What is this Sonic Unleashed trailer missing? 2D
Download to PSP
Remember when people were cautiously optimistic about Sonic Unleashed? Finally, we thought: a return to Sonic's 2D roots. None of this crazy mascot 3D nonsense! Well, looks like Sonic Team is up to their old (not not so old) ways: this new trailer for Sonic Unleashed includes tons of 3D platforming sections, brawling areas (with combo meter) and almost zero 2D gameplay. Are you still excited for this?

Now I think it's safe to say it would be cautious of me to be pessimistic.
pat1202003 @ Sep 15th 2008 12:49PM
Heck yea I'm excited!!! I got a good feeling about this Sonic game. I think SEGA has learned from their past... as least I hope they did...
KRIS_C_123 @ Sep 15th 2008 12:49PM
im actually liking the looks of this (graphically) but it will probably be horrible to play
DarklighterPS3 @ Sep 15th 2008 3:15PM
More excited about the game now. I would not have bought a 2D game on PS3 but if they do a good 3D Sonic I would pick it up.
Theo @ Sep 15th 2008 12:55PM
Hellz yeah im still siked!
The guy who did sonic adventure is back... so even with a mixture of a little bit of 2D this will be like sonic adventure on crack...! imagine that, sonics crackventure!
Gaucho @ Sep 15th 2008 12:56PM
Though running on water is always cool (Only Sonic, Jesus and Tiger Woods have pulled this off) I don't know if this game will be as good as it can be. Sonic is supposed to be about speed not slowing down/stop moving to fight some bad guys (example:Sonic sucks in smash Bros.)
jarhead906 @ Sep 15th 2008 1:04PM
My Japanese friend would wipe you across the floor with Sonic. It's just a matter of getting good with a character you like and exploiting the moves to win. I think Melee is better than Brawl anyway...
Gaucho @ Sep 15th 2008 1:11PM
i agree that it takes time to get used to a character and you can get really used to it. but what i meant was that Sonic isn't meant to fist fight, he just runs much in the same way that The Flash doesn't really fist fight he uses his speed to make a tornado or something. By the way I would humiliate your "Japanese friend" good sir, I'm a tenth degree black belt in the art of smash brothers. (btw I agree that melee was better than brawl).
Dan @ Sep 15th 2008 12:57PM
To answer the question in a word "No" I'm now no longer interested.
Daniel @ Sep 15th 2008 12:59PM
To put the words "Sonic" and "3D" in the same sentence should be a big grammatical error...
Levi @ Sep 16th 2008 6:22PM
Agreed. Sonic and Knuckles (2D) ftw..
hplcman @ Sep 15th 2008 12:59PM
No. Not excited at all.
mikael @ Sep 15th 2008 1:00PM
Is a separate game or just a skin on top of Ratchet & Clank?

Grindboots FTW!!
Sonic Team should stop to rape their PGs with this crappy stuff..
shalter24 @ Sep 15th 2008 1:07PM
Any hope I had for this game was just demolished by this trailer. It looks like more of the same.
SEGA, please. If you ever want Sonic to be successful again, make another game that is like Sonic 1,2, or 3 for the Genesis with next-gen graphics. 2D ONLY. (Except bonus stages)
MakaiOokami @ Sep 15th 2008 1:11PM
It's called portable gaming machines. you know PSP and DS.

I saw soo many things in that trailer that looked exactly like Ratchet and Clank, it's unbelievable.

Dear Sega,
Let me introduce to Mega Man 9 and his father, Capcom.
Yours Sincerely,
Genesis Sonic fan.
PS.
Werehog? Please fire whoever thought that up then put out the flames and bury him alive.

