Ask PSP Fanboy: Volume 38
It's the end of the week, which calls for a new volume of Ask PSP Fanboy! Each week we'll collect your questions, and each weekend a new volume of Ask PSP Fanboy will appear on the front page. If you've got a question, send an email to justin.eaton @ weblogsinc .com with the subject "Ask PSP Fanboy."

Q. I work for a well-known store and everybody wants to know, what is the new PSP like? Does it play the same games? Does it have it's own memory card or a built-in one?
A. The PSP Brite (PSP-3000) will be very similar in physical appearance and size, with some notable differences including a brighter, glare-resistant LCD screen, and a built-in microphone. It will still play your UMD games, and depending on the pack you purchase, may come with a 1GB or 4GB memory stick.
Q. Will the PSP-3000 have support for Dualshock 3 controllers?
A. Sony has not released any information regarding Dualshock compatibility with the PSP-3000, however we did discover this patent a while back, so it's certainly a [future] possibility.
Q. Hey, I have a PSP-2000 and I don't have a HDTV. I was wondering if I could buy a Component AV cable and have it work for a normal TV until I get an HD one? I know it can't show games but does it still have the right plug-ins for a normal TV?
A. As long as your TV supports the proper inputs (in this case, component), you shouldn't have trouble with video output. Chances are, if you don't have a HDTV, you don't have component inputs.
Q. The new features on the PSP Brite are exciting, but have you heard if they are revamping security against hackers and pirates? I was thinking one of the reasons for the 3000 is better security.
A. We do believe that some of the internal changes in the PSP Brite may have something to do with improved security against homebrew and piracy, although, again, no official information has been released at this time. We'll go into greater detail as the information becomes more clear.
Q. I have a question regarding cases for the PSP-2000 Series. I use the Sony case, but it's massive and has too many sharp corners. Is Logitech planning on releasing a case similar to the PlayGear Pocket but designed for the newer slim model?
A. Believe it or not, they've already released the PlayGear Pocket Slim, which was specifically re-designed for the PSP-2000. You're in luck!
Q. If this site is for the PSP, why isn't it more PSP browser friendly? Every time I access the site through my PSP, whether it's PSPfanboy or PS3fanboy, it takes very long to load, regardless of my connection speed.
A. Try visiting our mobile site from your PSP, m.pspfanboy.com. That site should load much faster, and you won't miss anything we post on the front page.
Q. I recently read in the UK's official PSP magazine that the PSP was capable of Hi Def video playback. They didn't elaborate, so can you? Is this possible? If so, how do you get HD videos onto the PSP?
A. Technically speaking, the PSP is capable of video playback up to 480 x 272 pixels, because that's the resolution of the screen. High-definition video usually refers to 1280×720 pixels (720p) or higher (1080i, 1080p). However, PSP can only playback video of up to 480p (720x480).

i have a question, when/is there is a new psp firmware coming out and what do you think it will contain?
Ben @ Sep 6th 2008 11:21PM
I think the question regarding hackers had more to do with people remotely turning off other people's PSPs in games like Medal of Honor Heroes and SOCOM FTB2.
Another interesting article.
I rather like these.

i've got a question, is it true that the batteries for psp 1000 and 2000 won't be compatible with psp 3000?
Nick @ Sep 7th 2008 12:38AM
Yep it's true, So now no one will be able to make a pandoras battery so that they can hack it.
Kspraydad @ Sep 7th 2008 12:33AM
I can NEVER use the mobile site to read the comments properly...
I've devised my own gateway here:

nice site.
I use www.iyhy.com
it will convert any website to text and save a list of site you visit
TO PSPFANBOY: your mobile website is really just a cruel tease. All you get are the headlines and when you click a link your brought back to the main site. Really doesnt help someone with a psp, just teases them about the info they could be getting.
JayD-1K @ Sep 9th 2008 7:01AM
i would to be able to read the comments as well! it realy is just a tease.
PSP/PS3 fanboy, would you be able to design the mobile site in a way that, it would allow ust to read/post to the comments section?
aj @ Sep 7th 2008 12:36AM
But is the PSP's screen even a hi-def screen? What is the point of having hi-def TV output on the thing when you're not using it for hi-def content?
Is this something to do with that idiotic FCC rule that all TV has to be hi-def by 2012 or whatever? Is everyone expected to just go out and buy a 3,000$ TV, or what?
jordanpories @ Sep 7th 2008 9:29AM
its not HD, it's Digital. That means if you have an antenna tv, you need to get a converter box. So if you don't have directv, dish network, comcast, or verizon, you're in trouble
NeoRaiden @ Sep 7th 2008 10:38AM
WHat? That doesn't even make sense. He was wondering if it played back HD content through video OUTPUT so it WOULD be on an HD display.
And get your facts straight. It's digital signal by 2009 to clear up all analog frequencies that TV currently uses. They don't even make SDTVs anymore. So even if we were forced to change to HD in 2012 it wouldn't cost $3000. Quit living in the past. You can get a standard size 26 inch HDTV for about $400-500. And a big screen 40 inch for $900. I can't even imagine how much in price these would go down by 2012. 26 inch = $250? Like normal TVs were. Like I said, quit living in the past.
Alex @ Sep 7th 2008 9:34AM
Thanks for the answer regarding the site and the speed.
I had another question regarding the output of sound from the PSP, is this a problem that everyone experiences? I feel the volume of the sound is too low... and the feature for leveling the volume is off.. I'm talking about the max volume. Any solutions?
Mafiacrooks @ Sep 7th 2008 3:25AM
The PGP Slim is still not out, the Site still says Notify Me!
Alien @ Sep 7th 2008 6:54AM
I wonder if the Brite will indeed feature some anti-piracy/homebrew technology. It would be a bit late, but it would help software sales for the remaining couple of years...
mel @ Sep 7th 2008 2:46PM
Re: the PSP-2000 and SD-TV question.
You said that the PSP-2000 will work with a standard def TV if it has component connections, not quite true. I have a slim and a sony trinitron TV, its non-HD but has component connections, and it still does not play games (everything else works).
It's not that to play the games you need a component connection, it that the signal has to progressive scan (which in turn requires a component cable). My TV (and probably most SDTV) only support an interlaced signal.
I think the 3000 will output games interlaced to get around this
Sharp Banana @ Sep 7th 2008 8:19PM
I think that possibly with the 3000 a firmware update will come along that enables interlaced output on the 2000 as well as there isn't anything technically different between the two except the screen
Angel Mass @ Sep 8th 2008 12:10AM
Wow the PSP Briteney Spears is just like the singer, all looks and nothing inside!
LOL actually, I hope they dont expand its inner memory or make it faster, that for me would worth more than the embed mic or brightest screen. As for now Im happy with my PSP Lite.
P.S: Now regarding the patent they show there... that is for the PSP-4000: Slim, Lite, Brite, Controllite
Klepto @ Sep 8th 2008 3:01PM
Q: Why did Sony make a handheld with so much potential and then lock it down to borderline useless?
A: They hate us.
JayD-1K @ Sep 8th 2008 6:17PM
i keep using the NEW readers section to post comments on.
any way, i was asking ir you could redesign your mobile site in a way that would allow us to post/read the comments section?
celica_guy81 @ Sep 11th 2008 1:17PM
Does anyone know about the new ps3 on controller keyboard working with psp? It does plug in the usb mini. Maybe with a cable? Is there any in game support or browser support for one now?
