How much would you pay for the wireless keypad?
An amazon.com listing shows the newly announced PS3 wireless keypad arriving on November 30th for $50. While this date and price is far from final, we were wondering how much our readers would pay for this peripheral. We're thinking $50 is a bit too high, and we're hoping this is nothing more than a placeholder price from the online retailer.

why do I want this when I have a real mouse and keyboard hooked up to it?
TJ @ Aug 26th 2008 5:11PM
I dont need this either but I wouldnt pay more than 30 bucks for it. Even thats alittle high. 50 is the price of a controler which is used all the time. How often are you gonna use this thing?! Maybe if a game were to come out to use it but that would be rediculous.
XGM @ Aug 26th 2008 12:12AM
Exactly, like honestly thats going to make the controller top heavy and also look retarded. 20$ USB keyboard FTW !!!
Da @ Aug 26th 2008 12:50AM
Try more like $100+ for a bluetooth keyboard, and justify (to your girlfriend.. sigh) having that fulltime in the living room, especially when 90% of typing I do is simple 'COD. Now' messages and filling out a few forms.
It's a great compact idea, I was going to get the logitech mini keyboard, but it's not cheap. Happy to pay around $40 for this (which is honestly a reasonable price), $50 is pushing it a little.
Eggy @ Aug 26th 2008 6:59AM
Since when have controllers looked nice? They have to be functional and seeing that you haven't had this one in your hand you can't really judge it.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Aug 26th 2008 12:14PM
im with Da. i really wanted to get a keyboard for my PS3 but i wasnt crazy about having a full one. i was seriously considering the Logitech DiNovo Mini but i figured it wouldnt be able to turn the console off and on, requiring me to have the controller by me anyway. i think this is the best solution.
so i was thinking around $30 is what i would pay but i would probably pay $50 anyway for it. the DiNovo Mini is like $150 and i was gonna buy that, so $50 isnt that bad.
Lars @ Aug 26th 2008 3:21PM
Yeah, I was using my old Playstation2 keyboard and mouse, then I snagged a wireless set for about $20 (unfortunately not bluetooth, hence the cheap cost).
So I wouldn't pay much for a cramped little thumboard like this. Though I would buy it if it was cheap enough, because it would be more convenient... as long as it doesn't have a dongle. Dongle = FAIL.
Lars @ Aug 26th 2008 3:26PM
Oh, but also, $50 wouldn't surprise me since that's about what everyone else charges for their crappier thumboards... and that's why I never bought one.
vahdyx @ Aug 25th 2008 9:38PM
Well with today's economy, I'd pay $20 or less for something i don't need.
My wireless keyboard works just fine
kevin @ Aug 25th 2008 11:36PM
exactly and i saw they had a sale on circuit city for the bluetooth logitech ps3 wireless keyboard with the touch pad for 45 bucks
way better than some keyboarding making ur controller 100 pounds.
ahsayuninew @ Aug 25th 2008 9:36PM
I type fast enough using the onscreen keyboard that people think I'm using a physical one. I don't need this.
Cory @ Aug 25th 2008 9:40PM
I'm with you you I've gotten really good at using the controller to type. Plus if need to I'll just plug in my wireless keyboard.
SuperGayParade @ Aug 25th 2008 9:40PM
right now I use a dongled keyboard and mouse I got for $30. I'd pay $30 I think for this if it got good enough reviews
Come Get Me!!! @ Aug 25th 2008 9:43PM
dont need it.....plus my fingers are too big.
CL34N3R @ Aug 25th 2008 9:44PM
It's $30 for the xbox version and that comes with a headset, so I'd say no more than $20.
benny boy @ Aug 26th 2008 6:27AM
It is an actual bluetooth keyboard that can also be used as a touchpad for browsing the internet etc. It's not just an add-on. I'm pretty sure they said it works just like any other bluetooth keyboard and is compatible with other devices.
It looks like it has good build quality and to be honest, I wouldn't mind paying £20 ($40) for this. After playing on home, this is definitely needed as it takes WAY too long to type anything out on the on-screen keyboard and I don't really want to leave a full-sized keyboard lying around the living room.
black_ryuk @ Aug 25th 2008 9:46PM
I'm pretty good at typing without it already....but if it was $20 I would consider it
The Aggie CEO @ Aug 25th 2008 11:01PM
$50!?!?!?
Them dumb fucks are dumber than I thought if they think the shit will sell at that price.......
I BARELY wanna pay $30 for it........
but $50 will make me save another $70 and just get a Logitech BlueTooth Keyboard.......
KRIS_C_123 @ Aug 25th 2008 9:46PM
wel since im from the uk and it would cost about double the price anywhere else, so im not buying it unless it works with bluetooth enabled phones (not sure if it does, if someone could clear that up)
actually even if it does work with phones i wont be getting it, i never use my phone
mjcobb22 @ Aug 26th 2008 8:45AM
yes they said it would when they first released it. look back at previous articles.
Metal_Gear @ Aug 25th 2008 9:47PM
I'd pay about £30 now for one, any more and I'd have to wait but only because they are bring out too many games.
Too many... is that possible...
It may end up on my Xmas list with Home on its way out too I'll need it, I suck at the on screen keyboard then again, on Home I wont be rushing to type something before I get headshotted in MGO :|
Reefer @ Aug 25th 2008 9:47PM
$49.99 is definitely too much. While, $24.99-29.99 would be a better sweet spot. personally the short cuts to friends and messages is what really caught my attention. also since, it is a bluetooth qwerty you can also use it with other bluetooth enabled devices which is also a plus. I do woder what the comfort factor will be like with games using the R1 & L1 for primary functions.
