Koei to unveil new PSP games at Tokyo Game Show
Koei president Kenji Matsubara spoke recently with Gamasutra about making third party titles in Japan. More important to our readers, part of that discussion involved PSP. Pointing to the PSP's success with Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (yes, everything comes back around to Monster Hunter PSP savior), Matsubara said it is encouraging to make games for the PSP as opposed to other tougher markets (the PS3 and 360).
In line with this, Koei has acted accordingly by revealing plans to announce new PSP titles at this year's Tokyo Game Show in October. What those titles are, it won't say, but we're certainly curious to find out. Deducing from the article, it sounds like Koei is aiming to make a game that utilizes Monster Hunter's team-focused gameplay. Hmm, perhaps a game where Guan Yu and friends go around Han Dynasty China looking to slay mythical creatures? We wouldn't be surprised ...
Anyway, don't get too excited yet. While Koei sings a PSP paean, it can't deny a lack of enthusiasm from Western markets. Perhaps, these new games will be Japan-only. Stay tuned, we'll have more from TGS next month.

I hope it's not Japan only.

Intriguing, but if they're going to make a party-based game they'd better make it a whole lot more fun than PSP and MH.

lol i clicked this article to say that cause i thought i would be the only one to suggest it.
i absolutely loved that game but it was WAY too short. i imported it actually cause i couldnt wait for them to release it in the US. a longer Gitaroo Man 2 would make my day.

I wouldn't mind a DW:GUNDAM sequel on the handhelds...

Lack of enthusiasm? I'm foaming at the mouth here! XD
Seriously, it's a catch 22. The lack of enthusiasm is because of the lack of consistent releases (or at least more releases of arguably good/great games, as it is in Japan). The lack of releases is because of the lack of enthusiasm. And seeing as to how we can't "show our enthusiasm" by going out and buying games a second time (although all you pirates reading this can shut up and drop some cash, yeah. You know who you are), I think Sony should take the initiative here.
Please :-(

let me guess... feudal japan? map based overworld? strategy/action? repetitive gameplay? poor graphics?
Jacksons @ Sep 9th 2008 3:14PM
Haha, lets hope not. I'm not a fan of "Warriors" games at all.

Lack of enthusiasm is a pathetic excuse. There are enough PSP systems sold here that, were there to be a real string of hits, the market would almost certainly come around. But you can't get the beancounters at various publishers to risk several million to help jumpstart the PSP. Sony has to help out by bringing more JP games and accessories.
Of course, apparently not gonna happen, so we get to play DS crap and import PSP games.
Oh, right, it's all piracy's fault... Blah blah, etc.

Did anyone else mis-read the name Matsubara as....er...something else?
Yes. I am a child.

hmm, considering koei may be purchasing tecmo...that could lead to more franchises beyond gundam and dynasty warriors....could you imagine ninja GAIDEN!? that would force capcom to bring out devil may cry sooner...i'd hope :P
maddevills @ Sep 9th 2008 10:11PM
man, wasn't koei considering to merge with tecmo? can you see the possibilities here? we may see beyond dynasty warriors and gundam...heck, we may see ninja gaiden or dead or alive on the psp...hopefully that'd coerce capcom to bring devil may cry out sooner....such wishful thinking....we shall see o_O