"To put the words "Sonic" and "3D" in the same sentence should be a big grammatical error..."
You just did that on your own.
jojo29 @ Sep 15th 2008 1:17PM
Sonic Adventure was the last "good" Sonic game, aside from the days his of his 16bit glory. No, i am not excited for this "Sonic" game at all.
You see, Sega has messed up sonic on so many levels, i doubt we will ever get that great Sonic game we all crave for. Let's start of with a list of things:
First, the whole "rock n roll, ska, metal" Sonic theme has GOT TO GO. The reasons the original Sonic games were awesome were NOT because of rock n metal type music. They can't even get the music right in the Sonic games, Sonic Adventure was the start of that ugly trend. Bring back the sweet tracks of Green Hill Zone.
Second, i know Sonic has been shown with "people" before, but when they actually show Sonic with people, it makes it look too cartoony. The only "human" that should ever be shown is Robotnik. I don't like the whole we are saving humans theme. Keep it fantastical, like Rayman, or like Ratchet and Clank.ooh, man if they were ever given the Sonic License, i believe they could make the ultimate Sonic Platformer, built around speed of course.
3. Keep it 2D with 3D segments mixed in, not the other way around. Sonic Adventure had the 3D segments down to where they were fun, now throw in lots more 2D segments and you have a sure hit, provided the music is there as well, not of that stupid Rock n Metal crap.
4. Quit trying to make an "all genres in one" game. Look at number 3 for what type of game Sonic should be, a 2d/3d platforming on speed game.
Anywhoo those are my main gripes about the current state of Sonic games. 1. Lame rock n metal crap music. 2. Kick the humans from the story. 3. 2D w/3D thrown in and that s it. 4. Keep it one genre, maybe two at the most.
And no, Sonic in SSBB does not suck. He is awesome!
Emophia @ Sep 15th 2008 1:49PM
Sonic Adventure 2 was good too.
Especially the racing multiplayer.
Mr. Joe @ Sep 15th 2008 1:16PM
i never was excited. and i never will be. sonic is dead to me.
Vincent @ Sep 15th 2008 1:28PM
I don't see the bad thing about this video. Most trailers so far have shown a good chunk of 2D action. Then for 1:35 they show 3D and people automatically go "omg it sucks"? Sonic Adventure was pretty good you know..
Also the Werehog feature reminds me of Crash Bandicoot and Jak. So it doesn't seem bad at all. I'll wait for the reviews before labeling it with the "Absolute Suck" seal.
Gambit07 @ Sep 15th 2008 1:26PM
Sonic Team does NOT listen to critics & fans, only sales.
MRB1G @ Sep 15th 2008 1:29PM
Hmmmmmmmmmmm not sure.
I liked it more when I just heard it was straight forward sonic similar to the rush games on the ds, but now, well i am not so sure, dont get me wrong i am still excited, just a bit meh with the werehog sections although I guess they could still be good if done probably - but still sonic isnt an rpg-
:-S confused
Miles @ Sep 15th 2008 1:38PM
Never was interested. They said the same thing for Sonic Heroes, as well as Sonic 2006.
Now, if only the guys behind this crap could understand that we would like to PLAY the game, and not suffer from it, that would be great. I'm not interested in watching Sonic running in a straight line with no input on my part at all. I'm not interested in defeating some freaking enemies with a life bar.
Sonic isn't all about speed. Sonic did not even move so fast in the Genesis games, except in a few rare places (some tubes in Chemical Plants, or in Hydrocity Zone). And what the heck are they thinking of, with those life bars ?
Let's not even talk about the "werehog" stuff.
Terrence @ Sep 15th 2008 3:01PM
The thing is, it looks like it could have potential. I don't think any 3D Sonic game will be as good as Sonic Adventure, but I think as long as the Werehog sequences aren't more than.... 2% if the game, it'll be worth at least a rental. As someone said earlier, it just needs to stop trying to be many different genres and focus on Sonic-ish gameplay. And fix the camera.
But since I no longer have faith in Sonic Team, I doubt this game'll be any good, especially after seeing the Werehog gameplay in this trailer. Meh, I'll just play Super Mario Galaxy if I want an old school mascot with good new school gameplay. There'll never be an equivalent "Sonic Galaxy" (and even if there were, it'd probably just be Shadow driving a motorcycle around some planets in space, or some crap).
Styar\ @ Sep 15th 2008 2:08PM
Yeaaaa.......
sorry sega u screwed up already
sonic is best in 2d.
now that i see this game is a lot more of that 3d crap, i'm no longer interested
not gonna buy it, not even gonna try it. looks more or less the same
now as sum1 posted earlier.
2d with next gen graphics and maybe 3d for bonus stages.
take a clue from capcom with bionic commando
or even mega man 9
ill continue to wait for the REAL 2d remake.
