Quantic Dream president talks about Heavy Rain demo and DLC
Quantic Dream president David Cage has confirmed there will be playable demo of Heavy Rain. He indicated that he "wouldn't want to spoil the story" as it will surprise people due to its unusual-for-a-video-game nature. Eurogamer speculates that the demo will therefore most likely focus on the game's mechanics.
Apparently, the video that was released yesterday is a separate episode that is unrelated to the main plot, which prompted the question of whether there will be DLC episodes in the future. Cage agrees its a possibility, but concedes that it is simply too early to talk about. The interface of Heavy Rain is "entirely contextual" and therefore open to the possibility of other stories.
Our very own Jem Alexander just got some hands-on time with Heavy Rain at LGC, so stay tuned for more details about this PS3 exclusive!

cool, heavy rain sounds like its going to be a system seller, i hope the gameplay is great, i also hope they give us a date for when the demo will be released on psn, i really want to try it
JerJerBinks @ Aug 21st 2008 3:22PM
I am not entirely sure about that. Did you see the video? Based upon what I saw, the game's action sequences seem to be largely "quicktime" events. I don't know about you, but I like to play my games, rather and sit and try to time button presses. Hopefully this was just the demo, and that the game is a unique and fun game play experience.
anthonyjh @ Aug 21st 2008 5:48PM
Just because a games combat revolves around quick time, does not mean it will be a bad game. Combat in Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit was quick time events, but it wasn't to meat of the game. I imagine it will be the same deal with Heavy Rain.
frankym @ Aug 21st 2008 12:56PM
Despite the game getting much acclaim, apparently some people are freaked out, including myself, that the game will just be a series of QTE's.
This gameplay demo sounds like a really good idea.

I am one of those freaking out, from what I have read (which could be wrong),
"you only control the head and shoulders on the character, you just press a button to move forwards."
it feels more like an interactive movie than a game. Hopefully the Demo will prove me wrong.
will @ Aug 21st 2008 1:31PM
$60 for a movie? no thanks.
Jerses @ Aug 21st 2008 1:34PM
I remember when info about heavy rain was starting to see the light they where saying something about "interactive story" maybe this game is like dragons slayer..called a game but you just press a button and move a stick. But if thats the case...then why not make a CGI movie.
Zampano @ Aug 21st 2008 1:35PM
I would recommend checking out IGN's hands-on with this demo - it gives a better overview of how the game actually works, and how you have different choices in dealing with different scenarios (including the fact that if you mess up and the character you're controlling dies, the story continues with that character dead - not sure how that works, but it sounds pretty freakin' awesome). Sorry I don't have the link handy.
thinkofmeasmra @ Aug 21st 2008 1:43PM
@3
Dont forget though alot of critics described MGS4 as an "interactive movie" (as would i) and its arguably the best game ever made
What you described does leave appropriate room to worry though
reson8er @ Aug 21st 2008 12:56PM
Another on my list of must-have. 2009 is going to be an expensive year...
Eric E @ Aug 21st 2008 12:57PM
i thought the picture was of the president until i recognized him from the most recent video.
ToXicDecree @ Aug 21st 2008 1:03PM
This is going to be an awesome game. Cant wait for the demo
strike @ Aug 21st 2008 1:09PM
That guy has a lot of meat on his face :P
Seriously, I'm not to interested in the game. I havent seen anything that makes me want to buy it, but that can be changed :)
Kholar @ Aug 21st 2008 1:14PM
To all of the people that are freaked out and scared that the gameplay will suck, this game is pretty much an adventure game i.e Myst. If you think of it that way you won't get your hopes up once you actually get your hands on it.
jgstyle @ Aug 21st 2008 1:17PM
This game is (unfortunately) vaporware.
It's not coming out until 2010, correct? Why do they keep showing these insipid teases? Who cares? They'll probably shelve it or go broke before they finish it.
I know the news cycle in the video games industry is kind of set in stone right now, but somebody has to take the lead and stop reporting on the games 2 years (and sometimes more!) out from when they will hit the shelves.
