Video goes through all of Home's features
Download to PSP
It's been a while since we've heard about PlayStation Home. This new video goes through all the things you can do in the online community. For example, you can play a game of chess with an online stranger. You can customize your character, your apartment. You can walk through Game Spaces for various titles, like Warhawk. For those of you not in the beta right now, this is a rare opportunity to see everything that's happening in Home right now.

I'm actually tired of hearing about Home, when does it actually release again? To me it just seems like a glorified XMB merged with Second Life. the game spaces seem like a pretty good idea though. Hopefully load times won't be ridiculously long (though someone who is in the beta can probably answer that).
benny boy @ Sep 15th 2008 2:23PM
Actually the load times are pretty short. As you have to download areas onto your PS3 Hard-drive the first time that you enter them.
It really is nothing like a glorified XMB. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised when you play it.
Devin @ Sep 15th 2008 2:54PM
Coming from someone who hasn't experienced it yet, I will take your opinion as just that. I personally can't wait until Home arrives. Showcasing my trophies will be awesome and customizing my own crib will be, too. Second Life may be a good example of what it looks like, but that doesn't mean that it's exactly what it is. IMO, it's just another way of interacting with others in a more visual manner vs. contextual/audible. I don't see myself spending a lot of time wandering around within Home though as I do have a life and cherish my free time and would rather do so playing games/watching movies rather than socializing with people I don't know. But just because I don't want to socialize, doesn't mean Home isn't a service that applies to me.
crazypenguin @ Sep 15th 2008 5:09PM
even if it is a glorified XMB, it has some things i really want to do. like i don't really have a load of friends who have a ps3 (actually just one) but i have a lot of online buddies that i know through other ways, it would be really nice if we could get together in home and be like, hey, lets play motorstorm?
ryan @ Sep 15th 2008 10:58PM
^
you could message "hey, let's play motorstorm" just as easily. minus all the extra graphical trimmings of home.
MakaiOokami @ Sep 16th 2008 8:44AM
Ryan your argument fails. It's quite a bit different from that. You have to first send a message to multiple people asking if they want to play a game, then you have to read replies from each person, then you have to set up the game and try to get everyone in.
For Home, you can just talk to them, then you select Motorstorm, select the options you want for the online match, then all they have to do is hit X close to your character 2 times, and the person is in the game. They can join you a bit late as well. They don't even have to know your game name. Or you can just go up to people and start chatting, and discover you are both in a Beta or something, and you can jump directly into a game.
Also if you were going to play something like Warhawk or Socom you could get a clan together and detail a plan before the game starts so that everyone could know what the basic plan is. Maybe you have everyone divided into teams, compliment skills so people can cover each other's weaknesses, etc...
I mean why is it so hard for you to understand the benefits of this Ryan? Why is it so hard for you to use your imagination on how different things can become? Or maybe you just dont' have any friends. Well that's fine you can make friends pretty easily in Home when you can just walk up to a group and start talking.
This has all been announced, verified and verified directly by Sony. The stuff I'm describing is common sense and old news. I hope you're not honestly that far behind the news on this subject.
Jerses @ Sep 15th 2008 1:52PM
nice nice...this looks like finally they are going to release this thing. What happened to the home beta invitations every week? or was it every week of a month...
Waqman @ Sep 15th 2008 1:54PM
Did they just show the Resistance 2 game space? It looks so empty and boring. WTH? Warhawk's looks the best from what I've seen.
Anyways this HOME thing still looks boring, the only thing I'm interested in is jumping into online games with people.
Jerses @ Sep 15th 2008 2:08PM
Im not in home beta but maybe does are like...portals to the real lobby. because this is just a picture in the wall and the resistance 1 looby was full of (useless) things.
im more worried about the in-games.. what if the chairs of chess or arcades are full? what if a jerk just leave his avatar in the arcade for hours? anyone in home beta clear this questions for me?
Averna @ Sep 15th 2008 9:34PM
That was a Resistance 2 'event', like a presentation. The two dudes were developers, or something. I think it was meant to be a presentation or something.
Roto13 @ Sep 15th 2008 1:55PM
And people cry when I say it looks like Second Life.
jaredgood1 @ Sep 15th 2008 2:47PM
Less flying peni.