this will most likely fail, just like the other crappy sonic games
Aozora @ Sep 15th 2008 2:58PM
eww...please no!!
i'm glad there's no 2D!!!
Levi @ Sep 16th 2008 6:25PM
yooouuuu must be young..
Rated-G @ Sep 15th 2008 3:17PM
Why are people comparing this to Ratchet & Clank? Because of rail grinding? People that's been around since Sonic Adventure 2, and maybe earlier with the Sonic Advanced series... There were whole levels in SA2 based around grinding!
Vincent @ Sep 15th 2008 3:35PM
Now that you mention it, that's true :3
Anyways, I'm still excited for this game. The hands-on preview by gamespy was very positive about this title!
tristan88 @ Sep 15th 2008 3:39PM
the sonic adventure games on dreamcast were good and they were 3d. why cant they just go back to that.
Coriff @ Sep 15th 2008 4:18PM
Man, you guys need to stop sippin on the Hatorade. It's Sonic.. by himself.. and it looks pretty damn cool. Yes, it's not 2d, but I'm pretty sure that's what a 2d level would look like if it was transferred to 3d. As for Werehog, yea, it may not have been the best idea, but it looks God of Warish fighting style, which is at least a good system to ripoff. IF you want a 2d game so bad, bust out your Genesis or go make/play a crappy homebrew one like so many other people have.
justsomeKAI @ Sep 15th 2008 4:13PM
Is sonic running to see King Kai?
If not i'm disappointed they're using snake road.
dmd @ Sep 15th 2008 7:31PM
People tend to forget the there were two amazing Sonic 3d games back in the good old dreamcast days. I dont think that going 3d is necessarily the confirmation that it will be such an epic failure.
I'm still optimistic about it.
Syer @ Sep 15th 2008 4:37PM
Is it only me or does this look like hyped up "Bowser stage" from Mario 64?
skywalker6705 @ Sep 15th 2008 6:13PM
Whether or not the retro purists like it, Sonic Adventure was received pretty damn well, and sold good to boot, so I can see them following in it's footsteps with the camera motions. However, I think you guys are a bit off in how you're choosing to look at it. Where in that trailer (during the Sonic segment) do you see him given any real options but "forward". Aside from a handful of enemies or so, it seems to be going forward and going fast, which is certainly in line with what Sonic is about.
The Werehog however, looks like a whole other issue. At least this latest trailer shows him moving much quicker than he did in earlier versions.
I just think that entirely disregarding all 3D Sonic action pays a huge disservice to the Adventure series.
zombienutz @ Sep 15th 2008 6:38PM
That looks craptastic.
Abscissa @ Sep 15th 2008 8:05PM
I'm every bit as annoyed about Sonic still being on what appears to be Earth instead of Mobeus as I am about him still being generic 3D instead of good ol 2D.
Ty @ Sep 16th 2008 11:11AM
The reason why the latter 3D Sonic Games sucked (Sonic Adventure was pretty good) was because the camera behind Sonic was not bound to the direction he was running. It follows its own rail or it is glued to the general direction you need to go. This made controlling Sonic in a 3D environment very difficult.
All the Sonic Team only needs to mount the camera on Sonic's back in slightly down angled view. The player would then be able to skew the camera with the right analog stick on PS3 PS2 or XBox360. Letting go would cause the camera to return to its original position. Over the shoulder.
Sadly this is not what they have done again. I am sad to say that even if they did do this, alot of you would still be biased towards the Sonic Team. That camera issue has been their only major mistake in game design so far (besides Shadow the Hedgehog and the horrible town gameplay of Sonic 2006). In Sonic Adventure people didn't mind the fact that the camera mounted on the rails of say the current track atleast gave a near complete sense of control. But this was extrapolated to some of the oddest camera angles for some of the hardest controlling mechanisms in the latter games (Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 2006, Sonic and the Secret Rings) And now sadly, this game. (Without the boards, Sonic Riders would be a better game).
To Andrew Yoon: I have to say that instilling this idea of 2D being the only thing that works for Sonic is pretty stereotypical and ignorant of us in the gaming community. We should be able to analyze what has made Sonic in a 3D world so "unbearable" for so many people. We all know Sonic SHOULD work in 3D. Sonic Team just needs to get it right. I'm guessing by what I've seen this will be somewhat closer to Sonic Adventure and Sonic Rush Hybrid... with Sonic Wolf Free Roaming Platformer Action Gameplay (aka Chao Gameplay). Alot of developers in North America recieve feedback from this large gaming community. But what about Japan? I need to get this over there to Sonic Team. I value your opinions. (I just wish I could do more)
