Let's review: all the PS3 SKUs
There's been some confusion about all the various PS3 models that are available. Sony has introduced, and discontinued, so many different SKUs over the PS3's relatively short lifespan so far. Did you know, with the discontinuation of the Metal Gear Solid 4 model, there will only be two SKUs on the market? And did you know that neither will have backwards compatibility? Check out Joystiq's handy reference guide to see the stats of each SKU -- and if make sure you've nabbed the system that fits your needs exactly!

My 60gig is still going strong
adolson @ Aug 26th 2008 9:56AM
Why is there a "No" that is colored green? Doesn't green mean "Yes"?
adolson @ Aug 26th 2008 9:58AM
Eh, nevermind, it's not like that on Joystiq, just the image here.
Andrew Yoon @ Aug 26th 2008 11:33AM
Yeah, we used an early version of the chart to make this post.
dan @ Aug 26th 2008 4:31PM
plus the "no" should say "yes"

I have a 60GB, but my PS3 has been screwing up. Grand Theft Auto IV won't go past the first two Rockstar logos (the music still plays, but no image), and every time I hit the PS button on the controller to go to the XMB, it freezes up with the spinning load icon, while everything goes black. I'm pretty upset, since I don't want to lose my investment. Sony better release 2.43, dammit!
Bigman73 @ Aug 26th 2008 10:39AM
Similar problem here - 60GB with RFOM/DIRT keeps hanging..
I think some of these 60GB are just defective. Very annoying.

I had a similar problem with GTA4, all I did was Change my ps3 to be vertical rather than horizontal, and if I begin having problems again I switch it back.(right now its horizontal)
I also punched it a few times, but all that did was make it rattle when the fans turn on, I'm not sure if it actually helped...
ClarkyCat @ Aug 26th 2008 12:14PM
My launch day 60GB recently stopped reading disks altogether, and I'm expected to pay €250 to get it fixed. Seeing as this makes a cool 4/5 of my Sony consoles broken, I think I shant. A gamer without a console, what will become of me.
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Aug 26th 2008 12:28PM
GTA4 had damaged the drive on my 60gb PS3 back in May, has happened to many.
The PS3s are suffering from faulty drives. The newer models hopefully have a better drive but then lack the PS2 BC the 60gb model has.
I've stopped hearing of 360 build quality problems and hear of PS3s breaking since GTA4 and MGS4 came out, breaking some PS3s......
Damn it Sony!!!! : (
Come Get Me!!! @ Aug 26th 2008 12:31PM
hey dude if you have an external hard drive then backup and reformat the ps3 hdd,i was having the same issue as well(freezing, three beeps etc) once i did that my 60 gig works like a charm!!!
it may be something to try if you have the time homie!!!
Mr. Alexander @ Aug 27th 2008 9:11AM
I have a 20 gig ....yeah I know it sucks....yeah I know I can now get one with 8 times the capacity for the same price.......regardless mine has ran just fine never given me any type of problem........I am happy with it even though I now feel robbed...lol oh well early adopters usually get hit the worst....::cough cough:: Iphone.......lol
sheamus @ Aug 26th 2008 10:29AM
It is a shame. So many of my non-hardcore gaming friends see my (60GB) PS3, and love the fact that it has backwards compatibility, and the card reader.
I don't have the heart to tell them that they will have a tough time finding one, with any of those things.