Alex @ Sep 15th 2008 1:56PM
Unfortunately it looks incredibly useless to me.
Squirtforce @ Sep 15th 2008 2:02PM
Home? What the hell is home? Ignoring it, hoping the pain will go away.
Metal_Gear @ Sep 15th 2008 2:02PM
I for one am really looking forward to this, it is something no other console has doneto this extreme detail
*awaits someone to say the Dreamcast did it*
And for all the whiners, this is entirely and 100% optional. I have also heard there is a 2D Home too, that allows you to chat with a group of friends and launch into games... probably a rumor though.

The "Download to PSP" links aren't working in S3&FF3/OSX.
Andrew Yoon @ Sep 15th 2008 2:07PM
Do you have the PLAYSTATION Network Downloader installed?
http://store.playstation.com/game/instructions.vm
required @ Sep 15th 2008 3:20PM
Since that requires running a copy of Microsoft's Operating System I am not. I did find that if I open the .xpd file in a text editor that I can copy the .mp4 files url and then proceed to download it though.
francisco @ Sep 15th 2008 2:08PM
sweet now when does the real version actually come out? >.>
EmptyEnergy @ Sep 15th 2008 2:18PM
I'm really looking forward to this. Hopefully Home actually comes out before the 360 version of the Mii's Wii err the Wii's Mii.
Dave @ Sep 15th 2008 3:51PM
Accually hope it comes out a bit after the xbox's generic looking avatars so when people are used to them and then see how home is then they will see that the playstation network is truely better.
Mattchewie @ Sep 15th 2008 2:24PM
I'm pretty geeked about HOME. That is if its done right. I think people that are into social gaming will enjoy home but people who aren't most likely will stay away.
I forone hope though that sony gets on the ball and gets some direct chat ability into the PS3 for the "homeless". I know as of now I really dislike not being able to chat with my friend as we find a warhawk server to join or even if hes in Mercs, I'm loading it up...I can't talk to him until I'm actually into his game....it gets lame after a while.
1664 @ Sep 15th 2008 2:38PM
aye looks like second life, however the game rooms look like they could have potential depending on what you can do in them, as for standing around danceing and inviteing people to your space lmao what a joke and useless feature
ryan @ Sep 15th 2008 2:50PM
i admire the effort it took to put Home together, it's cool that every game has it's own decorated room. but i don't think it's necessary (for me) to be honest.
decorating, getting dressed and hanging with my friends, i do that already. when i'm online, i just want to game with my friends. not watch my avatar dance or wait to use an arcade machine. so it's a good thing that it's optional. i'm sure sims fans will dig it.
Doug @ Sep 15th 2008 4:15PM
Agreed. Second Life and IMVU didn't interest me in the slightest (I'd much rather hang out in person), and Home doesn't sound like it is going to be much more than that. I think that Home is the most over-hyped aspect of the PS3 to date.
Bishop99999999 @ Sep 15th 2008 2:53PM
Meh. Looks pretty useless. And also creepy when you think about it. Who would spend their time sitting at home, making up a fake version of themselves that goes dancing and hangs out with friends on their PS3? You could, I dunno, go outside instead...
justin @ Sep 21st 2008 1:01PM
lol y would some body make a avatar on their xbox and just look at him,,cause thats all you can do..
Azrael @ Sep 15th 2008 2:59PM
I'm in the Home Beta (v0.98), American Server. Please allow me to answer a few of questions.
For one, there are no game spaces as of yet (either that or consider me ignorant). Also, there were a few things in the video that aren't in the beta; for example: That giant sphere with the triangles, nope. The billiards table with all the weird shapes on it, nope.
As far as events goes, those are seasonal. Meaning, you can't access them all year around. The resistance 2 and the ratchet and clank area that you saw, those were not game spaces, but more like booths from e3 or some convention.
And finally, the beta is nice, but not so many options as far as customization goes (i think they misspelled customization in the video...). The options they currently have are limited, as in only a few types of clothing, and house renovations. I did meet quite a few people tho (as none of my friends were accepted).
P.s. its a sausage fest.
jerrrrrry @ Sep 15th 2008 3:26PM
"P.s. its a sausage fest."
