Sony revises battery life statement: says Brite will be the same
It seems like Sony crammed a bit more magic juice into the upcoming PSP Brite (PSP-3000). Before, they claimed that the upcoming hardware revision would have a slightly shortened battery life. However, a new post on the PlayStation.blog says otherwise. John Koller admits that the "screen of the new PSP draws a little more power" but he claims that "our engineers in Japan worked to reduce the power consumption of the overall system including its components." As such, final battery life on the Brite series will be nearly identical to that of the previous model: "about 4 to 6 hours for games and about 4 to 5 hours for UMD videos," says the post.

Will the extended battery work with the Brite?
McDoobie @ Sep 3rd 2008 4:10PM
4-6 hours? I barely get 3 (yes, brightness is on the lowest setting).
Andrew Yoon @ Sep 3rd 2008 4:10PM
That's what I was thinking too...
Jacksons @ Sep 3rd 2008 4:31PM
They've got to be counting store downloaded games or something. 6 is ridiculous.
andwhyisit @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:53PM
Depends on the battery you use.
If your PSP's battery life sucks then get a better battery.

I Find if I've got my PSP on its lowest brightness and Headphones on, When the volume is turned down low I can get around 5, 5 and a half max

With the PSP and its console bro, Sony has a knack for fixing stuff and leaving all the main problems untouched. It's pretty remarkable at this point.

Wow, so much for all excitement due to the previously stated "shorter battery life" it's funny how Sony tends to listen to consumers on occasion when they complain. After Mr. John Koller made that statement, the folks over at Sony most likely did absolutely nothing, except wait until the hype died down and then make this announcement without changing a thing to hardware.. (although software may have been optimized the slightest)

I've heard this before.
"We've overcome the problem of having vibration and motion controls in our controller(DS3) thanks to our brilliant engineers and their new found technology." They said something along those lines. Face it, you've done nothing. Stop trying to look cool.

With my screen off I get 12 hours. I have my screen off to listen to music on long trips. Just as good as the average MP3 player.

how much better is the original battery against the slim version?
Zippon @ Sep 3rd 2008 6:49PM
I dunno about the "original" battery, but I have the extended (2200mAh) vs the slims (1200mAh). The increase in play time should only be about 80%, based on the raw numbers. But in reality it more than doubled. I went from just shy of 4 hours playing games to about 9 or 10. Single best purchase I ever made. Glad now that I stocked up on 2 more batteries when TRU clearanced them a while back. :-)
Jacksons @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:36PM
Zippon,
Isn't that odd? I get the same results, around 4 before, 9-10 after. It doesn't add up, but I can't complain :)

Good, the same battery life should be a bare minimum goal to hit (at least with a system that has fairly poor battery life at the moment). I've got a 2000 (and I'll be sticking with it), but if I was looking to buy my first psp I would have hated having to make the choice between the two. Now it'd be a easy choice for a first psp, but not enough to make me want to upgrade my system. How about some games instead.
Manuel @ Sep 3rd 2008 7:38PM
I don't understand where you guys are getting the "no more extended battery".
You would think they would still try to extend it any way.
THOUGH I agree that this statement should also say, "oh and btw, we have the secret of life in our labs, our R&D have effectively put it into the PSP code."
It'd been all the same to me.
Alien @ Sep 4th 2008 9:11AM
Well Ive always got ~ 5 hours of gameplay time with my PSP, but in the same time every single game uses different amount of juice ( from my experience ). If it will remain the same its OK for me :)