I'm glad I got my 60GB. Special thanks to Joystiq for informing me that backwards compatibility would be a thing of the past on the PS3 prompting me to go buy one a month before the 60GB's bit the dust.
But really, all those SKU's really shows that Sony had no effing clue what they were doing. It's really quite sad.
Huschke @ Aug 26th 2008 11:00AM
Wrong! All those SKU's only show that Sony made the PS3 more and more cost efficient in order to NOT lose money on every single console sold.
dead @ Aug 26th 2008 10:54AM
hehehe 60gb ftw!
anyone know how much it can be sold for? not gunna sell mine, but i wanna know how much people want this thing for BC.
@zack and bigman: that sucks guys, hope sony fixes those probs, i wish it doesnt happen to me either.
jondastunna84 @ Aug 26th 2008 10:56AM
Long Live thew 60 Gig PS3
best version to date!!
Tolkienfanatic @ Aug 26th 2008 11:09AM
*hugs 60 GB PS3*
bambino @ Aug 26th 2008 11:33AM
Meh.. Software BC will be coming back soon enough. Maybe not next year.. but definitely by 2010 imo. That's the only feature I wish my 40 gig had.
Mike @ Aug 26th 2008 12:56PM
im so lucky i got my motorstorm bundle when i did all i had to do was go out and get a DS3 when they came out been on standby ever since i got it (of course i dust it off everyday tho lol)
John-Paul-Jones @ Aug 26th 2008 7:14PM
Motorstorm bundle owner here, too!
jason @ Aug 26th 2008 12:57PM
The MGS4/Motorstorm 80GB SKU has a 65nm Cell if built in 2008!?? That's the first I've heard of that. I thought that all of those had a 90nm Cell regardless of year built.
Can anyone else confirm or provide a link to more details of that?
Dolgo @ Aug 26th 2008 1:05PM
With the upcoming 160 gig hard drives I believe BC is forever dead in a new system. Sony will introduce PS2 games via the PSN store for sale in the near future. Just my prediction.
Galley @ Aug 26th 2008 1:23PM
Where's the column for SACD support?
John S @ Aug 26th 2008 1:59PM
I'd actually be willing to sell my 60GB PS3. I still have a launch PS2 working pretty well. I doubt I can get any money out of it. I wonder how much I could get for the PS3.
Mike @ Aug 26th 2008 2:18PM
why dont u just upgrade your hdd the 60 gig is the best one, the old 80 gig and the uncharted bundle are the same thing (uncharted is just an upgraded stock hdd version of the old 80 gig and for some reason the disk spins in on newer models) anyway, the motor storm bundle (on the chart) says that theres no flash reader when there is, and ill buy that 60 gig if ur lookin to sell it (if its in good shape) if i were u id put that shit up on ebay the 60 gigs are rare dude.
John S @ Aug 26th 2008 5:09PM
It's definitely in good shape. My PS2 is still in good shape. I played GTA4/MGS4 without any hiccups either.
I looked on ebay to see what they were going for-ranged from $350-450. I don't trust people on ebay though. How much would you pay for it Mike?
I never use the flash card reader. Most USB ports used ever at the same time = 1. Played GOW2 on the PS3, it didn't look so hot on my hdtv, so I just finished it on my PS2 on another tv.
Name: @ Aug 26th 2008 2:07PM
Thats funny. Ok, anyone who wants bc that bad go buy a 160 gig and I will trade you my 60 gig straight up. I'm sorry. I can see where you guys are comin from. I mean, there just is not enough PS3 games out, or another 70- 80 more comin out in the next 6 or 7 months I'm sure. Time to go to PLAN C Sony, give'm a 200 gig with bc that wipes their asses for them for free. You know so some of you simple minded dousch bags will be happy.
John S @ Aug 26th 2008 5:12PM
hahah sounds like a fair trade to me. I'd put my 60gig up for that too minus the attitude.
MikeDawg @ Aug 26th 2008 2:41PM
that 20g looks ugly...no wireless, no card readers, and worst of all no trim?....no man can go without trim!!!!
Fane @ Aug 26th 2008 5:57PM
Yeah. You've got to get some trim whenever you can.
ChocoDK @ Aug 26th 2008 3:48PM
I didn't know that earlier PS3 models came with an Ethernet Cable packed in. Not that it is important because I already have my PS2 hooked up with one and could use it on my PS3 but that is interesting to know. Oh well I am happy with my 40GB but only wish sometimes it had more USB slots instead of two (but I got a solution for that). Thanks for posting this table up as I learnt new stuff.
A person @ Aug 26th 2008 4:20PM
I love my 20 gigger.
AdrianXIII @ Aug 26th 2008 5:57PM
The 40s(and N80) don't have the same Chrome as the 60 and 80s. They're of a different quality. I'm not even sure its chrome. It's much dull.....just sayin
Thomas @ Aug 26th 2008 6:42PM
PS3 is a good piece of hardware, but these 2 usb slots, and no card readers, no BC, just takes away alot of luster of the PS3 system.
francisco @ Aug 27th 2008 1:29AM
OMG thanks for showing me this picture! i though ps3 came out for 3 years already haha. I was like how come ps3 doesn't have that many games? until i saw this pic i was like OMG not even 2 years!?!? ahaha sweeet i have HIGH hopes for ps3 first year was a down 2nd it's been dominating sell against xbox 360 lol sweet :P