Maybe there are some girls around but they play as male characters. Because you've got to feel sorry for a girl playing an online game.. (from tony hawk 4 to any of the Socom games) Guys constantly hitting on them
If I were a girl I would hide my identity and identitties
SaMav @ Sep 15th 2008 5:22PM
If i'm not mistaken. That is how customization is spelled in Europe. They have a weird thing where they use "s's" instead of z's.
bkalasin @ Sep 15th 2008 3:04PM
So it's basically just navigating SIMS characters around some immense commercial/mall? Doesn't anyone go outside anymore? I think I'll pass. Home = Yawn...
Woz @ Sep 15th 2008 3:02PM
I don't care anymore.
Metal_Gear @ Sep 15th 2008 3:12PM
All of you showing your ignorance here, this is why Sony are the billion £ company and your all readying a gameing blog. Girl Gamers (not that I am saying all girl gamers but some aswell as dudes) will take to this rather well, on my time in The Matrix Online, a lot of the girls who played rather enjoyed how they could have parties online in those clubs and spent time farming the parts to code (craft) clothing and they were very fun parties as I went to alot too.
With Home, it allows the community to meet each other much easier, you can meet people who play at similar times as you and before you know it we have New Year and other holiday parties. Fair enough if you dont think you'll use it, but to call it useless as if thats fact just shows your ignorance.
Also, Bishop9999999999999, ever heard of the internet? Sign up to a forum or a blog and you have thousands if not millions of people who might not be who they say they are. It isn't like you are going to get invited to someones 'Home' then get digitally raped is it? o_O
ryan @ Sep 15th 2008 3:28PM
i think he meant it's slightly creepy that you do things you normally do, but in a virtual world.
it's obviously geared towards gamers that want to build an online community. for those that already have a community outside, friends, family and coworkers, it's "useless" because they already have achieved that.
anything else is time wasted and time taken away from their online game sessions, to them that is.
Colton @ Sep 15th 2008 3:19PM
Lawlz. They spelled customization wrong in the video!
Eneref @ Sep 15th 2008 3:34PM
No they didn't, you ignorant American. Not everyone uses Zs when an S will suffice.
Archon @ Sep 15th 2008 3:30PM
No they didn't. Home is developed by the SCEE so they use British English. And they spell it 'customisation'.
Popfrogs @ Sep 15th 2008 5:02PM
If the z made the same sound as an s, I'd agree with our snarky British friend. However...they don't.
Eneref @ Sep 16th 2008 8:24AM
Z's don't make the same sound as an S?
I guess you're right. You must be very wize.
Jeff @ Sep 15th 2008 4:32PM

Martin Greenberg @ Sep 15th 2008 4:18PM
I have the Home beta. For some reason, I got in a few weeks after downloading the theme. There's a "mall" with like 12 pieces of furniture, a second house you can get for free...I'm not seeing these "game spaces"...there's this purple building called "game space" that has shit arcade games, pool, and bowling. The theatre is ONE ROOM that just has seats and a screen that shows a different Sony ad every day. That's it. Unless I'm forgetting something, Home has NOTHING else beyond what I just said. It's as exciting as it sounds.
Popfrogs @ Sep 15th 2008 5:05PM
I would imagine such a limited beta of a social service would be boring. Without people, there's no action.
Martin Greenberg @ Sep 15th 2008 7:35PM
It's not even just that (although that is a major factor right now). It's that there isn't even anything to do. At all!
Chirs Hansen @ Sep 15th 2008 4:21PM
Hi, this is Chris Hansen, NBC news. That was to Jeff's comment on to catch a predator. :)
ChocoDK @ Sep 15th 2008 4:24PM
Nice to see some more information on Home since I didn't get an invite along with many others. I would hope it comes out soon just to see how it is. Otherwise I don't think I will use it much but its a nice effort from Sony. I love the fact though that your trophies will be displayed in your apartment. That is really a great idea and hopefully in 2009 trophies will be mandatory in all PS3 releases.
maxpontiac @ Sep 15th 2008 4:49PM
Thanks for posting that. I have never seen some of that footage before.
Enough of the delay already though!!
