singing game I might just have to buy Lips instead just because of the better features. So I hope Sony changes there minds and lets PS2 games stay on the PS3. Plus bring the Disney SingStar game to North America too.
Thomas Fogh @ Aug 21st 2008 5:16AM
Brilliant! Now do the same for Guitar Hero! :)
Chayot @ Aug 21st 2008 6:52AM
so if I have an imported Asia version PS3, my PS3 singstar will run in my system, but I don't think this will work on PS2 singstar game as most PS2 games are region lock,
Aaron @ Aug 22nd 2008 1:12AM
The reason they don't let you rip the songs to your hard drive is they would have to pay a second round of royalties for each song they have licensing agreements for PS2. Stupid, I know but that's how copyright agreements work. Rock Band 2 is charging $5 for the ripping feature to try and recover some of those costs.