Reefer @ Aug 25th 2008 9:50PM
from what I read it will work with other bluetooth devices for Qwerty
Name: @ Aug 25th 2008 9:50PM
no more than $35 and thats pushing it. I do like the fact that it is a Sony.
travi @ Aug 25th 2008 10:08PM
I'd say $20-30, I paid $27 for my bluetooth wireless foldaway keyboard I use right now.
Mark @ Aug 25th 2008 9:51PM
i'd buy this for $20. ill buy a second controller before i buy this this for $50.
McBonk @ Aug 26th 2008 7:21AM
That second controller going to help you type faster?
Neil @ Aug 25th 2008 9:55PM
30 bucks, but not a penny more....50 bucks is too high for a keyboard pad even if it is bluetooth.
ramiltonii @ Aug 25th 2008 9:59PM
what about taxes? :)
Neil @ Aug 25th 2008 11:00PM
@ramiltonii
LOL....ok maybe a few pennies more. :P
Kholar @ Aug 25th 2008 9:54PM
OK, Who is the wiseguy that voted $60 or more??
vipeness @ Aug 25th 2008 10:25PM
NO WAY!!!!!!! The 360 chat pad is waaaaayyyyy cheaper... when i saw the device, i was like, yeah 24.99 for sure.... 50.00!!!! sony, stop being greadie... you already got 27 lotus's.
Kspraydad @ Aug 25th 2008 11:49PM

$40 or less for 1st party quality, convenience. Has its own battery and BT so can be used seperately or attached (unlike the cheaper versions from X and MadCatz)...dedicated buttons are a win and it won't take up a ton of space in the entertainment area.
Daniel @ Aug 25th 2008 10:05PM
What you people seem to realize is that this is blue tooth enabled and can be used a a mouse (laptop style) by pressing a button and then rubbing your fingers over the keyboard. The Blue tooth allows you to use it with any blue tooth enabled device. Plus it can be used sepearate of the controller. I would much rather use this than to use a full sized keyboard and mouse.
Jack @ Aug 25th 2008 10:07PM
I'd pay 30 for it. but no more then that. and even 30 is iffy. if it was like 19 dollars then I'd buy it in a heart beat
and the dude who put 60 or more is hilarious
Daniel @ Aug 25th 2008 10:09PM
Forgot to say how much I'd pay for it. While $50 is a little steep for an add on like this, because of the tech and the convenience factor and the fact that it's a keyboard and a mouse in one...and the fact that it is first party, makes it worth it IMO. If it were less, of course I'd be happy to pay less but I still don't mind paying $50 for it and I am definitely planning on getting this.
ryan @ Aug 25th 2008 10:22PM
well of course everyone's gonna say $20 or less!
i will say i'd pay nothing for it. should be on the bottom.
Da @ Aug 26th 2008 12:53AM
why?
I'd happily pay $40, its a good quality first party accessory that actually seems useful and well thought out.
John-Paul-Jones @ Aug 25th 2008 10:28PM
I definitely don't want a full-sized keyboard and mouse sitting on the coffee table. This is nice, but I don't know how placing the keyboard at the top of the controller would fare out compared to the Xbox 360 keyboard add-on. It seems like you have to stretch a bit more to access the top keys. I'm also fearing that the front weight will be pushed downwards. Let's hope not.
I think it's at a reasonable price, though.
Fane @ Aug 26th 2008 5:35PM
I think you're meant to shift your hands upward when you type, so that your ring fingers rather than your middle fingers are "locked" into the underside "grips" on the DS3. I have, of course, never held the device, so I could be wrong.
Makoto99 @ Aug 25th 2008 10:33PM
I'd pay about $30 or so. It has 2 things going against it:
1. The keypad looks very awkwardly placed above the controller itself. Maybe it'll work, but it doesn't seem as convenient as the Xbox's placement.
2. It looks like a chastity belt for your DualShock. Not pretty.
Albanian_Killa @ Aug 25th 2008 10:46PM
$20 is the most I would be willing to pay, but only because I already have a USB Keyboard I use. Still, if they put this up for $20, they can expect a lot of sales.
Iain @ Aug 25th 2008 10:50PM
Seeing I bought by sixaxis's for $20, I'd spend no more on this.
ok fine $30 at most.
David Propst @ Aug 25th 2008 11:00PM
30 bucks tops. i like because it's SONY, but i already have a logitech buletooth keyboard with a built-in mouse. but i probably will get it anyway, because i already have over 6000 dollars in my ps3 setup. psn id smokeon
OAKside @ Aug 25th 2008 11:01PM
Why Sony'd design, create and sell something like this is beyond me. At $40-50 it's an insult. Maybe there's one or two (crappy) games that need fast typing? (and don't support a USB keyboard?!) I don't get it. FOCUS, Sony!
Daniel @ Aug 25th 2008 11:12PM
Do you people not realize this is intended for HOME? Who wants to walk around with their controller, set it down and type for a while and then pick up their controller again and walk around, etc. It puts it all in one place for you.
I don't get how you all pay so much for games, your system, your tv etc. yet won't pay a measly $50 for a conveinent keyboard add-on.
Tolkienfanatic @ Aug 25th 2008 11:17PM
I wouldn't pay $50 that's for sure... $20 seems more feasible.
required @ Aug 25th 2008 11:34PM
Using the controller to type makes typing a game (there should be trophies for words per minute) so I don't need a keyboard, but if I did I'd say $30 max