I just don't care to read about something that I can't get my hands on in about 6 months. That should be all the lead time these developers require. Sheesh!
Heavy Rain. What a joke. Quantic Dream, just keep it to yourselves until it's ready, ok?
Brokensword @ Aug 21st 2008 1:47PM
While I don't totally agree with you, I'm starting to feel that way. There are so many game that are years from coming out so why keep talking about them so early? It's getting crazy now. If it's not coming out with in a year I really don't wanna keep hearing about them anymore!
saito ps3 @ Aug 21st 2008 1:24PM
jgstyle, go and bash heavy rain somewhere else, its obvious you dont like ps3 because in a recent post on ps3fanboy, it clearly says 2009, which is next year if you need help, and kinda weird how the 1st post you make is a bashing one, are you from xbox360fanboy? heres the link if you think im bs'ing http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/heavy-rain-confirmed-for-2009/
will @ Aug 21st 2008 1:32PM
not correct. 2009.
Waqman @ Aug 21st 2008 1:36PM
2009 you freaking idiot. You're a whole year off. And vaporware? Do you even know what that word means? Duke Nukem Forever is VAPORWARE because it was announced 10 years ago and never sees the light of day (even at games conferences). Heavy Rain was only announced like 2 years ago and they have show ALOT this year. And its slated to release next year. Go get a brain mate.
And to all the people bashing this game, well maybe you should also learn not to be so ignorant. Its an ADVENTURE game. The kind where you go around and investigate and search for clues. Aswell as making game-altering decisions. I'm excited for it, I haven't played a game like this since the last Monkey Island!
HAAS599 @ Aug 21st 2008 2:49PM
thank you Waqman
I still enjoy a good top-down shooter, side scroller, and yes, an adventure game.
I admit I enjoyed Freddy the Fish, Neverhood, and Grim Fandango. When did adventure games die?
man-gravy @ Aug 21st 2008 1:34PM
I thought it was out 2009? Same as Killzone 2
SnazzyD @ Aug 21st 2008 2:21PM
jgstyle said...a whole lot of nothing.
How is that "they keep showing these insipid teases"? I believe this is the first time it has EVER been shown, so your inflammatory comments are about 10 months early. I'm sure you'll be back next Summer.
Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Go somewhere else to incite a riot, awright?
advil @ Aug 21st 2008 2:26PM
This game looks really good graphically (obviously), but the game play looks like Dragon's Lair of the 80's. Watch a movie and hit a button or direction in the precise time and watch what happens; die, or live.
I guess we'll have to wait (a while yet!) and see.
_LarZen_ @ Aug 21st 2008 2:29PM
Heavy Rain seams to be a more advance type of game like Fahrenheit. And that beeing one of the best games I have ever played im going crazy waiting for Heavy Rain!!
Gambit07 @ Aug 21st 2008 3:03PM
I think I completely understand where they're going with this game, basically what I'm thinking is you will be able to play as multiple characters and if one of they dies, the dead person will be part of another characters story as dead and if you kill someone, that will be incorporated in another characters story. It will have multiple branches, but maybe a few endings. I wouldn't be surprised if you can even play as the origami killer too, to expand his side of the story. When David Cage was talking about the player will be the director and stuff, I believe that's what he meant.
mezzanine @ Aug 21st 2008 5:23PM
I neeeeeed this game.
HanzoTheRazor @ Aug 22nd 2008 8:23AM
Very special game from SONY's second best studio after Team ICO. A must buy!
HanzoTheRazor @ Aug 22nd 2008 9:00AM
What the nOOb's & ingnorant need to realise is that this is an adventure game, "NOT" an action or a shooter, adventure. I tell u, xbot fanboys must get a real kick when they read some peopls dim witted posts here! If u want mindless, dumb ass playing, go play Gears. There is only 1 other studio in SONY's pack that is as amazing and special as QD and they are Team ICO. HR will define the PS3 and make it get taken more seriously by all. A very special game amongst a lot of mindless shovelware, can't wait for 09 & HR!
